Question 1: The Deron Williams trade should have been vetoed
with Andrew fired
with Andrew fired
Mark: Fiction I think “veto/fire” was
thrown around way too casually in that thread. I think it should be
reserved pretty much solely for new GMs fresh off the trade ban
dealing with old GMs. If two legitimate GMs are going to make a trade
then it shouldn’t be an issue. This is part of the reason I was so
upset by Spence claiming he would have vetoed my Rondo deal with
Maniac had he actually accepted. The deal wasn’t good for Andrew
because in the end he shouldn’t have dealt Deron but it wasn’t
veto/fire worthy.
Insane: FictionThe trade wasn't quite
that bad because Thaddeus Young is such a stud. Though some people
seem to think that loyalty, greed and play for winner do not affect
free agency, I'm always pretty wary of trading for a disloyal expiring
guy. I wouldn't be surprised at all if Young left Houston for greener
pastures, but if he doesn't take his talents anywhere else, the trade
will have worked out just fine for Andrew. I'm still baffled as to how
Andrew passed up the offer of Monta Ellis and Xavier Henry to do
Mark's deal, though.
Marty: Fiction Fiction it should have been vetoed, but fact he should have been fired. Probably the worst GM in the league right now behind Mops, I think he’s had at most one .500 or better season in over 10 seasons in BBS which I’m sure is the worst record in all of BBS’ history including every single version of BBS.
Aaron: Fiction: It sucked but Andrew's team is in great shape for a rebuild and I don't think he wanted to keep Pig's pieces. I know he's in a vulnerable position because his activity has been spotty, but when people were talking about firing him, nobody was posting more frequently than Andrew was. Seemed silly to me. Thad's 22 and does 28 and 7 on good percentages. Still has A potential. Andrew's going to have the number one projected pick and room for three maxes. The deal sucked, but looking beyond it, his team is in really good shape. You fire a guy if his deals cripple his team, not if he gets bad value but has a good thing going.
Question 2: Jiggy is currently the GM most deserving of a pink slip
Mark: Fact Jiggy seems like a good guy
but I never see anything in terms of activity or performance. He’s
definitely replaceable. He is probably more active than I give him
credit for but I know he hasn’t done a thing in terms of winning.
Insane: FactJiggy's one of the better
personalities in the league, in my opinion. But it seems as if he's
lost interest or just plain doesn't have time to run a team anymore,
because A-Town is in a pretty sorry state right now. The Hawks' best
veteran players in Barbosa and Stackhouse are pretty mediocre by the
standards of the rest of the league, and the young talent in Hickson
and Wright while nice, aren't the type of blue-chip prospects you want
to build a winning team around. Jiggy needs to step it up and turn his
team around.
Marty: Fact: Doesn’t post very much in Off-Topic threads or League related threads. Never see him having conversations with anyone in this league his team is pretty horrible and his GM record shows it. He’s either a #8 or #7 seed or a lotto team. Never seen a team of his that was even remotely close to being a contender team and the lack of activity is just a double-negative. Doesn’t seem to bring much to the league.
Aaron: Fiction. Hype's a little bit worse, but neither guy deserves their spot. Bad teams, bad activity. I think if better GMs come along, it'll be easy to fire both guys. North seems very interested and I'd like to see him take over for either guy. Jiggy goes days without posting but does maintain his block and seems to still care about the league a bit. Hype's just completely fallen off and doesn't deserve his spot.
Question 3: Martinez should have held onto Tyreke Evans and continued rebuilding rather than dealing for Manu and Tim Duncan
Mark: Fact I can’t hold Manu’s injury
against him but my argument against his trade still holds. Tyreke
Evans is a young superstar player. Duncan and Manu are incredible
veterans but all he did was deal for TSC’s core (minus Bosh) that was
bounced in the second round of the playoffs. He wasn’t in desperate
need of extending his CY. Evans/Sergio/his pick (if he could have
dealt for it back) could have been something legitimate for the
future. At the very least he and I should have discussed what it would
take for his pick before he dealt for TD and Manu.
