In this Plenty in 20 feature, we talk to polarizing 76ers GM dewaynec and get his take on his early tenure in the league
1) How sure are you that you'll make the playoffs or win 42. Give me a percentage?
For me right now, although I'm behind on the ball with my DC I think I'll find the right DC to push me into the playoffs with my current squad. I accidentally had a Outside focus last sim, without noticing but as far as my team stands I'm about 85% sure we'll make it because I feel like we can beat out the Knicks for the 8th seed, and with everyone else in the east rebuilding I feel like we should make the playoffs.
2) What do you dislike most about BBS?
I haven't really experienced much to dislike, but if I had to choose it'd be the difficulty of making a trade seem even. Most people either overvalue their players or undervalue yours to get a step in the trade discussions. It's not too big of a problem because I've still been able to manage what I wanted to though, it just wasn't easy because being new everyone is still trying to feel me out seeing what they can get out of it, but for the most part I think I've done a pretty good job weaving through all of that. If I had to say something else it'd probably be distinguishing value, I have a grasp of it, but it still isn't to the point where I can say I'm comfortable with just pulling the trigger automatically on a deal.
3) Would you trade Gervin and Dawkins as a package for Bingo Smith?
Interesting question, but my answer would be no. Here's why, what I get out of Dawkins and Gervin can be matched with Bingo but I'd rather have the production at both positions rather than to have it all in one, because in any given game Dawkins and Gervin can go off, not to mention adding Dawkins to an already potent Gervin just wouldn't seem right for my current situation. Though I could understand someone doing that.
4) Who is the worst GM in BBS from your experience?
Well this probably wont come as a shocker, but for the most part you have been pretty much a thorn in my back for a while now although I would just chalk it up as a veteran GM here just trying to get under my skin. For the most part though it doesn't bother me because I stil have something to prove. I have to prove I can compete with the other GMs here before I can call people out for what they say to me. Most other GMs that I have spoken to so far I can talk strategies with, so I can say I've had it pretty eazy with the hazing from most GMs.
5) If you could have any player in your division not named Bingo, including someone on your team, who would it be?
I could take the easy way out here and say someone from my team, but that'd be too easy. For me it'd be a toss up between Kermit Washington and Marvin Barnes, because they both give alot out of their positions. I'd find myself leaning towards Kermit though because, he gives you everything you want out of a big man. He's efficient, gets you 2 blocks and a steal, and he rebounds at a solid clip. I think he's the most polished big man in the division. Although you'd probably like him to put up more shot attempts.
6) Who is the biggest idiot in BBS and why?
Lets see, I haven't really had any encounters from the "idiots" of the league but I'm sure their out there. I honestly cannot come up with someone off the top of my head, so I'll just plead the fifth.
7) If you avoid your CY, what's next for the 76ers?
If I am to avoid my CY, my object is to have my team compete at a high level for a few years, probably make some tweaks to the roster to make adjustments where I see fit, but for the most part keep my main core around for a little longer before I forced to disband them on account of their contract situations. I'm pretty sure most people would do the same, no reason to tear down and start over.
8) Did you feel bad displacing duke?
I'm sure Duke probably would have been a decent GM here, but honestly I dont, I feel like I built this team to be what it is now and if I were just to be ousted because my internet went out, it would have sucked for me, and I would have never got to see if I had a chance or not, so I look at it moreso from my perspective than his. Hopefully he gets a team to buil of his own soon.
9) Who has a better team, you or the Grizzlies?
For me, I think it's my team, based solely off performance my team wins in most of the key stats. His team on paper probably looks better, but I think he's finding a hard time to get his talent to mesh well. The team certainly looks like it's better than 12-19 on paper though.
10) Which GM has been most friendly to you since your arrival?
Play, it's quite ironic that we are both in the CY at the same time, but he stuck his hand out and offered me advice pretty much the whole time I've been here. I'll say it's good when someone who's had his success here, give me advice on my team and I'm pretty sure that will probably remain the guy I most frequently ask questions. Another guy is Greeme, who has been one of the easiest GMs here to make a deal with.
