Caron Butler
SF
6'7 228
22 years old
UConn
Draft Ratings: B B C C+ C+ B
Profile[/u]
Strengths: Following a line of great wing players coming out of the University of Connecticut such as Ray Alllen and Richard Hamilton, UConn forward Caron Butler has now put his name in the draft after two stellar seasons for the Huskies. This Wisconsin native has an enticing balanced scoring game as he is able to pull up for a mid-range jumper or slash to the basket for an above the rim finish. Butler is also an above average rebounder for his position and height as he will able to compete for those 50-50 balls during a game. He also has a developing outside stroke and is very effficient at the charity strike. Butler does not slouch on the defensive end as he is expected to be one of the better wing defenders in the league as he progresses his positional defense. Right now, Butler will get his hands on a lot of balls and get a lot of steals because of that. Scouts are curious though where Butler will rank among UConn products Allen and Hamilton since both are already bonafied superstars in the league already.
Weakenesses: Although very proficient at the free throw line, Butler does not have accuracy behind the arc and that part of his game may not get better unless he improves significantly in that area. Butler is expected to be a gifted scorer on the next level but shoots a high clip and does not translate into a high field goal percentage a majority of the time. He also is not very good at creating his own shot or his teammates but scouts expect Butler can develop that part of his game easily. The biggest question about Butler is if he can lead a team as number one option or if he's strictly a third or fourth scorer on a club.
Outlook: Butler could be a top five pick if he declares for the 2002 BBS draft. Many draft experts believe Butler could be better off entering this year's draft than waiting till next season where many other touted prospects could be entering. His potential seems to be high yet not through the roof which keeps him out of the top 3 discussion.
