Grading the First Round
Before:
1. New Jersey Nets - Chris Paul PG 6'0'' 175 20 B+ C B+ C+ D+ A
After:
Chris Paul PG 20 6'0'' 175 A- B- A C+ D+ A
The clear-cut number one pick here. The nets drafted a 20-year-old stud point guard who is already dominating the league with his numbers. You see his jump in outside shooting, wow, what an increase. Chris Paul is going to definitely win a few MVP in his tenure in BBS. Great first selection. Grade: A+
Before:
2. Houston Rockets - Deron Williams PG 6'3'' 210 21 C+ B- B B- C A
After:
Deron Williams PG 21 6'3'' 210 B- B B+ B+ C- A
The rockets took Deron Williams here and again, this was a perfect pick. The first two players in this draft did nothing but what they were expected to do in TC, explode. Williams looks like he will definitely make a case against Paul for who is the best to come out of this class. Right now Williams is leading the rockets in PPG with 25 on 46 % shooting. Another great pick. Grade: A+
Before:
3. Miami Heat - Andrew Bogut C 7'0'' 245 20 B C- C- B- B- A
After:
Andrew Bogut C 20 7'0'' 245 B+ C- C- B B- B
This is where things get a bit tricky and any of these guys coming up could potentially go in any order. Bogut was taken three here and while he did see a rise in inside scoring and defense his potential did go down. Still Andrew is putting up 18 and 9 with 1.5 blocks per game. It is solid pick but it is too early to tell. Will he be more than just an offensive big man? Well see. Grade: B+
Before:
4. Houston Rockets - Danny Granger SF 6'8'' 225 22 B- C+ C- B C A
After:
Danny Granger SF 22 6'8'' 225 B- B- C- B- C A
One really great pick for the Rockets exploded and their second pick in 4 selections does not do that much in TC. Though he went up outside he saw a decrease in defense. His potential stayed the same though, which is an awesome side for pig. I think this guy will explode in a couple TC’s. I really like the selection. Just give him some time. Grade:A-
Before:
5. Washington Wizards - Monta Ellis SG 6'3'' 175 19 B+ C C C C A
After:
Monta Ellis SG 19 6'3'' 175 B+ C+ C C+ C A
Monta Ellis was traded from the Wizards to the Bulls in the off-season. Monta saw an increase in defense and outside and still kept his A potential. The young 19 year old looks like he will be an amazing offensive player. In his rookie season so far he is averaging 17 ppg on 47 % fg shooting. He is quite the player and I love the pick. Grade: A
6.Los Angeles Lakers - Andrew Bynum C 7'0'' 285 18 C+ D+ D+ C+ B- A
Andrew Bynum C 18 7'0'' 285 B- D+ D+ B- B A
Just like in the NBA, the Lakers select Andrew Bynum in BBS. The 7 foot 18 year old had a good first tc in the league and looks like he will be a big time player here. Though he is still very young and raw it looks like the Lakers made a smart move here by picking him. Check out that frontcourt they have now, Curry, Bynum and Okur. Pretty nasty. Lets check back to see how this kid develops in a couple seasons, I’m sure he will be nasty. Grade: A
7.Portland Trail Blazers - Gerald Green SF 6'8'' 200 19 B C+ D+ C C A
Gerald Green SF 19 6'8'' 200 B- C+ D+ C- C B
Portland in search of a small forward selected Gerald Green out of Gulf Shores Academy H.S. The kid had a lot of promise and special ability. Even BBS Commissioner Spencer Martin claimed he was “A very rare prospect.” Within the first TC Basone new it was just a horrible call. Green looks to be the blazers worst draft selection and definitely a top 5 bust all time in BBS. Horrible. Grade: F
8.Orlando Magic - David Lee PF 6'9'' 249 22 B- C C C B- A
David Lee PF 22 6'9'' 249 B C C C+ B A
Magic make a great selection here of David Lee out of Florida. He goes + 3 in TC and looks like he will be a nice player in this league, definitely someone who could start in the future. Great pick for the magic that are loaded with young guys across the board. Grade: A
9.Dallas Mavericks - Fran Vázquez PF 6'11'' 240 22 C+ C- D+ B- C+ A
Fran Vázquez PF 22 6'11'' 240 B- C- C- B C+ B
