2006 BBS Mock Draft
1. Having the #1 Pick in back to back drafts is something a team can only dream about, but, the new Jersey Nets are in that situation. Having drafted the amazing Chris Paul, the Nets have still been an absolutely awful team, despite Paul putting up an impressive 22 points and 9.6 assists per game. This probably has something to do with the fact that the next best player on the team is Bobby Hurley, also a PG, followed closely by Michael Dickerson….the Nets have only two players averaging double digit points. Anyway, with the First Pick, I would expect the Nets to go with any position except PG, with Noah, Roy, Rondo, Gay, and Aldridge all seemingly nice top tier players, the pick is a tough one, as outside Rondo, the Nets could use everybody. I think though that the Nets go with the sick Number two man, and the same guy they made the #1 pick in UOSLR in the 2006 draft…Brandon Roy. His overall game makes it so that with even a little work, he could become an absolutely sick player, with stud scoring, and nice handles and Defense. On the other hand Gay also could become a sick player, but he still looks a bit Raw, and there is a bit more risk. Maybe it would be best if the Cavs trade down a few spots, pick something nice up, and look at whats available at the #4 or #5 pick. Still not predicting that here, so the Pick is Brandon Roy.
2. At Number 2 the Houston Rockets would be on the clock, needing anything outside PG, again, as they ended up with the #2 pick last year, when the Philly pick jumped from 12 to #2 overall, and landed Deron Williams, who while being a sick scorer, averaging 22.9 points 7.7 assists a game, hasn’t been enough to lead them to a bunch of wins. The Rockets also had a second top 5 pick, last year, their own at #4, which they used to select Danny Granger, who had a mediocre TC. However, with this pick, I don’t think Rondo goes, as Pig said himself he doesn’t feel like he would like Rondo and Deron in the same backcourt, instead, I see Houston looking at taking a front court player, or maybe they try a Rudy Gay, and see if he can’t play SG. On the other hand, Joakim Noah looks like a stud, even if his POT is low, he should be a supreme defensive player, and will be a key piece to build around for somebody. With a probable second top 5 pick, actually, with what right now would be the third pick as well as the second, Pig has some room to play with, and in this case I see him taking Noah at #2, then maybe shopping the third pick for a SG, If he doesn’t like what he sees there though, I would see him taking Lamarcus Aldridge at #3, giving him an excellent Front court for the future…a Potential Deron/?/Granger/Aldridge/Noah team? Wow…Gettiing back to back years with two top 5 picks would make this team killer. The Nets taking Gay would be an absolutely perfect Scenario, as Roy and Noah could come to Houston and set the Rockets up perfectly with a defensive stud at Center, a sick PG, a Stud scoring SG, and if Granger develops into even a nice defender, someone like a Rasheed Wallace with less blocks, they would have an amazing Role player 3rd option.
3. Aldridge in this case, Gay would duplicate Granger, so a trade would be possible, but, Aldridge looks really nice, and could be sick next to the defensive stud that Noah appears poised to become. With Noah making up for Aldridge’s less than ideal rebounding, and Aldridge making up the offense Noah may never develop
4. 4th on the clock is the Golden State Warriors, who are left with a difficult decision, Rudy Gay or Rajon Rondo. They already have Delonte West, who looks like a really nice PG, but Rondo could be too tempting to pass up, not matter how you look at it, the Warriors are going to come out a winner, with Gay looking like a franchise SF, and Rondo looking like a franchise PG. Honestly, I have no idea how to call this one, this draft is so unpredictable, but I would have to say, with West looking like a low TO PG, that CC will go with Gay, as his scoring, combined with Amare’s scoring, plus the fact that Gay looks like he will be a strong defender makes me think that CC goes Gay, which is disappointing, as it removes the possibility that was Play taking Gay…
5. 5th on the clock is Chicago, who is left with a tough decision, as he traded Kirk Hinrich for Andrew Bogut, as he still had Jameer Nelson, but at this point, regardless of what Play says, I think that Bargnani is a big enough drop off from Rondo, that Play has to either shop the pick, or select Rondo. Rondo looks like a sick player, and he should get a ton of steals and be an excellent rebounded at the position. His scoring could be questionable, as a PG with a poor outside game can be tough to deal with. However, with work, Rondo should become a sick PG, with amazing Defense. There could be questions about his turnovers as well, but I would guess that he will be fine in the long run.
6. 6th on the clock goes to the Philadelphia 76ers, Spence will probably have to take Andrea Bargnani. Bargnani has worries, specifically that he is a shitty defense and rebounding big man, but, there is some belief that he could slide over to SF, where he could develop into a sick scorer. I could also see Spence looking at a Tyrus Thomas, as a boom bust pick, but in reality, I would guess that Spence makes the safer choice and takes Bargnani, but he does know things about the draft, so he could go really anywhere with it.
7. The 7th overall pick goes to the Portland Trailblazers as of this moment, which own the Memphis Grizzlies pick. While this pick has been placed on the block, and called a top 5 pick, this last sim was a very nice one for the Grizz, where they went 3-0, so I doubt this pick remains in this position come lotto time. However, I am doing this mock draft as of right now, so, this is the slot that Portland gets to draft, and as of this moment, it’s a very tough spot to pick. Until notes come out, there are numerous players that look like they could be lotto picks, probably moreso of a bunch than the top 5 really, where each player could be found deserving of the number one pick if a team so wanted. Shannon Brown, Ronnie Brewer, Paul Millsap, Sergio Rodriguez, Adam Morrison, Randy Foye, and Tyrus Thomas all could be considered at the 7th pick, but I would count on it really coming down to four players, Tyrus Thomas, Paul Millsap, Ronnie Brewer, and Shannon Brown. Brown looks to have more of an upside than Brewer, which may be what DB wants considering this is a bonus pick, but, Brewer is more polished right now, and very well could be an excellent 4th or 5th starter, however, with the Blazers needing a PF more than anything, I think that they will take Thomas, and gamble on him having upside, over Millsap, considering all other things are pretty much even, who is short, and may not have the upside that Thomas has. Millsap I would bet will be better at rebounding, but, at pick number 7, it would probably be better to take the gamble on a player who could become a stud, and should be a nice shot blocker. Millsap would be a bit of a reach at this point too, and probably would not hold the value that the 7th pick should if one were to draft him, so if the blazers were looking to trade it, Tyrus is the way to go.
8. The 8th pick belongs to the Dallas Mavericks, who I hate, since they dealt for parker, and messed up what I had written here. Even though they traded for Parker, my opinion of their pick doesn’t change in this case. While Millsap is nice, I think that the Mavericks would go with the better looking
