2009 Draft Notes
The 2009 Draft is the draft of Blake Griffin and the point guards. There are literally a handful of players that could go 1st overall one being Blake Griffin, the other 4 are all point guards. Tyreke Evans, Brandon Jennings, Steph Curry and Ricky Rubio are all elite level point guards that could go #1. Griffin is a very good young big man that can score inside and board. He isn’t the big time shot blocker or defender that most teams’ desire, but he plays D well enough to get by. He is a plus rebounder and should be a very efficient inside scorer. Tyreke Evans is a big risk reward type. He has a wonderful inside game on offense. He loves to take his defender off the dribble and get to the basket. His jump shot is a work in progress, but when he is knocking it down he is very hard to defend. Brandon Jennings is an offensive machine. He loves to shoot, loves to score. Always needs to have the ball in his hands. Jennings is also slowly becoming a better passer. He should be a great BBS point guard. Steph Curry is a better shooter then Jennings, but has less athleticism. Curry has unbelievable range on his shoot, and isn’t afraid to take difficult shots when the shot clock runs down. Curry lacks strength and doesn’t defend much beyond getting some steals. Ricky Rubio is an amazing creator and passer. He is dazzling with the ball in his hands and can make some amazing passes. Because of his love of the big play, he does tend to make some turnovers. Rubio should lead the BBS in assists one day.
That was a quick overview of the top talents, now lets look at the rest of the 2009 BBS Draft…
Centers…
Hasheem Thabeet is a huge center prospect that can block shots. Unfortunately he is also extremely slow, un-athletic and he has bad hands...BJ Mullens is very raw. He has nice measurables and was highly recruited coming out of high school. In college he didn’t do much to impress, but you can’t teach height…
Power Forwards…
DeJuan Blair is a very good post scorer who is extremely strong. Blair is also a plus rebounder. But, keep in mind his FT and midrange shooting is poor, he isn’t athletic, and he has some major injury issues...Tyler Hansbrough is a scrapy big man that has some decent post moves. He really is more of an energy guy than a skilled player. he can board and score, but his defense is almost non existent...Jordan Hill is pretty raw. He has a decent offensive game, but he’s more of a jump shooter then a post player. Hill can block some shots, and he’s athletic enough to be a good defender. Unfortunately he just doesn’t seem to be a good basketball player. He’s more of an athlete in a basketball uniform...Taj Gibson is a solid player that can board and defend. Gibson is a good man to man defender, solid help defend but pretty raw offensively. He should be a solid late 1st round selection.
Small Forwards…
DeMar DeRozan is a high flyer that loves to dunk. He is a great jumper who is also very strong. Has trouble creating shots for himself, and doesn’t pass much but offensively he is a very fun player to watch…Terrence Williams is an extremely skilled player. He can score, pass and defend. He loves to have the ball in his hands and can make big plays for his teammates or himself. He is prone to turning the ball over, and his defense is just mediocre at this point but he does have some nice upside...James Johnson is a plus defender and rebounder right now. He can block shots and create steals. He is a solid rebounder for his size. Big enough to play some power forward as well. On offense he is a bit erratic. He turns the ball over some and he takes some bad shots...Victor Claver is a very nice offensive player that has the size to perhaps wing to PF. Claver isn’t super athletic, so he might project to more of a tweener forward type that comes off the bench. Might be best suited for that role or a SF in an inside offense…Omri Casspi is a solid player. He can score from inside and out. Nice jumper out to 3 point range. Handles the ball well, but isn’t a gifted passer. He is a pesky defender, although defense is clearly his big weakness...Jonas Jerebko is a nice role player small forward. Jerebko is a solid defender and rebounder. His scoring is pretty average at this point, but he doesn’t turn the ball over and he doesn’t take bad shots. He could develop into a starting SF eventually...Earl Clark is extremely versatile. He is a jack of all trades, master of none type. More of an athlete then a skilled player, Clark doesn’t really have a position. He’d be a nice backup type on an up-tempo team that needed rebounding and defense off the bench...Austin Daye is primarily an offensive player. He has good quickness, he can shoot and he can drive to the basket. Unfortunately he really does play like a shooting guard so his size is kind of wasted. Daye is extremely frail and weak, and that will probably limit his future in BBS...Chase Budinger is a pretty talented wing player that can handle and pass the rock well for a guy with his size. Budinger is also a solid shooter that could fit in well as a backup on an outside focus team. He is also a much better help defender then man to man defender.
Shooting Guards…
James Harden is a very nice 2 way player that should be a solid BBS starter. He can score inside and out. He has a nice handle and can even pass a little. He isn’t a dominant defender, but he is good enough...Gerald Henderson is a very good defender. He is an elite man to man defender right now. Henderson is also a very good jump shooter and ball handler. Offensively, other then his jump shot he is very mediocre. Henderson could get better, but his athleticism suggests he doesn’t have much upside...Marcus Thornton is a very good shooter. His range is outstanding, way out beyond the 3 point line. Thornton is just an offensive player at this point, and doesn’t ever really grade out to be a good defender. Offensively he could be special though...Wayne Ellington is a smart offensive player with a nice jump shot. Ellington is also a very quick player with nice jumping ability. He could be a solid bench player in a couple years.
Point Guards…
Jrue Holiday is a nice athletic point guard prospect with good upside. He has plus size for a 1, and is pretty athletic. His 3 point shot is pretty mediocre, but he can get to the rim and he has a nice jump shot. With his size and length Holiday could be a special defender one day. He will be a very good lotto selection overall...Darren Collison is a super quick point guard prospect with a nice shooting touch. Collison is very good from midrange and has an improving 3 point shot. Collison is also a very solid man to man defender...Jonny Flynn is a very strong athletic point. Flynn is super quick and has a very good jump shot. Defensively Flynn is just average but he has some upside so he could become a very good point guard eventually...Ty Lawson looks to be a plus backup point guard in BBS. He might not have the athleticism or upside to be a starter, but his intangibles are very good. He can shoot, handle and pass. He should be a wonderful late 1st round selection...Rodrique Beaubois isn’t a true point. He is much more of a scoring combo guard type. His quickness is top end, very rare. He can blow by his defenders and get to the rim. His shot is improving. He probably won’t have turnover problems at shooting guard. Beaubois is a big time 6th man scorer type player.
