Andrew Bynum
C
7’0 285
St Joseph HS (NJ)
17 years old
Draft Ratings: C+ D+ D+ C+ B- A
Strengths: Andrew Bynum is one of the finest young big men to emerge from the prep basketball scene and could be the first 17 year old to ever be drafted in the BBS. After transferring from West Windsor Plainsboro High School North, Bynum became a McDonald’s High School All-American at St Joseph High School where tallied 22.4 points, 16.8 rebounds and 5.3 blocks per game. The qualities in Bynum’s game are quite obvious as he is much stronger and powerful than bigs at the high school level although that will change in the BBS. Bynum has also has soft hands and a knack for going up and getting balls with his very long wingspan. He is known to throw down dunks and alley oops with authority and very underrated when it comes to his foot speed. Bynum is one of the most athletic seven footers to ever enter into the draft as he is able to get up and down the floor similar to 2003 top 3 pick, Chris Kaman. Scouts also expect Bynum to be eventually spawn into a double digit rebounder in at his peak while also terrorizing opponents with his long arms and shotblocking ability.
Weaknesses: Bynum is what many scouts would consider injury prone. He has been unable to stay healthy even at his young age and some teams worry about his durability issues. Although his game is fluid, his offense is very much underdeveloped especially with his back to the basket but can be improved with the proper focus. Bynum is a decent foul shooter but can also show some gains in that category as well. At times, Bynum may get lazy and force to many plays which will lead him to getting too many fouls and sitting on the bench for most of the game. As far as court vision and playmaking, Bynum is below average in both of those facets of the game.
Outlook: Bynum will challenge for a spot in the top 3 of the draft, no matter if he chooses to go to UConn or go straight to the BBS hardwood in 2005. Most signs point to Bynum declaring because he will only be 17-years old if he enters which will make him a luxury to any team picking in the top 3 of the draft.