Insane: FactIn saying that Tyreke Evans
isn't a franchise player, it seems like Marty misjudged how good
Tyreke is really going to be. Sure, it's cool to get Duncan and Manu,
but they're in the twilight of their careers and Duncan's an expiring
contract to boot. Marty will have them running at their peak levels
for another 1-2 years while Tyreke's just about to blossom into
superstar status. This deal wouldn't have been that bad if it had
rocketed the Clippers into the rarified air of championship contender
status, but there are a couple of teams that are better than them out
West, and a couple more out East. So they just gave up on a future
superstar to become a solid team that'll be a tough out for a better
team when the playoffs come around.
Marty: Fiction: It’s easy to claim this to be a fact now that Manu is out for 40+ days but before Manu was injured the Clippers were seeded 3rd in the West and dominating games. Manu and Duncan are two elite players and guys like Sergio Rodriguez , Lamar Odom, Andray Blatche, and Joel Pryzbilla all guys that would bring something to most teams. There was no telling if the Kings were able to get both draft picks back for anything less than Tyreke Evans himself. Why not contend with two of the best players in BBS still?
Aaron: Fiction. Fact is, Marty was able to get a couple of 33 and 34 year old guys for a stud young piece. Is Tim Duncan about to be a 35 year-old free agent? Sure. Is Marty's team anywhere near good enough to contend? No. Is his only window to be decent this season and possibly next? Yeah.
Question 4: Board activity is more important for a GM in BBS than performance
Mark: Fact Fact, but a weak fact from me.
I would rather have an insanely active guy with pretty poor
performance than a great GM who never posts. I might be in the
minority there but I just can’t stand inactivity.
Insane: FictionI think it just seems like
board activity is more important because Spencer likes to call out the
inactive guys more often than he calls out the guys who are doing bad
jobs with their teams. I mean, team performance in BBS is always
somewhat regulated and takes care of itself because of the CY. But if
Spence perceives you to be slacking with activity, he has to take
steps to correct it himself, which brings more attention from the rest
of the league onto the inactive guys.
Marty: Fiction: You can be active as hell and still fail in your contract year. Being active is not going to save you from being a shit GM and losing in your contract year. It really does nothing for that, though, chances are if you are active you should have no problems or worries about the contract year at all.
Aaron: Fiction. It's about balance. You don't want a bad GM who posts a lot. Even if he avoids the CY narrowly when the time comes, he drags down the quality of the league. And the same is true for the opposite. It's never fun to wait on playoff teams for DCs or to have someone who doesn't care about the forums winning rings. I think you can really only be a good member of BBS if you're interested in, and decent at, improving your team and contributing to the forum.
Question 5: A C+ defensive center who blocks 3 shots per game is a better FBB defender than an A defensive center who blocks 1 shot per game
Mark: Fiction There are too many
variables involved here for me to say fact. I would have definitely
said ‘Fact’ if it was a B- defender. I really doubt post defense is
irrelevant and I’m going to assume that the difference between a C+
and A grade (for this question) is a difference in post defense. 3 BPG
is not that unusual. 4 BPG and C+ defense would be greater than A
defense and 1 BPG though.
Insane: FictionYou don't get to watch the
games, so you don't actually know or see how players are defending
each other, you only see the numbers on the score sheet. The only
defensive numbers you will see are steals and blocks, so those are the
most tangible ways of quantifying defense in sim leagues. Of course,
you could always break down the field goal percentages of a certain
player's check, but who does that? Also, since you only see the
numbers, there will be certain errors in the numbers because they
can't account for subs getting buckets scored on them, subs locking
their check down, and other variables. So, blocks and steals tend to
get over rated.
