Lets GET IT! PUT YOUR DIAMONDS UP FOR BIG BLUE!!!!! BLUE YOU MA BOY
1. Lets kick it off by going back a in time a little bit... Can you tell us how did you end up being CY'd with the 6ers? and how did it feel?
It was a combination of a lack of activity and some terrible decisions. I had a good 6-8 year run with Oscar where we regularly won between 45-55 games but I was complacent and didn’t make the necessary moves to surround Oscar with other great pieces. Had a been more active I’d like to think I would’ve done a little more. I really got myself into trouble when I decided against dealing Oscar for my picks back to repole. I believe his final offer was Oscar for Willie Somerset, Flynn Robinson, and my three firsts. I got caught up in how much I thought O was actually worth, and thought I wasn’t getting good value, but I should’ve just sucked it up and took the deal. After that I made a string of bad deals, a lot of them in haste. I remember regretting making those deals almost immediately after I made the trade; one of them was actually with you, Jim Davis and a 1st for Tart . But to conclude my demise, I was in my contract year with a meddling team, I think I would’ve made it a lot of years but the East was extremely deep at the time, I believe 10-11 teams had playoff caliber teams. I deserved to get the axe and now I’m trying to redeem myself.
2.This guy is on your squad putting up these numbers... Campy Russell SF 24 36.8 31.8 7.2 2.1 0.9 0.1 1.3 .454 .887 .365. Do you think he is underrated ? Have you been in trade talks for him or just asked about? can you gives us some insight where his value is right now?
I have not engaged in any trade talks including Campy. I’ve made it clear in my blocks that I’m not looking to move him at this time. I think most GM’s know how good he is. Aar had him at #12, I believe, in his trade value article, and I’d think almost any GM would agree that he’s at least top 20. The league is flooded with serviceable wings, which doesn’t help Campy’s value, but you’d be hard-pressed to find a wing that can provide the volume, defense, rebounding, and limited turnovers that Campy offers.
3. You are back with the Spurs and II believe this is your 2nd year rebuilding... can you tell us how you think this rebuild is going? Do you think you were bailed out by some lotto luck? and when do you plan on starting to win?
I don’t think I was bailed out, I still would’ve had Campy, LaRue, Lucas, and a lot of picks to work with. But it certainly was a fortunate situation and it makes my rebuild a lot easier. We’ll go into the offseason with potentially two lottery picks (San Antonio and Philly) and roughly 23-24 million in cap space. Maurice Lucas is a free agent, but hopefully we can lock him up before free agency begins. If he tests, we’ll still look into bringing him back. I’ll definitely be looking to find another wing to pair with Campy. I don’t think we’re that far away from competing for a playoff spot in the Western Conference as it is. With my cap space and trade assets (namely future firsts I received in trades I made), I should be able to acquire another wing, possibly another big man, and some quality depth. I expect to begin competing next year.
4. You picked Micheal Ray Richardson when you jumped in the lotto from 8 to 1!!! Why did you make that pick and how good do you think he can be? Is he a top 5 value player right NOW?
MRR was my top prospect and I needed a point guard pretty badly, so it was a perfect fit. The turnovers and jump shot are liabilities, but we’ve seen point guards make drastic improvements in those areas in the past. With some AC and freebie attention, he’ll be fine. It’s much harder to replicate the rebounding, steals, and blocks that he offers at the point guard position. I’d only consider trading him straight up for a handful of guys… Bobby Jones, Lanier, KAJ, Elvin, and Bingo. Moses and Kermit being pending free agents would keep me away from them. If he’s not top 5, he’s very close.
5. Who do you have your eyes on this year in the draft at the spot where you currently are? (11th)
I think Bernard or Marques Johnson would be the perfect complement to Campy, but I unless I start getting my tank on, those guys don’t seem like realistic targets. I think there will be a lot of value at #11. King/Cooper/Johnson/Sikma look like the top 4. After that, the draft could go a number of ways. I like Cedric Maxwell but I’m not sure if he makes it to #11. If I decide to go with a wing, Walter Davis could be a good value pick. If I end up going another direction, I wouldn’t be upset at all if I ended up with a guy like Terry Tyler or Wayne Cooper.
6. They say the top of this class can go a number of different ways (lol)... Who do you think are the top 3 picks and why.
Cooper, King, and Sikma, in that order. Cooper is very similar to MRR, but without the ability to play the point. He doesn’t play a premium position but his skill set is valued highly. He’d be most GMs’ first pick. I think Bernard goes second. The inside game and upside is a tantalizing combination. Third would be Sikma. Outside shooting bigs haven’t fared all that well in BBS but I think Sikma will be the exception. I think there will be a lot of intrigue surrounding him. Whoever ends up with Marques Johnson at #4 should be very happy; I don’t think he has the upside of King but he looks like a safe bet to be a really good career 2nd or 3rd option scorer.
