1) Who will be the most coveted free agent in the offseason?
Martinez: To me it's Bob McAdoo simply based off his age, ratings, and his production. At just 25 years of age, McAdoo can still potentially develop even further. He's not a big time defender so that may put people off slightly but anyone has to be a fool not to like everything else about McAdoo's game. to be honest it's a slight tie between him and Dickey and both guys will get a multitude of MAX offers come free agency.
Aar: Has to be Derrek Dickey. He's got one less season under his belt than the other free agents and was just on the All-League 1st Team. McAdoo is solid, but I prefer bigs who can defend. Dickey is essentially already an elite player in the league and I'd argue that he's by far the best available free agent.
2) Who has a worse contract: Darnell Hillman or Goo Kennedy?
Martinez: To me it's Darnell Hillman, Goo Kennedy I think has slightly better production and value than Hillman. Hillman doesn't seem to excel at any one thing. He's pretty average at everything and certainly not worth that huge contract at all.
Aar: Marty, you need to do your homework pal. To say that Hillman doesn't excel at any one thing when he had the second-highest blocks per game average in the league is absurd. Hillman is a specialist, whereas Goo is a really undersized big man.
Let's compare per-36 numbers:
Hillman: 14.5 ppg, 10.7 rpg, 1.0 spg, 4.8 bpg, 1.66 topg
Goo: 17.1 ppg, 11.7 rpg, 1.4 spg, 0.47 bpg, 1.25 topg
Is there even an argument to be had here?
3) Who would you rather have for the next three seasons: Kermit Washington or Bob Lanier?
Martinez: Right now I'd rather much have Lanier for the next three seasons... if you were to ask who I'd rather have for the next 5 it'd be Kermit. Bob Lanier is a stud already. Top 10 in rebounds, shoots a solid percentage, and gets big time blocks. Kermit may eventually develop to be as good as Lanier but I'm taking Lanier all day long right now especially for the next three seasons.
Aar: I'll play devil's advocate and argue Kermit. Sure, Lanier is in his prime, but Kermit is less of a liability on offense with the lower turnovers. He'll also give you more as a lower option and you don't need to center your offense around him. Also, who knows where Kermit's ratings go in the next few seasons. I expect they have nowhere to go but up.
4) Who has more value: Julius Erving or M.L. Carr?
Martinez: I'm giving the slight edge to Erving with his explosion defensively as of late. I do like Carr but I'd take Erving all day long over Carr for sure. Ervings percentagees from both the field and 3pt are lights out as well.
Aar: I definitely think it's Carr. Carr is more versatile and the only reason his turnovers appear high are because he was the primary PG backup. Carr is the best player on his team and he's coming off of the bench. If I had Erving, I would trade him for Carr straight up without hesitation.
5) The Top-50 Most Valuable Players Article has been completed. What do you have the biggest problem with?
Martinez: I don't have any problems with it... everyone has different perceptions of value. While one guy might value someone, I may not. Aar's article is an opinion article more than a factual article.
Aar: My biggest problem is how much people freaked out. Although, in hindsight, I'd take Hillman off the list and put Van Lier lower. Then again, that was my perception at the time that I wrote the article.
6) There was a lot of debate about Norm Van Lier. Where do you rank him in terms of point guards in the league value-wise?
Martinez: I think NVL is overrated. I personally never liked him. Do I think he's a top 10 PG? Sure. Do I think top 5? Not even close. Do you want me to make a list? Just off the top of my head Snyder, McGlockin, Clark, Frazier, Webb, Weiss that's in no particular order, and I know I'm missing more PGs.
Aar: I think that NVL is top-5 for sure. I'll take him over Snyder, McGlocklin, Webb and Weiss for sure. The only guys who I think you can make a case for are Clark, Frazier and Bing, who you didn't mention. I'm a huge NVL fan and that won't change.
7) Of the three GMs that are switching teams, who do you think is starting with the best situation?
Martinez: HF easily. He's getting a 29 year old Kareem and a 28 year old Austin Carr to build around. Those are two superstars in their primes and two superstars that in my opinion are top 5 in their positions. Unlike CC with Cleveland, he didn't leave Washington in a bad situation and set them up relatively well for the future.
Aar: Another chance for me to play devil's advocate. I think that Phelps gets the best situation with the Wiz. He has all of his picks, Marvin Barnes and if he can get expiring and something for CJ, he's in business. I'm also shocked that Johnny Davis fell so far in the draft. He basically gets a clean slate and can build the team however he wants.
8) Did the Nuggets have a chance of beating a healthy Magic team?
Martinez: Even before the conclusion of the finals, yes I thought so. Repole isn't a very good DC tactician but I forgot that greeme was an even worse DC tactician and he completely blew that series. It was greeme's to lose and lose he did. Absolutely atrocious performance in my opinion.
Aar: I didn't think they had a shot. The Magic are just so dominant and I'm surprised that they were even able to get a lead in the series. I expect that a healthy Magic team will have a dynasty.
9) Who do you think are the top-3 players in this year's draft?
Martinez: The three top players were the three drafted first, Adrian Dantley, Tree Rollins and MRR. I was lucky enough to get Dantley at the number 3 position. Dantley was considered by many to be the #1 player in this draft. Personally, I had my sights set on MRR and my top 3 if I were drafting would be MRR/Dantley/Tree.
I think Tree will be good, but unlike Broph I don't think he's #1 material.
Aar: I agree, but I don't agree with the order. I would have selected Dantley second over Tree. I know that Broph is a wizard at reading draft notes, so I'll give him the benefit of the doubt. I also think that Dennis Johnson could have been considered for the top-3. He looks really intriguing and I'm shocked that he fell to 7th.
10) Which player from last year's draft do you think will have the best career?
Martinez: Dan Roundfield, simply based off his notes and his solid production in his rookie year. That and he's also on my team but in all seriousness Roundfield averaging 20 and 10 with 2 blocks per game is very realistic and would defnitely make for a great future career.
Aar: Much to your delight, I'm going with the other member of your team and taking World B. Free. I think that he'll be an absolutely elite scorer. Last year's draft is overall, pretty awful. I think that the only potential All-Stars are Free, Williams and Sobers (depending on his development)