Marty: Fiction: You’d have to take a better look at the game logs and see how players played against the C+ and A rated defender respectively. If the opposing players are shooting over .500 and scoring at will against the C+ center and the A center only getting 1 block is holding opponents to less than .500 I’ll take the A center all day long
Aaron: Fact. If everything else is equal, I'm taking the 3 blocks a night. Somehow, blocks are like a magic potion in FBB. An extra two a night makes a player and a team a lot better. Maybe good shotblockers just contest a shitload of shots and it doesn't show in the box score, but I think it's generally hard to be an effective defensive big man with 1 block a night.
Question 6: Jeff does not get enough credit for the Nets championship
Mark: Fact I feel like he doesn’t get any
credit at all which is extreme. He inherited Chris Paul and Noah so
yeah, he shouldn’t get full credit (or even close to it). However, he
did trade for the Celtics pick which became Tyreke Evans and
eventually played a huge role in getting Carmelo (his best player). It
wouldn’t surprise me at all if he has a terrible rebuild when the time
comes and settles into slightly above average territory once these
inherited assets go away. He did deal for Melo though and that counts
for something.
Insane: FictionHe gets just enough
credit. Obviously he inherited Paul and Noah, but he drafted Sergio
and flipped that for Melo, who is actually his best player. Erbes also
dealt for Pierce, who was a really under rated part of the title run.
Marty: Fiction: Chris Paul and Noah were already on the team. Steve also helped make some moves that put the Nets in the position they are today and Carmelo Anthony was pretty much a gift after the Nets refused at least three or four times to trade for him. Until he proves he can do it on a consistent basis he deservedly should not get credit for the Nets championship.
Aaron: Fiction. Jeff inherited Paul and Noah. Obviously Melo was a huge addition but I'm pretty confident Spence had a lot to do with Jeff putting the pieces together to get him. I don't know. Hard to say if Jeff's a good or bad GM at this point, but he was given a situation that would've been pretty impossible to mishandle. I certainly don't blame Jeff. It's hard to inherit Paul and Noah and decide you're going to move them to prove yourself. A lot of guys might do that, but if you're interested in building a contender, it's clearly the wrong move. But considering Jeff's new, asks Spence a lot of questions and has Mark for a roommate, I think it's hard to say anything beyond, "Jeff did a decent job" regarding his title.
Question 7: TSC was just joking when he started a free-style thread asking for tips
Mark: Fiction Fiction, but TSC is clearly
an idiot socially. I don’t know how someone could possibly post a
thread asking for free style tips seriously but I’m pretty sure he
did. Like a couple of other people have mentioned, it wouldn’t
surprise me if he was younger than he claims. We’ve all been in high
school, right? Would a “rap battle” cause such a scene that the
principal would give a kid three detentions? Seems more middle
school-ish to me. Pig had a rap battle (lolz) when we were in high
school and obviously no one was punished as a result.
Insane: FictionThis guy is such a dork.
Can't wait for Play to snap on him for using the n-word, shit's gonna
be hilarious. Going off on a bit of a tangent here, I'll rank the new
GM's: TSC > Game > Traves >>>>>>> Mops. Not in terms of GM'ing
ability, of course, but their personalities and how much I can stand
them. TSC rocketed himself up the list with the rap thread, and he'll
really cement his place atop the new GM rankings if he provides video
footage of his rap battle. Game is just funny because I have to work
so hard to connect the dots on his posts. Traves is a Leafs fan. Mops
just tries too hard.
Marty: Fact: Apparently TSC, formerly known as T5C, was in one league and lied about having cancer. He quit said league and a day later popped up in another league. He’s 17 or 18 years old and I remember being in sim leagues back then and lieing about stuff all the time.. while I never said something so stupid like lieing about cancer I wouldn’t be surprised if half the stuff he says is fake. Also apparently from In5ane, no not the one in this league who goes by the same name(yeah how cool are these two guys calling themselves “insane!”) TSC is known as a cheater. I don’t know how or why I really didn’t care to ask and he really didn’t elaborate
Aaron: Fiction. I think he's pretty naive and doesn't really know how he makes himself look in his posts. I mean, his first line in a rap was, "they used to call me that fat Asian n---a". He talked about going up against three Jews for god knows what reason, and then went on about getting detention from his principal. Fucking nerdfest. I also am pretty confident he's like 13 or something.
