All-Undervalued BBS Team as of 2001
1st Team
C- Terry Mills (POR) C 33 6'10'' 237 B C C- B- B+ D
2001 Salary: $9,000,000
2001 Stats: 13 ppg, 11.1 rpg, 2.2 apg,
Justification: Mills has been one of the most, if not, the most productive big man that no one has ever valued since the league began in the 1990 season. Mills has consistently posted double digit numbers in points, rebounds and is balanced in the rest of his game. Yet, he has played for six teams in 12 seasons with the Clippers being his longest stint. Most recently, the Blazers have been able to insure Mills’ services first as a Mid level exception player and now on a reasonable 2 year deal.
PF- Leon Smith (BOS) PF 20 6'10'' 235 B D+ D B B C
2001 Salary: $600,000
2001 Stats: 11.5 ppg, 10.1 rpg, 1.5 apg, 3.5 bpg
Justification: Smith might be the most overlooked 2nd rounder to this point in BBS. After being selected as the ninth pick in the second round of the draft, Celtics GM Jeff has developed Smith into a promising young big in this league. Even though Smith has been maxed out in RCs, he is still only 20 years old and has had his best season in his contract year. Surely, Smith will be a hot commodity on the FA market and will probably get max money from some team with cap space.
SF- Andrei Fetisov (UTA) SF 29 6'10'' 226 A- C+ C B- B D
2001 Salary: $7,348,708
2001 Stats: 20.4 ppg, 8 rpg, 2.3 apg, 1.3 spg, 50% FG, 78% FT, 40% 3PT
Justification: At 29, Fetisov is capping off his best statistical season since coming into the league. To top it off, Fetisov shoots outstanding percentages for a player at his stature and rebounds very well. He may be the best inside scoring small forward in the league and has undoubtedly been valuable to the Jazz's success this season.
SG- Larry Hughes (HOU) SG 22 6'5'' 185 B+ C+ C+ A C+ B
2001 Salary: $3,115,963 (Rookie Contract)
2001 Stats: 16.1 ppg, 7.8 rpg, 3.4 apg, 3.1 spg, 46% FG, 87% FT
Justification: Hughes is another FA to be that was on the last year of his rookie deal. Hughes led the league in steals and is simply one of the most underrated SGs in the league. He scores consistently and rebounds better than most SFs as well. He has a decent assists to turnover ratio and shoots good percentages. Hughes may be another candidate to get a lot of money this off-season.
PG- Randy Livingston (NJ) PG 26 6'4'' 209 B B- B+ B C- B
2001 Salary: $4,500,000
2001 Stats: 17.3 ppg, 4.7 rpg, 9.2 apg, 1.6 spg, 45% FG, 80% FT
Justification: Next to Smith, Livingston is the second player to make the 1st Team All-Undervalued team. The Warriors took Livingston in the second round of the 1996 draft only to see him blossom in Denver’s offense a mere four seasons later. This season, Livingston led the Nets to a playoff berth and helped shut the door on the Wizards playoff hopes this season.
1st Team Total Salary: $24,564,671
2nd Team
C/F Vitaly Potapenko (PHI) 26 6'10'' 283 B+ C- D- C B D
2001 Salary: $4,500,000
2001 Stats: 20.7 ppg, 9.8 rpg, 1.4 apg, 49% FG, 78% FT
Justification: It is the middle of the 2000 season and the Philadelphia 76ers have had a rough start to their CY season. They lack depth and game breaking talent forcing them look to the FA wire to find help. After the Magic and Celtics let go of Potapenko, the Pacers nearly picked him up before the Sixers grabbed him to fill out the roster. GM Maniac found a gem and would not let him go as Potapenko became one of the best post players in his 23 games played that season. This year, the Sixers locked him up to a nice 3 year deal and eliminated any poaching for his services.
PF- Maurice Taylor (OKC) 25 6'9'' 264 A- C D+ C+ C C
2001 Salary: $4,500,000
2001 Stats: 20.6 ppg, 7.6 rpg, 1 bpg, 47% FG, 85% FT
Justification: Taylor is another player that does a lot of damage with his low post moves and strength inside. After being snubbed by Atlanta despite registering 17 ppg in his rookie season, Taylor reemerged with the Blazers this past season as a MLE pickup and was later traded to the Thunder where he finished a 20 ppg campaign. Overall, Taylor is by no means a star but certainly is effective as a backup and a solid starter if needed.
SF- Shareef Abdur Rahim (CHA) 24 6'9'' 232 A- C C- C+ B+ B
2001 Salary: $3,302,625 (Rookie Contract)
2001 Stats: 28.9 min, 18.9 ppg, 6.8 rpg, 2 apg, 47% FG, 82% FT
Justification: Under the tutelage of Lakers GM styro, Abdur-Rahim was groomed to be a strong small forward with a great back to the basket game. His rebounding also became very good and a move from power forward to small forward only helped his game. Now as a Bobcat, Reef seems a lock to be reupped at the reasonable price he’s asking for. The Bobcats should be satisfied with Abdur-Rahim’s production for the next 3-4 seasons at least.
SG- Cuttino Mobley (ATL) 26 6'4'' 190 C A+ B B+ C B
2001 Salary: $2,816,584
2001 Stats: 16.3 ppg, 5.6 rpg, 5.3 apg, 1.6 spg, 48% FG, 92% FT, 42% 3PT
Justification: Like Abdur-Rahim, Mobley will likely get the extensions he’s offering and the Hawks will keep a truly effective player who still has room to grow. Mobley’s game is much more than a shooter as he boards, distributes the ball well and plays strong defense. Mobley could definitely be a great starter for any team that’s looking for a 2-guard.
PG – Anthony Peeler (ORL) 31 6'4'' 221 C+ A C+ A- D+ C
2001 Salary: $8,391,240
2001 Stats: 20.4 ppg, 4.1 rpg, 7.7 apg, 1.8 spg, 49% FG, 95% FT, 47% 3PT
Justification: Peeler is a converted SG to PG but it doesn’t matter because Peeler is effective at the 1, 2 or 3 position. He shoots better percentages than most PGs on teams and distributes the ball decently. He is a below average rebounder and is solid defensively. Definitely, Peeler is a guy that always goes unnoticed but gets the job done.
2nd Team Total Salary: $23,510,449
