2011 Draft Notes
Perry Jones is the best player in this draft. He can play 4 positions, either forward spot, center or shooting guard, and play them all well. He can score inside and out and he has the athleticism to defend well at all those positions. Jones has amazing scoring skills and should be an All-BBS player within 5 years.
Centers…
Renardo Sidney is a big time talent with a really bad attitude and work ethic. Sidney can score, and he has great strength down low. Sidney just doesn’t have much desire to rebound or defend much. Risky selection.
Greg Smith is a solid center prospect with very good strength and size. Smith isn’t very athletic, but he is a decent post scorer and he’s a very good post defender. Smith really needs to work on his rebounding and free throw shooting. Smith should go somewhere mid to late Round 1.
Keith Benson is a good post defender and a decent low post scorer. Benson doesn’t block shots, or rebound especially well but he should still be a useful backup big man.
Solomon Alabi is a nice defender that can block some shots. Good strength and rebounding ability. Alabi should be a solid backup.
Power Forwards…
Derrick Favors is a strong athletic player that has big upside. Favors can board extremely well and has an ideal frame for a BBS big man. Favors is pretty inconsistent offensively, but he shows some real promise as a two way thread. Should go in the top 3.
Trey Thompkins is very raw. He can do a little bit of everything, score, rebound, defend, but he isn’t very athletic. Thompkins should be a good risk pick mid to late Round 1.
Jamychal Green is a hard working interior player. Green is a very good rebounder who is athletic enough to get better. Slightly undersized, Green doesn’t have much of a offensive game, especially outside of about 10 feet. Solid mid 1st round selection.
Arnett Moultrie is a decent inside scorer and defender. He is a quick jumper which is his biggest strength down low offensively. Defensively he’s a very good man to man defender. Unfortunately Moultrie doesn’t really rebound well or block shots.
Herb Pope is a very nice post scorer. His strength and jumping ability really give him an edge down low. Pope is also a decent rebounder. He isn’t much of a defender though, and he may not be athletic enough to improve too much.
Pranas Skurdauskas is an interesting prospect. Really more of a defender rebounder type but he shows some promise. Not going to block a ton of shots, but he’s a scrappy defender type. He might turn into something pretty nice in a couple years.
Luke Babbitt is a solid scorer and rebounder for a big man. He has 3 point range and a decent post game, but he doesn’t defend much. Probably a perfect fit as a bench combo forward.
Small Forwards…
Jordan Hamilton is a very good scorer. He can get to the basket, pull up from midrange or shoot from the 3 point line. He is a very balanced offensive player. Hamilton also tens to turn the ball over some and his defense is pretty poor.
Jeffery Taylor is a superb defensive player. One of the few wings in recent memory that actually thrives on defense. Can get steals and defend man to man. Taylor is a very good athlete but he’s extremely raw on offense. His jump shot is ugly passed about 15 feet. Taylor could be a very solid role player just because of his defense.
Elias Harris is an athletic high flyer. He is an amazing dunker and he has elite speed and quickness. Harris can score inside and is also a pretty good rebounder. His long range game is pretty inconsistent as is his handle. Probably more of a complimentary player long term then a star.
Kyle Singler can shoot and board. He’s also a pretty good passer and play maker. Defensively he’s pretty bad though. He wont be more then a role player in BBS.
Kris Joseph loves to attack the rim. He can finish inside, and he tends to go to the foul line a lot. Joseph is a very good athlete who really plays more like a power forward then a small forward. He should be a solid pro player, but not a star.
Wesley Witherspoon is a solid shooting, good defending small forward. Witherspoon is a nice 3 point specialist type. Witherspoon can also block shots and play some solid man to man defense on the wings.
Shooting Guards…
Travis Leslie is the top shooting guard in the draft. Leslie has jaw dropping physical talent. He is super quick and can jump through the roof. He is also a very good defender, excelling in steals and blocking shots. Leslie is also a plus rebounder. Any team that drafts him should consider moving him to small forward so his rebounding can flourish. Offensively he is very raw, but his tremendous upside makes him a lock for a top 8 selection.
Alec Burks is a prototypical BBS shooting guard. Good size at 6-6. Solid shooting stroke, with the ability to get better. Burks is also a solid perimeter defender, although he doesn’t get many steals. Better offensively to start then Leslie, but doesn’t have the defense, rebounding or athleticism that Leslie has. Still Burks should be a top 5-8 selection.
LaceDarius Dunn is a very good mid range shooter. Dunn also can knock down shots beyond the BBS 3 point line. Dunn is much more proficient offensively then defensively. Don’t expect too much growth from Dunn though, he’s more of just a role player.
Avery Bradley is an extremely quick under sized scoring guard. Bradley is pretty athletic, and loves to get to the basket and finish. Not much of a passer, and he has some turnover issues but he should still be a very nice bench scorer.
Terrico White is a super scorer. He can drive to the basket, pull up from midrange or bomb from deep. He loves to score. White doesn’t care much for defense or passing. Should be interesting to see where he ends up in the draft.
Point Guards…
Brandon Knight is a super point guard prospect. Knight is a solid scorer and a nice passer. Knight is also a decent defender for his size. Knight does tend to turn the ball over some, but he has insane upside and should be a great player regardless.
Kemba Walker is a true point guard. He loves to set up his teammates, and always seems to put them in a position to score. Walker is extremely quick and a great passer. Walker isn’t the best defender, and he has some TO issues but he should still be a very good BBS point guard.
Josh Selby is an explosive shooting guard in a point guards body. Selby is a very athletic player who loves to drive to the basket and score inside. Selby has a shooting guards mentality, always look for your own shot. Selby isn’t much of a passer, and tends to turn the ball over.
Demetri McCamey is a solid passer and shooter. He has good 3 point range. Not much of a driver, and his mid range game is just average. McCamey is a pretty nice passer, but he tends to turn the ball over some. Should be a nice mid 1st Round selection.
Malcolm Lee is a nice balanced point guard. He can do a little bit of everything. Lee is a decent scorer, nice passer and average defender. Malcolm Lee is a jack of all trades, master of none.
Corey Fisher is a solid scorer and passer. He prefers to create his own shot, but is talented enough to also set up his teammates. Fisher doesn’t like to play a whole lot of defense, and his upside is pretty limited.