Solid pick here by the Mavs. Fran goes + 2 in TC and looks like he will be a solid big. I don’t know if he will ever be dominant but he looks like he could be a solid guy off the bench maybe even a starter down the line. Grade: B+
10.Atlanta Hawks - Amir Johnson PF 6'9'' 210 18 C+ C- D+ B- C+ A
Amir Johnson PF 18 6'9'' 210 B- C- D+ B+ B- A
Wow! What a pick here at 10! Amir Johnson! Guy has some major increases across the board! Great pick by the Hawks, this guy explodes. Looks like he will be a huge player out of this draft, definitely a great pick here. Grade: A+
11.Los Angeles Clippers - Andray Blatche PF 6'11'' 235 19 C+ C D B- C+ A
Andray Blatche C 19 6'11'' 235 C+ C D B B B
Interesting pick here at 11 for the clippers. While they could of went a couple different ways trying to surround talent for Melo and West, this I thought was a pretty solid try. Blatche had some nice increases here and looks like he may be a solid starting center for them. You Rc him a bit get his shot blocking up, who knows. Grade: B
12.New Orleans Hornets - C.J. Miles SG 6'6'' 210 18 C+ B C- C C- A
C.J. Miles SG 18 6'6'' 210 C+ B- C- C C- C
Ouch. Another bust selection here. Hornets take a hit with the selection of guard C.J Miles, might even be worst than green. He goes all the way down to C potential and loses some in his outside shooting. At least his defense did not go down! Grade: F
13.Los Angeles Lakers - Yaroslav Korolev SF 6'9'' 203 18 C+ C C A C B
Yaroslav Korolev SF 18 6'9'' 203 C+ C C A- C+ C
For a guy known to be a great defender coming in it is not a good sign when his defense goes down after 1 tc. Yaroslav does not show any reasonable doubt that he will be anything more than a back up defender if that. Grade: D+
14.Miami Heat - Marvin Williams SF 6'9'' 230 19 B- C+ D+ B C B
Marvin Williams SF 19 6'9'' 230 B- B- C- B+ C B
The Heat have their second selection of the night and they picked Marvin Williams. Marvin looks like he may be a solid starter for the heat in the future as he saw increases in his outside shooting and defense. He is definitely nothing flashy yet but could be a solid player down the road. Grade: B+
15.Dallas Mavericks - Jason Maxiell PF 6'7'' 260 22 B D+ D+ B- B- B
Jason Maxiell PF 22 6'7'' 260 B D+ D+ B B B
The Mavericks have a few more picks coming up and before this one already took a big man. Jason Maxiell looks like he will be pretty good though. With B ratings in inside, defense and rebounding, the Mavericks found a good big man; will he ever become more than just a back up though? Grade: B
16.Memphis Grizzlies - Brandon Bass PF 6'8'' 240 20 B C C- B- C+ B
Brandon Bass PF 20 6'8'' 240 B+ C C- B- C+ B
Bass goes to the Grizzlies at 16 and goes up in his inside scoring. Bass looks like a dominant force inside even through the early part of the season. I like the pick here and think this kid will become a lot better down the road. Grade: B+
17.Toronto Raptors - Nate Robinson PG 5'9'' 180 21 B B- C+ C+ C B
Nate Robinson PG 21 5'9'' 180 B B- C+ C+ C C
Nate the great goes to the Raptors. The small point guard does not do much in training camp though and only looks like he will be nothing more than a back up guard. He may win a few dunk contests in his time here but that is about all he will probably show for. Grade: C
18.Miami Heat - Louis Williams SG 6'2'' 175 18 C+ B- C C D A
Louis Williams PG 18 6'2'' 175 C+ B- C C+ D B
Louis Williams goes up in defense but down in potential. There may be something left in this kid but it is too early to tell at all. Right now he is way to raw to be playing. Well see if this kid develops into anything in the future. Grade: C+
19.Philadelphia 76ers - Ronny Turiaf C 6'10'' 249 22 C+ C- C+ B+ C+ B
Ronny Turiaf C 22 6'10'' 249 B- C- C+ A- C+ B
The sixers select Ronny Turiaf at 19 and what a great pick. Ronny Turiaf goes up inside and defense. He came into the draft known for his shot blocking and any time you pick up a guy like him at 19, it is a good night. Turiaf will be a nice player in this league. Grade: A-
