Jameer Nelson
PG
6'0 190
Saint Joseph's
22 years old
Draft Ratings: C B B- B- C- B
Profile
Strengths: Born and bred Pennsylvania baller Jameer Nelson is fresh off leading the Saint Joseph's Eagles to an undefeated 27-0 regular season record and an Elite Eight appearance. Nelson is one of the finest point guards to emerge from college basketball since possibly Jason Williams in the 2002 BBS Draft. His leadership ability is considered tremendous around basketball people and has a high basketball IQ according to several scouts. Perhaps the best part of Nelson's game is that he knows how to win and what it takes to run a team. Nelson has a great stroke from the perimeter and is not afraid to take the last shot of the game. He is also an above average ball handler and is learning more and more how to find his teammates scoring opportunities. Nelson is a superior high percentage shooter from the field and beyond the arc. He also finds his way to the charity strike with a strong penetrating game and can certainly hit free throws at more than 80% clip.
Weaknesses: Nelson will probably never be an elite point guard simply because he lacks the ball handling and quickness needed to excel at the BBS level. Because he lacks some foot speed, Nelson won't be a strong defender although he gets his steals through savvy play. Due to his stature limitations, Nelson will be a decent rebounder for his height but will not wow you with his ability to crash the boards. His six foot frame makes him a defensive liability against bigger, stronger and faster point guards but he should be able to develop some perimeter defense with time. Turnovers could be an issue early on for Nelson but should be corrected as he seasons his game.
Outlook: Nelson will be a lottery pick and should fill a void at point guard for a team picking within slots No. 8-13. He may never be a superstar but Nelson should be a BBS starter for a team for a long time or at best be a very good backup.
