1. What's the progress report in Houston? Why keep Dr. J, Dampier, and Maravich and the expense of a full tank job with younger or more fitting assets?
I had planned to tank these 2 or 3 upcoming seasons since about 2040. The West was horrible and no one would give me anything close to players like Ho Walker were worth so I decided to keep winning. This ended up being a bad idea since a lot of teams in the West decided to start trying to win. My plan of completely tanking kind of went out the window when I got Dr J and Maravich. I didn't care if I competed this season, but I wasn't planning on being this bad. Dampier got hurt twice and I have no real backup. I also didn't realize I got switched into a computer dc for a sim or two because of Dampiers injury. This is when I lost about 12 or 14 in a row. As a result, I didn't think making a run for the 7 or 8 seed was a smart move and it would be better to see what I have in Adams, Meriweather, and Winters. Since I still have my next two firsts, I wouldn't rule out any trade, but I think I can put together a good team next year.
2. Last year I thought Dr. J quieted the doubters for good. But this year the percentages and volume are down, and the turnovers up. Is your DC to blame, or is Dr. J nothing special?
I will admit I expected more out of Dr J. I still have high expectations and plan on giving him +15 soon. I think the auto DC hurt him a lot. He was only shooting 43% on the season after those sims, but he should have recovered more by now. My dc may be hurting him as well since I'm trying to see what would be best for next year. I do think he would be a lot better at SG though
3. Who are the best players at each position?
C Kareem Abdul-Jabbar
PF Bingo Smith
SF Dan Issel
SG Rick Barry
PG John Mengelt
4. Rank these pieces: Moses Malone, Bob Lanier, Bill Walton, Derrek Dickey.
1. Bill Walton
2. Bob Lanier
3. Moses Malone
4. Derrek Dickey
This turned out to be two groups of two for me. I think Walton and Lanier are definitely more valuable than Malone and Dickey. I had trouble picking one over the other in those two respective groups. I really don’t like putting Walton at #1, but his age was too much to pass up for me. Lanier will soon be 29, which means he is probably going to lose a lot of value to half the GMs in the league. If you want to win, Lanier is the way to go. If you want value, Walton edges him out.
I still have a lot of hope for Moses. I also think Dickey has become a bit overrated. He is an incredible defender, but he has never been that impressive on offense. Since he spent his first three years (and now really a fourth) on an uncompetitive Bulls team, I’m doubt whether or not he is a complete player. Malone isn’t one either, but I think he will still end up a 2bpg guy.
5. Will either of the CY teams survive?
I’m not sure what Play is doing. He has the talent to survive. He could easily make a trade to make his team a lot better. Maybe he is busy.
Dewayne, like many less experienced GMs before him, is sitting on some undeveloped youth when he can’t afford to. Daryl Dawkins is a nice player, but he is not worth holding onto in the situation he is now in.
I think Play makes it and Dewayne does not.
6. You're the Philly GM. Classy and impressive Thunder GM Aaron Haberman aka thekidhabes5000 offers you John Mengelt for Foots Walker and George Gervin. What's the call?
I probably would. I like Mengelt a lot. Foots is nothing special by any means. Gervin may have potential to be great, but I don't see it happening. He is a lot more replaceable than Mengelt would be.
7. Better GM: Play or Repole?
This is a tough call... Even though Repole has been lucky, he has won with three different cores. He also has to be the favorite to win the next two titles. I think if he does that you would have a hard time saying he isn’t the best. However, at this point in time, I would still go with play. Even if he would somehow happen to be as big of fbb geek as repole, he doesn’t make himself out to be and I like that.
8. Who are your favorite and least favorite GMs in the league? Can be guys to socialize with, trade with, or whatever else you have in mind.I really don’t have any particular favorites. I also don’t chat with people on bbs nearly as much as I used to. I like most of the guys I’ve been in the league with for a long time so you Nanz Marty Aar Play. I rarely talk to Play anyone more though. Of the newer guys, I like broph the best.
Talking trade with DJ, jah, and greg sucks, but that has been the case for about 5 years (or 10 with dj) so I can’t really complain...
Least favorite gms would probably be dewayne styro and jay. I don’t have a problem with any of them. They just tend to post things that annoy me more than others.
9. Remember when Hype thought you were still the Bucks GM? Awk.
LOL. When was this? I will admit that I was running on a hour of sleep one day during finals week and later in the day I clicked on the Bucks roster thinking it was mine. I couldn’t figure out where my players went.
10. Rank these GMs: You, Nanz, Styro, Martinez, CC, Aar.
1. Aar
2. Nanz
3. Jordan
4. Martinez
5. CC
6. Styro
Aar is easily the top guy. He is the best over the longhaul. I think Nanz and I can give him a run when we are as active as we can be, but we aren’t always that. Marty has crept up to where he is close to myself and nanz imo. CC tanks way too often for me to think he is anywhere near good, but he is better than styro. Styro has put together some great teams but that only counts for so much.
11. One BBS memory you think might surprise some of the newer guys.
As great of GMs Play and Repole have become, they have had the advantage of fbb being around for a long time and owning the game. I doubt anyone newer has heard of Reilly or even knows who he is, but he was so dominant in what I think was the second version of bbs he ended it. Once we went retro, he continued to win championships for awhile acquiring every 1st round pick in the Michael Jordan draft. He wasn’t as competitive in the years leading up to that, but in Jordan’s second year he began unbeatable with Jordan, Hakeem, Barkley, and Stockton. While rules prevent from anything like this being possible now, it shows you how far the league has come.
