THE PIGPEN
Today we invite BBS Commish Spencer Martin to sit down in the Trough with us as we discuss his league, GM's and where everything is going in BBS.
Pig: How have you viewed the transition from BBS Version 1 to where we are in present day. How have you grown as a Commish? What steps do you need to take to strengthen the BBS product?
Spencer: Id say Ive focused more on things that I enjoy. Making it fun for me. I think its been a learning process for everyone and along the way Ive learned I like activity. I like making GMs do more to be in the league. Its gotten to the point that most GMs need to post and check in every day and do articles to win. Because I have learned what makes me happy, the activity, I think I have grown as a commish. I still think I take certain things too personally but BBS is something I spend probably too much free time on, so when someone talks negatively of the amount of work I put in I get pissed. Just how I am. AS far as strengthening the product, I think its more about pushing GMs when they are inactive. Not letting people rest on their reputation. Forcing people out even if they are popular because they no longer offer anything to the league. Just making sure the most deserving 29 GMs are always in place.
Pig: How do you feel your draft files have been in order to control league parity? Is there anything you feel you might need to improve on.
Spencer: I love the draft files from this version. Even with insane amounts of freebie increases and AC's and RC's I think the ratings are pretty good. I think overall Ive lowered the amount of potential I give out to all draft classes. It makes for less exciting TC's but overall its worth it because there isnt so much talent in the league that ratings are boring. We still have guys with very pedestrian ratings sim very well. AS for improving, just making sure I continue to keep things in line. Its easy to slowly increase ratings as the league gets older. But that just makes things worth. I think its also important to never flood the league with too much talent at any 1 position.
Pig: If you could make a singular BBS with GM's from all time who would it include and why?
Spencer: Well first off it would need to include, personality, talent and activity. Itd be impossible to really name 29 GMs but Ill give you a small sample size of guys who were good members from the past and why.
Silk - BBS1 - Just a very smart GM that took his time to make deals and always dealt with people he was superior to. Never made a bad deal. Was active. And despite his ability to rape, he was still popular.
Brian - BBS1 - Very popular. Consistently won. Funny, good guy to have around. Very active. Just brought some fun conversations and input into the league.
Reilly - BBS1 - Absolutely dominated. Got every pick for a draft class. That draft class happened to be the best draft of all time. Just ridiculous success and activity. Superb former member.
Kmartje - BBS1 - Danny was just a fun guy. He was a mediocre GM, but he was active and funny. Just wanted to have a good time and chat it up.
Krupinski - BBS2 - Difficult to get along with, but a very good and active GM. Started some controversies here and there, but it helped league activity. Selfish and single minded, but having him in BBS actually helped me as a Commish long term.
James - BBS2 - Solid active Gm that has fun and has good interesting things to say. Always good for mindless banter. Great for activity. Also a wonderful person to have for sigs and logos.
Hernando - BBS2 - He was active and fun and a good GM. He had interesting things to say and usually kept things light. Never really had problems with him, he just wanted to have fun. Good Gm to have.
Duce - BBS2 - Kinda crazy but a good Gm that put a ton of effort in.
Blue - BBS3 - Very active, good Gm with some logo making capabilities. Just a solid member who always spent tons of time on the board. Usually always had a good team too.
Ebener - BBS3 - Difficult but good member. When he was into it, he was a good GM and active. Always seemed to love sports and usually had some good insights.
A2J - BBS3 - Mediocre GM but a great personality. Always had good storied. Really popular.
Dru - BBS3 - Mediocre summertime GM. He was fun. Always had good insights.
WillC - BBS3 - Nah, just kidding!
Jordan - All versions - Sucks he didnt have the time to be active here. He was so good in every other version.
Pig: Who has surprised you as a GM in this version? Who have you been dissapointed with? Who in your opinion has made the biggest stride in becoming a strong GM either over the course of this version or over all the BBS's.
Spencer: I was surprised the most with Blue and Jordan. Both just didn't have the time this version and it sucked. They were 2 members I counted on to be good and active. They just weren't and it was kind of a shock. As for the biggest improvement Id have to go with Nova and Skillz. They both have become upper echelon Gms and I never really thought that would happen. Both have become much better at almost every aspect of sim leagues.
Pig: If you were to meet with any GM in the league for lunch who would it be? What would you talk about?
Spencer: This is tough. No one really jumps into my mind. Id guess Id go with Dj mostly because I know so little about him. AS for questions, Id ask why his taste in women is so eclectic.
Pigs Note: I was for sure thinking he was going to say Aaron
Pig: Top 5 GM's, Bottom 5 GM's? Who are they and for the bottom 5 what can they do to improve their stock in your opinion.
Spencer Top 5.
Outlawz. Nova. Mark. Skillz. Play.
Bottom 5.
Galo. Martinez. Styro. Jeff. JAH.
For Galo I think he just makes really bad trades occasionally. ALso I dotn think he sticks to a system. Hell have a ton of outside shooters, then hell trade for a post player that cant defend. And youre like, WTF?
Martinez just has ADD. he gets bored and makes bad trades and ruins himself for a couple years.
Styro hasnt done much here. Just doesnt seem to be proactive enough.
Jeff had such a wonderful team and he just blew it. I just dont see him making moves to be elite.
JAH just sits on his team too much. Geez, make a trade already.
Pig: How do you feel about GM created draft files and when (if at all) can we expect them to be implemented in this version of BBS.
Spencer: I believe weve slated somewhere between 2013 and 2015 to be GM players. I love them. Its harder for me to do, but they create so much activity and much more uncertainty. They were a huge success in BBS3 and I expect them to be huge again here.
Pig: Who are the top 5 most valuable players to have in BBS right now?
Spencer: Fun questions.
Allen Iverson is nasty. Just so good.
LeBron James is gonna be so good. Hes already good, and he'll only get better.
Kevin Garnett is just all world defensively and very good offensively. Extremely rare.
Tim Duncan is kinda hating life right now on the Cavs, but hes awesome. So efficient. So good defensively. Very rare.
Martynas Andriuskevicius is the next big thing. Beware.
Pig: Open forum.....anything you want to say you can do it here!
Spencer: BBS is doing pretty well right now. We need Maniac and Martinez to come back and be strong. We need more articles and more posting. We need 200k in posts by Christmas. K, thanx bye.
