A Pigpen Exclusive
*Welcome to The Pig Network's "Who Gives a Shit Wednesday" special BBS Marathon. You have just watched "The Death of Danny Granger" and up at 8:00 is the critcially acclaimed documentary "The Legend of Lumley." Right now is "An Interview W/Pig" Thanks for tuning in an enjoy.*
Welcome to another edition of "The Pigpen." I am your host Poktholomew Barnstorm and here I sit down with Houston Rockets GM Pig as we talk about some BBS related issues. So grab your popcorn and sit with us for an hour as we cry, laugh and listen to one of BBS's most entertaining GM's.
Barnstorm: Welcome Pig I cannot tell you more than enough how much of a pleasure it is to have you hear on the show today.
Pig: *slides the shades off his eyes* Really excited to be here Barny.
Barnstorm: Alright, so Pig tell us how you got into becoming one of the elite General Managers on the net? Becoming a part of the greatest sim league on the net?
Pig: Well, it all started off when I was around 3. All the neighborhood kids were into playing Tonka in the sandbox and pretending they were Dominique Dawes on the monkey bars on the Jungle Gym. I however was different. I would sit on the bench and would be frantically trying to get salaries to match using only a crayola and a Thomas the Engine notebook. It was hard for a aspiring GM to get his sim on back then. Most in part due to the lack of luxuries we take for granted today such as FBB and tradecheck.
Hell Crayola was a very intricate part of me growing up. When I got to 7 I started trading crayons to other boxes. Traded colors in the 24 crayon box to the 64 box. I made some rookie mistakes but I learned a lot. I vividly remember a cold stormy day in Febuary of 1996. Just pulled of a highly controversial trade sending Burnt Sienna and Olive Green over to the 24 box for Yellow-Green. At the time Yellow-Green was a highly touted prospect but had some stability issues. The trade was viewed as a bust as Burnt Sienna and Olive Green were some highly seasoned vets while Yellow-Green hit the sharpener weeks later for "Assualt on a Wall" and never recovered. The press killed me for that deal. My mother slapped a trade-ban on my ass and league sanctions caused me to lose dessert and video games for the weekend. Brutal times, but what breaks you makes you stronger.
I think it was when I was 8 I gained the trust back of the fans. The league extended to a 128 Crayon Box and we had some really great talent coming in from the other side of Wal-mart. I signed Midnight Blue to a lucrative 3 drawing deal which I consider to be the turning point in my career. My GM abilities really payed off during the first drawing and Midnight Blue, an unknown at the time came off the bench and really logged some solid minutes.
Midnight Blue's first drawing in the Crayola League.
It was then that I knew I wanted to take my General Managing abilities to the next step. I knew I had something going on. Midnight Blue became a 7 time All-Star and really caused havoc for the drawing, painting and finger painting communites. I knew I could rise higher though. I needed a bigger challenge.
Barnstorm: Interesting, so when did you actually become a BBS GM.
Pig: Well it was pretty interesting actually. For years I went on life without a path. The light at the end of the tunnel was painted a stormy black. It wasn't until Paul James Travers 10th grade history class that I really found my calling.
I was a quiet boy back then, just trying to learn about the Treaty of Versailles when I heard some giggling in the back. Mark Kelley and Aaron Haberman were two fellow students of mine and they had a penchant for getting into trouble. Back then these were the mischief makers who start food fights in the cafeteria and tabletop kids on the playground. These sons of bitches didn't even have the courtesy to get you on the field. If you were on the blacktop and these guys saw you it was open season. Real fucking low lifes. Anyway, after carefully inspecting what they were doing I figured out they were discussing NBA Basketball. I loved the NBA but didn't want to risk my credibility associating with these clowns who pirated kids dreams. Temptation got the best of me and "The Game" was soon created. "The Game" consisted of completley blowing off the teachers lecture and quickly scribbling down as many NBA players you could before the other. For the first time in my life I felt vivid and alive. Soon after this Aaron and Mark invited me to join BBS. The rest is history.
Barnstorm: So now that you have come to BBS. What have you learned.
Pig: You learn something new each day. Each active day though *laughs*. You're like a sponge sucking up information. Everybody learns off of each other and competes in a friendly environment. Well now a day at least. Back in BBS 2 and 3 the environment could get very turbulent and feelings were hurt. GM's would be sacrficed by others. GM's sisters would be posted up on the boards. Andy would be lacking in porn filmstrips. It was chaotic. People didn't know where there loyalties stood and rightfully so.