20.Dallas Mavericks – Marcin Gortat C 6’11’’ 240 21 B- D+ D B- B B
Marcin Gortat C 21 6’11’’ 240 B D+ D B- B C
Mavs select another big man for some reason and this guy looks all like the rest of them. Gortat goes up inside but down in potential. He looks like he could be a solid bench player but that is about it. I don’t know why the mavericks selected another big man here though. I guess they’re hoping one of them explodes. Grade: C+
21.Orlando Magic - Charlie Villanueva PF 6'11'' 240 21 B C+ C C C+ B
Charlie Villanueva SF 21 6'11'' 240 B C+ C C+ B- B
Charlie V goes up in rebounding and that’s about it. He may become something interesting in this league but right now he is too raw. I like his ratings though and if he has one good tc who knows, it may be a nice pick. But for now it is just a mystery. Grade: C+
22.Atlanta Hawks - Linas Kleiza SF 6'8'' 245 20 B B C- C C B
Linas Kleiza SF 20 6'8'' 245 B B+ D+ C C+ B
The hawks select Kleiza at 22 and it looks like a good selection. Linas is a B B+ scorer coming into his first season and increased in two areas. I like the pick up here, Linas looks like he will be a good player and at 22, which is a great pick. Grade: A-
23.Washington Wizards - Rashad McCants SG 6'4'' 207 21 B B C C C- B
Rashad McCants SG 21 6'4'' 207 B+ B+ C C+ C- A
Wow! Back to back great picks by two teams. This one might even be better than the one before. McCants looks like a stud! B+ B+ scoring in his rookie season and increase his defense and potential. Nice pick by the wizards. This is their second great pick of the night. Grade: A
24.Dallas Mavericks - Ian Mahinmi C 6'11'' 230 18 C D+ D+ B- B- A
Ian Mahinmi C 18 6'11'' 230 C D+ D+ B B B
I seriously do not know what the mavericks are doing at this point but four big men in one first round? Why? This guy Ian goes up in defense and rebounding and looks all right but goes to the maverick’s roster. The entire pf/c squad looks the same. It is weird. I would have gone in a different route here but he did increase. Grade: C+
25.Oklahoma City Thunder - Channing Frye PF 6'11'' 248 22 C+ B C- C+ C B
Channing Frye SF 22 6'11'' 248 C+ B C- B- C+ B
Channing goes up in defense and rebounding for the Thunder. Who knows maybe this kid could become a good SF now that the thunder has moved him there. He did not go down so that is a plus and at 25 if a guy goes up twice that is a good pick. Grade: B+
26.Miami Heat - Raymond Felton PG 6'1'' 198 21 C B- B- C+ C B
Raymond Felton PG 21 6'1'' 198 C B- B- C+ C C
Heat make a poor selection here as Raymond does nothing in Tc expect go down in potential. This kid may over time develop into a back up point guard but right now it looks like bust. Grade: C-
27.Oklahoma City Thunder - Martell Webster SG 6'7'' 210 18 C+ A- C- C C- B
Martell Webster SF 18 6'7'' 210 C+ A- C- C C- B
Webster was traded to the Pistons in a deal with the Thunder. Webster did not take any hits in TC. He has pretty solid scoring ratings and may develop into a nice role player off the bench. Solid pick here, well see what he does. Grade: B
28.Minnesota Timberwolves - Jarrett Jack PG 6'3'' 202 21 C B- B- C+ D+ B
Jarrett Jack PG 21 6'3'' 202 C B- B- C+ D+ B
Jack does not do anything in TC though he stays the same. It is a nice pick up for a championship contending team that could use a back up point guard. Maybe Jarrett can become that. Grade: B
29.Miami Heat - Francisco Garcia SF 6'7'' 195 23 C+ B C- B- C B
Francisco Garcia SF 23 6'7'' 195 C+ B C- B C B
Heat finish out the first round and pick Francisco Garcia. This kid goes up in defense and for the last pick in the draft he actually looks pretty solid. I like his ratings; he could become a really nice role player in this league and maybe more. Good pick. Grade: B+
Before:
1. New Jersey Nets - Chris Paul PG 6'0'' 175 20 B+ C B+ C+ D+ A
After:
Chris Paul PG 20 6'0'' 175 A- B- A C+ D+ A
