Joe Johnson
SG
6'7 240
20 years old
Arkansas
Draft Ratings: B- B C+ C C A
Profile
Strengths: As one of the finest ballers Little Rock, Arkansas has ever seen, Joe Johnson is testing the draft waters two spectacular seasons with the Razorbacks. In his first season, Johnson became the first freshman to lead the Razorbacks in scoring and rebounding. He may enter the draft as one of the most highly touted underclassmen in this year's class. Johnson's balanced scoring game makes him a legitimate threat every time he has the ball in his hands. His jumpshot has nearly flawless mechanics and almost makes it look easy as he drains three pointers from 25 feet and beyond. His size and strength also make him devastating when driving in the lane and will make his opponents pay if they elect to send him to the line. He also has the ability to finish aggressively around the basket and on a fast break. Also, he is a major team player and does not have a big ego like many other franchise-type players. In addition, expect him to log big minutes for your club as he has great motor and is very well conditioned. Johnson is a very good play maker and could even play some spot point guard minutes if needed. Overall, Johnson is a very special player and a dynamo as the focal point of a BBS team's offense.
Weaknesses: Johnson may never be in the top 10 statistically in steals, blocks or even fouls for that matter. He really does not exert himself defensively as well as he should especially considering his athleticism. Many question if he has the ability to be a franchise player and take the final shot at the end of the game. Depending on his development, GMs may have to differentiate whether Johnson is a player you can build around or just a very good second or third star on the team.
Outlook: Johnson is a lock to go in the top 3 in the draft, no matter if he stays in his year's 2001 draft or if he spends another year at Arkansas. His game is so refined and developed already that it is tough to pass on a talent like this especially since he is so versatile offensively and defensively.