However, you can't find a better group of GM's on the internet. The evolution over time has really strengthened the league and GM's. Even the lower tier GM's are pretty compared when compared to the rest of the internet. There is a lot of variance and overall it makes the league more exciting.
Barnstorm: You seem to really enjoy BBS. What are you looking forward too in the league? What do you dislike so far?
Pig: Well I am really looking forward to my inevitable domiance of the league in a couple of years. That should be fun. I might actually post in sim threads with shit relating to the sim. Doubt it though. Also really looking forward to GM Created Players for the draft. Spence (I believe) isn't really wild about it and I can see why. BBS is obviously his baby and he loses some creative control when we move to this process. I think that it is awesome and is up there as one of my favorite parts of BBS just because it really brings out the creative juices and boosts activity as a whole. Unless you're Dan Basone who is the Gastapo of "Fake Players" and flips a shit when your guys aren't named "Dan White" and "Bob Jones."
As far as dislike. I extremley dislike when winning GM's post "Good Series (Insert losing GM's name here)" during the playoffs. If someone ever said that to me I would hit them with a bludger. Seriously. "YEAH I KNOW IT WAS A FUCKING GOOD SERIES DICKFACE, YOU JUST WON." Irritates the shit out of me. Other then that I hate PP threads. Fucking assholes like CC and Insane don't add any intelligence to PP threads. The PP thread is an artform and these goombas are fucking throwing paint on a pallet. I want to talk about real life things. I want to talk about the best combination for building a bear with hype. I want to talk UFC with Mark. I want to talk about porn with Andy. I don't wanna have a quoting war with CC.
Barnstorm: Who are the weakest GM's in the league? Strongest? Where do you place yourself.
Pig: You know we have these GM Rankings all the time and they aren't ever fucking legit because it is just who has been doing well and who hasn't. In order to construct the most accurate GM rankings you have to put W/L behind and judge thought process. I think Nova has to be really high up there because he seems to be a genuine thinking man and is always 3 steps ahead. Skillz and Outlawz would defintley fall in the same category. DJ seems to do a lot of thinking but his lack of commentary really inhibits me to figure him out. However, this could also act as the achillies heel for GM's. Andy has pretty decent thought process when it comes to GMing but his lack of success might push him down on GM Rankings. Mark has always been strong and continues to be.
I am going to substiute weak for unimpressed/haven't seen much out of. I don't think the technical definition of "weak" applies to any GM's in the league. I think the two big players here would have to be Ashes and Insane. Ashes just came in a little while ago so I would have to give him some slack and he did have some decent teams in Houston. I'd probably plug in Jeff and Hype somewhere around there, probably higher. Galo is easily the hardest to deal with and getting a PM from him about a trade is the equivalent of Death by Firing squad. Insane just doesn't wow me with what he has done so far. I would probably have to say the same with Gregg even though he does surprise me in a good way at times. Doesn't mean they are bad, they just have to figure the pieces of the puzzle. Aaron is a lot better GM that he has put out so far, I think it will click for him sooner rather than later though. I would still stick him in my top 10 GM's in my rankings. Probably most likely put Styro, Jiggy and Martinez at the bottom though. It might be unfair to Jiggy because I haven't really followed the Hawks too much but I haven't seen anything great put together. Styro was already CY'd once and I haven't seen anything that shows he is rapidly moving up the ladder. Martinez is just Martinez and I don't ever see him having a legit championship contender anytime in the near future.
As far as myself I have always been middle of the pack and probably will stay there. With that said when I want to play a chess game in this league I think I do it among the best. Also I think I roll out some great playoff DC's (when I am a legit compeitor). I have a strategy which comes to trades which was implemented when I had periods of less activity. I m looking to change that now and get more aggressive but at the time I thought it was the best method when I am not totally in touch with the league.
Barnstorm: Which GM's have surpised you so far? Good and Bad?
Pig: Without question Broph. I used to rip this kid a lot for destroying the Buffalo Braves but he is a steady GM and I resent some of my comments earlier. One guy I had tagged for bottom tier but who has presently surprised me is Matt. Guy is very steady. He is not gonna wow you with his GM ability but he moves under the radar and has potential to make some really solid teams. I would probably place Tiger in that same category as well, probably a little higher then Matt. DBW has been very solid so far and looking forward to see some great things from him.