Question 8: CC should be welcomed back to BBS with open arms when he gets more free time
Mark: Fact No doubt about this one.
Leaving to play COD and blaming it on a lack of time was weird but CC
is who he is as a GM. He’s maybe a little above average, stalls on
deals to ask Spence, and won’t ever have a great core unless they’re
old as hell or he lucks into some great TCs. He is too reluctant to
make risky trades to consistently put together winners. He’s also way
too committed to raping in trades. He’s an active GM though and isn’t
someone you can take advantage. Good guy to have.
Insane: FactHe was the most active GM up
until CoD came out. Still think it was pretty lame of him to quit BBS
completely because of a video game, but whatever. Still don't buy his
story about having a girlfriend. Still suspect that the girl in the
picture he showed everyone was his cousin or something. Still think
the term "cupcaking" is one of the gayest things I've ever heard. When
he's ready, he should be able to provide BBS with more activity and he
always seems to have nice teams, so why not?
Marty: Fiction: CC quit because his team sucked and he got knocked out of the playoffs early again. He’s not a very good GM yeah he has a good regular season teams but he’s horrible at making DCs which is why he never goes far in playoffs. His expectations for his team are also clearly unreasonable. I think there was a time where he had Amare Stoudemire on his team and no one else, and was upset that he wasn’t the #1 seed in the West. If he ever comes back to this league I’ll quit he’s a joke and needs to stick to COD. I mean though I don’t doubt he doesn’t have much time… his girlfriend must have yelled at him for being on sim leagues to often and I know being a Barista at Starbucks is extremely time consuming!
Aaron: Fact. Yes, of course. Why not? He's been extremely active for a while. OK, he can be kind of lame and is an easy target. But he's a middle of the road GM with a lot of interest and activity when he's in the right mood. We can do a lot worse.
Question 9: All things considered, DJ is a top 3 GM in BBS
Mark: Fiction I think DJ is a better GM
than he gets credit for but I wouldn’t put him top-3. The fact that he
always has a good team is definitely worth something which is why he
would probably be in my top-7 if I had to rank it. But, I don’t think
he goes for it enough and too often is towing the line with veterans
and youth on the same roster. That allows him to consistently contend
but never dominate.
Insane: FactConsidering the overall body
of work, the top 3 GM's are probably Mark, Play and DJ. I think one of
DJ's best strengths is his DC making ability. Anyone remember when DJ
kept taking average teams deep into the playoffs? This guy really is
able to turn water into wine in terms of getting the most out of the
players he has. He never seems to tank, makes the playoffs quite
often, and once he gets there, his record has been pretty good, with
one championship to show for it. That's good enough for me.
Marty: Fiction: This would be true if he actually held conversations with people, actually showed that he cared about this league, actually did stuff for the league, suggested things for the league. Great he sits on his teams, makes a few trades here and there, builds a few good teams, maybe wins 1 championship or two, but he will never be a top 3 GM. If he ever leaves no one will remember him because he’s pretty much ghost to everyone in this league.
Aaron: Fiction. DJ's teams overachieve but he's not a top three GM. I don't think he ever really commits to anything and I think he gets complacent for long stretches. Obviously he can do more with a 7th or 8th seed than probably anyone else in BBS, which I think means if he tried harder to build true contenders, he'd have a high success rate.
Question 10: Outlawz is the ex-GM who would be the best addition if a spot opened up
Mark: Fact Fact, although this is much
closer now that Ashes has quit. For the purpose of this question I’ll
just assume that Reilly, Hernando, and Krupinski aren’t options
(although I really don’t think Dave is a bad option for another GM
spot). Neither Outlawz nor Ashes is particularly active but Outlawz is
more likely to have a great team IMO.
