1) Boston Celtics select Michael Cooper SG 6'5'' 170 21 C+ C+ C+ B C+ A
Ok... I'm sold.
Once Spencer gave a shout out to Cooper's blocking, he won me over as the top pick in this year's draft.
He's well-rounded across the board and DBW will put the work in to make sure that Cooper is great (should he get the pick, of course)
If he moves to SF, I imagine that his ratings will eventually be B A- B- A B C if his potential is really high. That would make him a similar player to M.L. Carr.
2) The Indiana Pacers select Bernard King SF 6'7'' 205 20 A- C D+ C C A
How could the Pacers turn down a potential 60 ppg output from King and English? They'd have one of the most dynamic scoring backcourts in the league and they'd only get better.
If they keep their frontcourt thin, they can get some more high picks and build a really solid team.
If Cooper goes 1st, then King or Sikma are really the only two guys worth taking here.
3) The Phoenix Suns select Jack Sikma C 6'11'' 230 22 C+ B D+ B B+ A
Sikma is strong as an ox and can do just about everything except for rack up blocks.
That said, there have been very few centers with an outside game that have been effective in the league, but I think he'll be part of the group that succeeds rather than fails.
He's a very intriguing prospect at a luxury position and I don't see him slipping beyond the third pick.
4) The Washington Wizards select Terry Tyler PF 6'7'' 215 21 B- C D+ A C+ B
This is the first of several surprises in the draft that I will ruin with this mock draft.
He has gotten a glowing review from some questions that were asked and looks to be a keeper.
If he can increase his rebounding and inside scoring, he'll be a huge force and the Wizards can use a frontcourt compliment to Barnes.
5) Cleveland Cavaliers select Mike Glenn PG 6'2'' 175 22 C+ A- C C D B
The second major surprise on the board.
Point guard is a position where the Cavs are weak and Marty is the type of GM who will take a risk.
Many GMs that are salivating over Glenn's notes and question responses will be infuriated that I'm putting Glenn here, but Marty will snap him up.
Another very viable option here is for Marty to trade the pick for someone else who is in love with Glenn and is willing to overpay.
From the looks of his notes, Glenn could be the next Rickey Francis and in what is considered a weak draft, that is tough to pass up.
Huge risk/reward pick.
6) The Dallas Mavericks select Kent Benson C 6'10'' 235 22 B- C- D+ B- B- A
The Mavs select the best big man available and hope that he hits in order to provide Moses Malone with a strong compliment.
Benson looks well-rounded and like he has some upside.
He also is a guy that they don't need to see excel immediately and can develop over time.
If he ends up being B+ C D+ A- B+ C, the Mavs will be thrilled.
7) The San Antonio Spurs select Marques Johnson SF 6'7'' 218 21 B+ C+ C B- C A
With MRR and Campy already poised to be huge stars, the Spurs need someone who will be a solid compliment and isn't a liability in any area. Johnson fits that description to a tee.
Johnson's notes make him look like Michael Cooper lite - a player who can do everything well and provide in every category.
Seems like a "can't miss" prospect and that's what the Spurs must covet. With MRR and Campy, the margin of error for drafting a complimentary player is very slim.
8) The Atlanta Hawks select Norm Nixon PG 6'2'' 170 22 C+ C+ B B+ D A
The Hawks need a big man or a point guard and are thrilled that Nixon falls into their lap here.
Given Jay's history of drafting Norm Van Lier, he goes with another Norm and hopes that he doesn't miss out on Bingo Smith like the last time.
Nixon looks to be a very safe pick at point guard and as long as his outside shooting improves in TC, he can start right away.
9) The Houston Rockets select Wayne Cooper C 6'10'' 220 20 C+ C- D+ A- B B
Never hurts landing a player compared to Elmore Smith with the eighth pick and Cooper does so by landing Cooper.
Cooper looks like the best defensive big man in the draft besides Tyler and that's tough for a well-rounded team to pass up.
Cooper and Caldwell will be a dynamic pairing up front defensively - although the scoring output would be putrid. Still, Cooper is the right pick here.
10) The New York Knicks select T.R. Dunn SG 6'4'' 192 22 B C C A- C+ A (via Hornets)
The Knicks will take the best player with "A" potential left on the board and that looks to be Dunn.
Dunn certainly looks like the safest pick here, but also looks like a player who could have solid upside and be a top notch defensive player.
Skillz will put in the work to make Dunn a B+ C+ C A C+ C player as a rookie. That's tough to top this late in a draft.
11) Phoenix Suns select Otis Birdsong SG 6'3'' 190 21 B+ B C C D+ A (via Memphis)
The Suns traded Mike Gale for this pick and replace him with another potentially dynamic scorer.
Birdsong looks like another player with solid upside who can score in a variety of ways.
Personally, I'm not very high on this player and I wouldn't be surprised if he slips out of the lotto.
12) The San Antonio Spurs select Cedric Maxwell SF 6'8'' 205 21 B+ C C- B- C+ A (via 76ers)
If Marques Johnson doesn't work out, maybe Cedric Maxwell will!
Additionally, the Spurs can run Maxwell at power forward if both of them end up being good.
They have similar ratings and the Spurs likely want to start competing soon, so passing on Maxwell this late wouldn't be wise.
13) Washington Wizards select Walter Davis SG 6'6'' 193 23 B B C+ C+ D+ A (via Detroit)
The Wizards could use some scoring on the wings and Davis provides that immediately.
While his rebounding will never be great, if you can get an Austin Carr or Cazzie Russell-type player this late in a draft, it's never a bad thing.
Seems like the obvious choice here.