11) Describe your ideal point guard and which current BBS point guard matches them most?
My Ideal point guard would have to have a balance of defense and offense, not too much of a turnover whore, can pull down a decent amount of rebounds, and overall they have to have good percentages across the board. I dont like one dimensional point guards. I also like it when they can score without having to be an option, that's the most key part of it. I dont like point guard who are one of your top 3 options. Frazier would be an ideal guy, sub 2 turnovers, 2 plus spg, 3 teammates who are options ahead of him, and scores and dishes the rock at a nice clip based off performance and nothing else he'd be an ideal pg for me. Anyone in that mold would be nice.
12) Spurs or Thunder? Who wins in the NBA Playoffs?
I want to say the Thunder, but I dont think anyone can beat the Spurs the way they are playing, they have one of the best coaches all time, and their core group of players are so consistently great, it's going to be a tough series for the Thunder. They are out matched at some of their key positions, with Parker nullifying Westbrook, and Manu nullifying Harden. The series really depends if Durant can up his play to the "he can't be stopped" level, because he does tend to struggle sometimes to get into a rhythm.
13) Who would you take 1st overall in this Year's draft?
Honestly I think the draft this year is pretty meh in general, but if I had to choose a number 1 overall pick it'd either be Benson, Johnson, Mcadoo, Maxwell, or Sikma. Me personally I'd go with Maxwell due to the fact he gives you basically what Mcadoo gives you except he does more than one thing well to start off. Johnson also is a pretty viable option, but I dont think he'll have the better career out of the 3 SFs. The two Centers just aren't they great for me to take them #1 overall though, all risky picks though.
14) If you could have any player from the Jazz for free, who would it be?
Roberson, I dont think I'd rather have anyone other than him even if it were for free, he's a solid big man in this league. Another solid option would be Snyder, I think he may be playing out of position right now, but if I had to choose it'd be either one of them.
15) If you end up with the 8th seed, can your team beat the Magic? After all, you are responsible for their only BBS loss this season.
I think my team would stand a chance, but it'd be almost foolish of me to say we would win, because I'm sure if he got a chance to dial in on my team, the Magic would probably overcome us in a 7 game series. Though I do think my team would put up a valiant effort against the Magic if it were to come down to that.
16) What was the last trade proposal that you made in this league?
I believe I made an offer for McGlockin a while ago before I disappeared, believe it had to do with Foots and 3 picks for him, though I couldn't get it done, I still think it was a fair offer, the GM just wasn't looking to go in that direction. Since then I haven't made an offer as of yet, but if I feel the need to make a move I will be on the search.
17) What has been your favorite article in BBS thus far?
Honestly I don't truly get to read articles here so, I judge most of the articles based on how much work the guy put into it, but for the ones I have read the most readable articles tend to be these Point/Counterpoint series, that have been popping up from you lately, so for this idea you get kudos.
18) Did you agree with where your players were ranked in the top-50 last season?
Last season I dont think I saw Foots on there at all although there was a pretty high demand for him in trades, in hindsight he probably should have been in there but for the most part, Dawkins and Gervin were ranked pretty fairly. I was surprised you valued Gervin so high considering around the league no one though he was that "special" of a player, but I think his stats speak for themselves.
19) What is the worst trade offer you've received?
I dont remember the offer exactly but it probably was the New York Knicks offer a few seasons ago for Gervin, at the time it made completely no sense for me to do that and every bit the sense for him to make the trade. I think he tried to swindle me with a few of his picks in that trade, but I knew better then not to mess around with his picks.
20) Will the Grizzlies make the playoffs or win 42?
With the way they are going right now, I dont think they'll win 42 or make the playoffs, I think they need to make a move to get players that play better together rather than players who are solid individually, personally I'd trade Bing for the best offer I could get for him.
1) How sure are you that you'll make the playoffs or win 42. Give me a percentage?