Insane: FactI'd love to see him take over
Atlanta, he could really turn that franchise around. However, I know
that both he and Spencer are pretty stubborn people, so chances of
Outlawz coming back. In order for Outlawz to come back, one or both of
them have to get over what happened, which I don't think is possible.
Marty: Fiction: I want to say FACT but he’s not active enough, if he’s not a top 3 team he’s pretty much ghost and non-existent.
Aaron: Fiction. Outlawz was a pretty brutal member of BBS for a while. Still a good GM, but the activity sucked and he was one of the most negative personalities in the league. Not a lot of great GMs out there to rejoin, considering guys Reilly, Hernando and Krup aren't coming back. But I think Outlawz brings the league down and I'd definitely prefer guys like Ashes and Matt to Outlawz.
Question 11: The initial trade ban should be lifted for new GMs
Mark: Fiction Stupid question. The trade
ban should definitely remain although shortening it wouldn’t be a bad
idea if it’s more than a week currently (I have no clue if it is).
It’s pretty easy to take advantage of the new GMs (even the good ones)
when they are not the familiar with the rosters. I’m sure they are
bombarded with trade offers as soon as they take over a team and it’s
good that Spence steps in and maintains order until they have a better
understanding of talent with our file. It also gives them time to get
acclimated with the league without unknowingly setting the franchise
back two seasons.
Insane: FictionWhile it would've been
great to have TSC fired early on so he couldn't have bragged later
about building a good team, the league needs the trade ban. New guys,
no matter the skill level, need time to get used to the ratings, know
who's over-rated and under-rated, and get acclimated to the trade
market in general. Also, completely raping the new guys will just lead
to a few powerhouse teams that no one can keep up with, could you
imagine if the Nets had gotten Bosh?
Marty: Fiction: No reason it should be lifted. New GMs can still trade they just need to go through Specner first makes sense to me. Imagine having a new guy come in, destroys his team, and then disappears in a week, what then?
Aaron: Fiction. Spence is taking risks with new hires and I think that's a good thing for the league. Some of the most enthusiastic GMs here are recent, first or second time additions who aren't used to the kind of activity in BBS. That leads to enthusiasm, but it also can overwhelm GMs, so I think the league is better off if they're protected. However, I'd give them a three-day period in which any deal must be approved by Spence. Anything longer and maybe they're just not that good of a fit.
Question 12: Deron Williams and Chris Paul are the two most valuable pieces in BBS right now
Mark: Fiction Deron is the most valuable
player in the league but Paul isn’t #2 and it’s not close to me. Paul
isn’t even the most valuable player on his own team. LeBron is quite a
bit ahead of Paul and then there are a lot of names who are arguably
better (Gerald Wallace, Randolph, Ed Curry, Amare, Dwight, a veteran
like Kobe, etc). Paul is very good and a top-10 player but he is not
top-2.
Insane: FictionSomeone's forgetting about
LeBron James. I don't rate Chris Paul as being on the level of LeBron
and Deron, who, to me, are the clear-cut two best players in the
league. In determining value, the stats, ratings, age, and contract
have to be factored in. Chris Paul doesn't quite match up to Deron or
LeBron in stats or ratings, and they're all 25-26 years old with
reasonable max contracts, so the value is quite clear to see here.
Marty: Fact: Yes and this is why Andrew should have been fired. Any team that has these two guys ,regardless of what other pieces they had, were on the fast track to a championship. Andrew needed to build around Deron, not around a guy like Thad who may not even be around come Free Agency time.
Aaron: Fiction. I'd take LeBron and GWall over Paul. Yeah, Paul's the back-to-back MVP and an amazing player, but LeBron fills the stat sheet better than anyone in the league, and is a 30/10 guy at that. He's an A/A scorer doing 2 SPG and 2 BPG a night with excellent FG percentages, so I don't think this one's really even close. GWall does 35 PPG in 38 minutes and is probably the best defender in BBS. Also doing near 2 BPG and SPG a night, 8.5 rebs, and shooting 54% from the field. Crazy good. I don't think Paul is really that far ahead of guys like Melo and Curry in value.
