2012 Draft Notes
This draft is uncertain. There is no clear cut #1 pick. Instead there are a handful of players that will make you happy at 1 and also make the top half of the lotto extremely valuable. So in no particular order here are the top players in this years BBS Draft. Kyrie Irving is the best PG prospect in this draft. He is an amazing passer. Offensively he is pretty raw, but he has shown glimpses of being a very good scorer as well. Michael Gilchrist is a super all around prospect. He has the size to play SG or SF and he can do a little bit of everything. He can shoot inside or out, rebound and has the upside to even be a good defender one day. Derrick Williams is a strong, athletic PF that can run the floor and score with his back to the basket. Williams is also a solid rebounder and defender. Enes Kanter is a legit C with very good rebounding ability. Kanter is raw around the basket and is a limited shot blocker but he still shows great potential. There was a look at the top of the draft and here is a look at the rest of it…
Centers…
Joshua Smith is a nice low post scorer. He actually needs to work on his strength, despite his huge frame. Most of his low post scoring is from his quick feet and great feel around the basket. Smith is a pretty sub par rebounder and he doesn’t block shots. He is a pretty good man to man post defender though…
Zeke Marshall is a nice shot blocker that likes to pass out of the post. Marshall is also a decent man to man defender as well. Offensively Marshall is a lost cause.
Kenny Frease is a solid post scorer who is extremely strong. Frease isn’t much for finesse; he’s all about brute strength. Frease is also a decent rebounder. Defensively he isn’t so great.
Henry Sims is a nice shot blocker defender type. Not a especially good offense player or rebounder. Sims is a probable late 1st Round selection.
Aaric Murray is a nice multi talented big man. He can score inside and out. He can also block some shots. He is a decent rebounder as well.
Power Forwards…
Dallas Lauderdale is a pretty raw player. He isn’t especially adept at anything, but he’s decent at everything. Lauderdale is a strong young man that can board a little and defend a little. He’s a risky pick anywhere before 15.
Wally Judge is a very good post scorer. He can score with his back to the basket, and he can face up and drive to the hole. His jump shot is a huge liability though. Judge doesn’t really offer much besides his offense.
Rick Jackson is a good offensive player and rebounder. Defense isn’t a strong suit though and that will knock him down most draft boards. Most scouts also believe his upside is limited. Jackson is a risky pick before 20.
Gus Gilchrist is a solid rebounder with shooting range beyond normal power forwards. Defensively he is much better man to man then as a help defender. No threat to block a shot, Gilchrist still should be a solid mid to late 1st Round selection.
Alex Oriachi is an extremely good rebounder and solid post defender. Based on these 2 things alone Oriachi might get taken in the top 15. Don’t be surprised by how bad Oriachi is offensively though.
Miles Plumlee is a decent shot blocker that should turn into a backup big man in BBS. Plumlee really needs to gain strength and work on his offense to be more then a role player.
Small Forwards…
Chris Singleton is pretty close to the top tier talent. He is just so raw in almost every attribute. Bottom line, he is super athletic and extremely talented but he needs time to grow. Singleton is a big time boom or bust talent.
C.J. Leslie is a top tier athlete that is extremely bouncy. He is a quick leaper which leads to offensive and defensive rebounds, lots of put backs and some blocks. Leslie also might be a dunk contestant at some point in his career. Leslie is a tweener, but he should be a solid player regardless.
Tristan Thompson is an extremely long player that really flourishes on the defensive end. Thompson is a very good man to man defender and a solid rebounder. Not as adept on offense, Thompson should earn his paycheck as a defender.
Kawhi Leonard is an undersized power forward physically but can also spot up from the 3 point line. Leonard isn’t quick enough to guard most small forwards, but he is an extremely hard worker who tends to be in the right place at the right time.
Shooting Guards…
Will Barton is a very good scorer. He loves to go to the rim, and is a very good finisher. Barton also has a great in between game and is a super free throw shooter. On the other hand, Barton isn’t much of a passer or defender. Still, Barton should be a nice lotto pick up for some team.
Kenny Boynton is a super quick extremely athletic undersize shooting guard. He loves to have the ball in his hands, and take shots. Boynton isn’t much of a passer and has some handling issues but he should still go in the lotto. You just can’t pass up 20 point per game scorers.
Reggie Bullock is a lean shooter in the mold of Reggie Miller. He has amazing range, way beyond the 3 point line. Bullock isn’t great at creating his own shots, but if he gets an open look he most likely will drain it.
DeQuan Jones is a beast inside. He loves to constantly attack the rim. He is a very good finisher who loves to draw contact and get to the line. Jones is also a pretty good post scorer. Jones might be a very good fit as a small forward in an inside offense.
Michael Snear is a solid scorer who is pretty athletic. He is a good jumper and has range on his jump shot out to the 3 point line. Snear isn’t much of a passer, and probably wont be much more then a backup long term.
Senario Hillman is an extremely steady player that always seems to make the right decision. Hillman almost never turns the ball over. Hillman will probably work well as a backup combo guard type player.
Scotty Hopson is a solid all around player with questionable upside. He can score inside and out, and is a plus rebounder for his position.
Manny Harris is an extremely versatile player that can do a little bit of everything. Harris has got good size and length which makes him a solid defender. Harris is also a very good passer. Shiuld be a ncie late Round 1 pick up.
Point Guards…
Maalik Wayns is such a good scorer for a point guard. He is extremely quick and is almost impossible to stop going to the basket. He isn’t a great passer, and he has some handling issues, but he is still a top tier young point guard prospect.
Abdul Gaddy is a traditional pass first point guard. He loves to find his teammates, and hes extremely careful with the ball. Might not be a scorer in BBS, but he has a chance to be a starter because of his assist to turnover ratio.
Erving Walker is a super quick undersized point guard. He is easily the quickest player in the class. Walker is also a very good long range shooter. Unfortunately he is severely undersized and doesn’t really defend or board much, even for a point guard.