7. Lets start going a little harder.Recently Marty gave you the 20 spot on his rankings list...ouch. Where do you think you rank? and why are you better than some of the GMs ranked ahead of you like Hype Game and Heatflash?
I haven’t done shit in a while so I can’t really argue with 20. GAME and HF have some momentum; those guys have had a decent amount of success, although nothing overwhelming, in recent seasons. From my recollection Hype has been a pretty solid GM but hasn’t ever had a long tenure in BBS, someone can correct me if I’m wrong. I don’t really know how to compare myself to him. Personally, I think I’m a better GM than GAME and HeatFlash, and a much better GM than my recent performance indicates , but the only way I can prove it is by winning. But I don’t need Marty or anybody’s validation to know I’m a good GM.
8. Tell who are your bottom 5 GMs right NOW! GO HARD BLUE! GO HARD #BK
Go hard, ok. I’m going to avoid including the new GM’s, that’s a cop out.
In no particular order:
Outlawz – Dude is top 2-3 when he’s on his game, but he does not seem involved one bit. Maybe once he starts acquiring talent from this most recent rebuild we will see more from him.
Andy – In contrast to Outlawz, Andy is an asset to the league. Very active, and has noted in a previous article, the .gif game is on point. Unfortunately he has not been able to get any type of momentum going in Detroit. He gets himself in the same situation I found myself in Philly. Due to a lack of assets, he’s forced to trade futures for older talent in order to get past his CY. Luck hasn’t been on his side in the draft, but repeated cycle of mediocrity has to put him in the bottom 5.
Kobe – Wasn’t very good in Boston and was absolutely horrible with PM’s. His recent strategy for his team doesn’t do much to change my opinion on his GMing. Beard for his first, which appears to be at best for Skillz a late lotto, was decent value, but he absolutely jumped the gun to compete. He was in just the second year of his rebuild with two young centerpieces in Andre McCarter and Robert Parish. Why not be patient, add another lottery pick, and use your cap to steal a player – albeit maybe not a star, but someone useful (maybe a big time rebounder?). He still would have been able to potentially move that lottery pick for a vet. Robert Parish’s value isn’t going to diminish, in fact he probably could have a gotten a better player than Cowens in a Parish deal. He could’ve made those same deals in the offseason and would’ve had a better opportunity to improve some major deficiencies of his team.
Greg – Poster child (or grown man) for complacency. I like having him around because he’s a BBS old-timer and he seems like a great guy, but I don’t think much of his GMing. He’s had chances in the past to build some special teams but each time has squandered the opportunity. I also find it pretty difficult to trade with him.
Biggie – Pretty similar to Andy, but not married to the .gif game. Maybe he finally has something with Alex English though?
9. If you could FIRE one GM RIGHT NOW.... who would it be and why? Could even be someone who just annoys the shit out off you but is a good GM. #BKGOHARD
I’m going to give Outlawz and the new GM’s a chance. It’s time to shit on DJ. Good GM but his GMing style is brutal. Difficult to negotiate with. He doesn’t offer much to the league, and seems to get a pass from Spencer in regards to his league activity. We could do without him.
10. This has been an ongoing debate for a while and we want to hear your thoughts! Repole or Play? Who is the best GM in BBS right NOW.
Repole’s riding the Bingo train and I can’t blame him. He does a great job identifying the type of players he wants to put around his superstar. He’s won championship pre-Bingo has well. The Willie Davis-shooting guard experiment (or revelation) was kind of corny from an outsider’s perspective but many attempted and failed to emulate it. You can’t argue with repole’s results. Play had a streak of 20 straight playoff appearances that included three rings… pretty impressive. His ability to retool his roster, all while rarely mortgaging any part of his future, including picks, sets him apart from everybody. His teams are usually loaded with valuable commodities. I think the Bingo factor is often used too harshly against repole, but I still think play34basketball is the best GM in the league.
11. Lets say you are in BK going hard and want to go out after your Spurs get gang banged by the Nets. You need some PUSS bad and want to have a good time but you can only bring 1 GM with you... is it Pig or HabesDAkiD! GO !
Both are two of my favorite GM’s so you’re making me feel like an asshole, but I’ll go with the boy Habeus Corpus. I think his wingman-ship gives me the better chance in acquiring the puss. Also, I can’t tolerate a night full of bad beat stories when I’m drinking.
12. After getting almost raped by going out the night before (previous question) you are out and about drinking HARD. You see a GM at the bar but with a few drinks already down, you are a little angry lol. This guy has always pissed you off and you say, why the fuck not, so you go up to and knock him OUT ....and piss all over him before leaving. WHO IS THAT GM! #BKGOESHARD!
Marty… it’s impossible to have a civil conversation or argument with him and he thinks he’s way smarter than actually he is. He could use a dose of reality AKA my piss lolz
There you have it! Big BLUE GOING HARD! #BK !!!!!
ENOUGH SAID
