BBS GM of the Year Award Nominees
The BBS GM of the Year award goes to the team owner that exemplifies the best managing and direction of a team during the regular season. While a number of GMs deserve consideration, only one GM can stand out from the others and win this award. This can mostly be derived from his team’s performance, moves during the season, drafting ability and overall ability to succeed in this league.
Without further ado, here are the candidates for the 1996 BBS GM of the Year award. In order for a GM to win, he must receive the most votes by the time the BBS Finals have been completed. If there is another GM that deserves consideration, please vote in the other (write in vote) and indicate your pick in your post (serious votes only). Also, keep in mind the order of these nominees are not in any particular order. In the event of a tie, both GMs will be named Co-GMs of the year. Happy Voting!
OFFICIAL NOMINEES:[/u]
Mark
Resume:
W/L record: 68-14
Reg. Season finish: 1st Place Western Conference, Pacific Division
Outlook:
Mark guided the Suns to one of the best seasons in BBS history. His mark at home was extraordinary as Phoenix only conceded to five losses all season long. The key to Mark's success has been the longevity of his players' production and overall health of club this season. Also, off-season pickup Dana Barros has been a dynamo shooter off the bench and deserves some credit for this underrated roster move.
Tiger
Resume:
W/L record: 63-19
Reg. Season finish: 1st Place Eastern Conference, Central Division
Outlook:
Tiger defeated his contract year threat with no problem after reaching 42 wins and the top of the East conference nearly after the All-Star break. Tiger has been fortunate to land two franchise type pieces in Jason Kidd and Tim Duncan and surround him with formidable veteran presence in Dennis Rodman, Karl Malone, Charles Oakley, Bobby Phills, Arvydas Sabonis and Jimmy Jackson. To much of his credit, the Cavaliers allowed the last amount of points the entire season. Now as a favorite for the BBS Finals, Tiger must also be favored for this prestigious title.
Manas
Resume:
W/L record: 56-26
Reg. Season finish: 4th Place Eastern Conference, 2nd place Atlantic Division
Outlook:
Like the Cavs, Manas was riding high on the heels of winning the lottery and taking Steve Nash No. 1 overall. The Heat now have two Rookie of the Years in a row in Kevin Garnett and Nash. But Manas didn't stop there. He picked up veterans super scorers Mitch Richmond, Dan Majerle and big man Stanley Roberts which helped the Heat become a top-5 scoring offense this season. Following a similar formula of the Cavs, Manas does not have quite the depth of the Cavs but certainly has a younger core and more cap flexibility in the future.
Jeff
Resume:
W/L record: 54-28
Reg. Season finish: 5th Place Eastern Conference, 3rd Place Atlantic Division
Outlook:
In an ultra competitive Eastern Conference, Jeff was able to retain his talent and bring in a valuable piece that was integral to the C's success this year. A trade for guard Kendall Gill really put the Celtics a hard matchup every night as he became one of BBS top scorers, something Boston had needed since narrowly missing the playoffs last season. Although falling to the Heat in the playoffs, the Celtics have a nice nucleus in Robert Horry, Gill, Antonio McDyess and other pieces in order to get even better.
DJ
W/L record: 52-30
Reg. Season finish: 7th Place Eastern Conference, 4th Place Central Division
Outlook:
Once again DJ carried this team to a 50 plus win season and a first round upset of the Sixers by defying all odds. After losing Dell Curry to free agency, the Raptors managed with Bobby Hurley posting career numbers and by newly acquired Isaiah Rider carrying the scoring load. DJ also retained underrated small forward Chuck Person and brought in another tweener in Clarence Weatherspoon who has been sensational off the bench for the Raptors. One of the BBS' best Canadian GMs deserves some more notoriety again this year.
Styro
W/L record: 44-38
Reg. Season finish: 6th Place Western Conference, 3rd place Pacific Division
Outlook:
Since taking over for the departed Nanz, new Lakers GM styro has restored the respectability for this club. He began by drafting Shareef-Abdur Rahim and keeping his core of Allan Houston, Michael Finley, Shawn Bradley and Theo Ratliff. Then, he traded for a cornerstone player in Charles Barkley who filled in the void at small forward very nicely and later for superstar point guard John Starks, who posted the most assists ever in his career. A very nicely job done by Styro in only his first full season under his belt in this BBS.
