Jay's Team-by-Team Post-Draft Analysis
San Antonio Spurs
1. Micheal Ray Richardson PG 6'5'' 189 21 B C A- A- C+ A
19. Lonnie Shelton PF 6'8'' 240 21 B C+ C- B- C B
21. Jacky Dorsey PF 6'7'' 230 21 C D+ C A- B+ C
23. Scott May SF 6'7'' 215 22 B C C- B+ C B
26. Mo Howard SG 6'2'' 170 22 B- B- C C+ C C
Analysis
It'd be hard to give the Spurs anything but a high grade given their lottery fortune, but they did a great job drafting here. Michael Ray Richardson looks like the next great BBS point guard. He's bigger and stronger than most of his contemporaries and his notes say "huge" potential. HUGE. That may be enough to overshadow what could possibly be turnover issues and possible issues offensively. It can be a bit worrying when notes mention how athletic a guy is when his offensive ratings don't look initially impressive, but I think MRR will be fine.
I'm a fan of some of the other Spurs picks. Lonnie Shelton looks like he may be a decent candidate to survive a move to SF. Has a good jumpshot and can score inside, may be a value pick. Jacky Dorsey may not have potential and may not be a stats defender, but a guy who can defend and rebound is a value pick in the late draft. Much better than ending up with a guy like Mo Howard, who looks to just take up cap.
Just be warned. The last time I remember a guy taking a PG prospect over a wing with great notes, he turned out to be Bingo Smith. Also, I suck.
Portland Trail Blazers
2. Tree Rollins C 7'1'' 235 21 B- C D- A- B- A
Analysis
The first thought I had when looking at this pick was the possibility that it could be a Sam Bowie situation (IRL), it just so happens that the team in question is the Trail Blazers. But Tree looks pretty damn good as a player. He will likely be a top-5 shot blocker and a solid inside scorer. I'm just not thrilled with him offensively as he seems to just be really solid. I'd also worry that he may struggle with foul issues. That said, he looks to be a 15/10/3 guy and shot blockers never lose value. Not my favorite pick, but a good one.
Cleveland Cavaliers
3. Adrian Dantley SF 6'5'' 208 20 A- C+ D+ C+ C+ A
Analysis
From Draft Notes:
Those notes are down right delicious. Dantley is easily my favorite player in the draft. The apple of my eye. He's 20 with exceptional potential. Great finisher with a very good jump shot. Great and very good and 20 and exceptional. This guy should dominate offensively out of the gate. He's a #1 option on a championship team. Looks to even have enough skill to see some minutes at PF. This guy should be a beast.
The only concern (other than me liking him...because I'm terrible at drafting) would be his defense. You'd like it if he was more of a 2 way player, but his offense should be good enough to surround him with scorers in a situation somewhat similar to what Orlando does with Bingo (though obviously Bingo is the DPOY). I'm extremely excited for Dantley's reign.
New Orleans Hornets
4. Robert Parish C 7'0'' 230 23 B- C- D B B A
15. Richard Washington PF 6'11'' 220 21 B- C+ C- B- C+ B
24. Tom Abernethy SF 6'7'' 220 22 B C C- B C B
25. Ira Terrell PF 6'8'' 200 22 B C D C+ C+ B
Analysis
Solid. Really solid. I don't see a superstar in the Big Chief, but a very consistent and capable starting center. Notes indicated he's capable in the post and will pound the glass. Won't be a great shot blocker but will give opponents fits with his post defense and strength. Not much to really criticize with this pick here.
Richard Washington looks to be another good pickup here. Likely better than Kupchek who went a pick before. Has offensive game out to the 3 point line and can block shots. The rest of these guys are kind of unspectacular.
Indiana Pacers
5. Alex English SG 6'7'' 190 22 B+ C+ C C C A
Analysis
He's like the poor man's Dantley. But where Dantley's notes say great, English only gets a "good". Will likely be a really good scorer and a plus rebounder from the SG position, but that's about it. A lack of defense and ball handling could mean he's going to give up as many points as he scores. A good TC could change his course, but English just looks to be nothing more than good.
Boston Celtics
6. James Edwards C 7'0'' 225 20 B C- D B- C+ A
8. Sonny Parker SF 6'6'' 200 21 B+ C C+ A- C+ B
9. Quinn Buckner PG 6'3'' 190 22 B- C+ B- A C- B
Analysis
Word is James Edwards has over 85 inside and strength. That is important. And that's what he's going to have to hang his hate on as he isn't much on the defensive end and will likely be a poor rebounder. C+ rebounding with "amazing strength" is a red flag. This guy looks like he needs to be in an inside offense to fully reach his value. A solid pick if used correctly.
Parker looks to have a ceiling of 3rd option potential, but his floor is still starter level. His handle rating is high in the things that matter (ball handling and quickness) and he has a capable offensive game.
Quinn Buckner looks fantastic. Elite defense right off the bat with good handles. Notes only indicate that he's only solid on offense, but Fatty Taylor (I know, I will mention him so many) was too. And Quinn looks to have some potential. I love defensive PGs so I love this pick. Speaking of defense...
Los Angeles Lakers
7. Dennis Johnson PG 6'4'' 185 22 B C C+ A- C B
Analysis
Dennis Johnson is full of win even though I will admit that I don't know if he's a PG. He probably shouldn't play there to take advantage of his blocking ability, but he was drafted as such. I think he could make a deadly SG despite having no real range out to the three point line. I keep having dreams of Bobby Jones, guard edition and I can't but love this pick. I think DJ is going to be a unique pleasure to have on a team.
Milwaukee Bucks
10. John Lucas PG 6'3'' 175 23 C B B+ A- D B
13. Alvin Scott SF 6'7'' 185 21 B- C C A C B
22. Fly Williams SG 6'5'' 200 23 C+ B C C C- C
Analysis
Quick. Handles. Great midrange game. Impressive cocaine line skills (even greater than MRR). Lucas seems like a solid player. Maybe a starter even? With a pick like this you can understand why aar is such a big fan of Norm Van Lier. The rub will be whether Lucas can ever overcome his struggles from close or far, because living in the middle will kill your FG%.
Alvin Scott can defend. There is some worth to that, but he looks like a career backup.
Chicago Bulls
11. Mike Dunleavy PG 6'3'' 180 22 C+ B B C+ D+ B
Analysis
Mike Dunleavy seems the most vanilla of the PG prospects in this draft (appropriately). I just don't see it. He's okay. I'll just have to trust Play's judgement on this one.
Atlanta Hawks
12. Bob Wilkerson SG 6'6'' 195 22 B B C C+ C B
14. Mitch Kupchak PF 6'9'' 230 22 B- C D- B B- B
Analysis
Bob Wilkerson is essentially worthless if "decent upside" doesn't translate to anything in TC. He could either be a big time scorer or just some guy who lives on the Vet FA list for a couple of years. I have no idea which he will be. Likely a scrub, but anytime a guys notes say "decent upside" in the late lotto with ratings to make said upside useful, he deserves a look.
Kupchak is a career backup but may be capable of some impact minutes off of the bench. Jim Washington is probably the better PF prospect, but Kupchak should at least be serviceable.
Washington Wizards
16. Johnny Davis PG 6'2'' 170 21 B C+ C+ B C- B
18. Wally Walker SF 6'7'' 190 22 B C C A- C B
Analysis
I don't think it goes much further than that. He's solid. He's in that clump of PGs that really need a couple of TCs to seperate themselves from the rest of the pack. Davis looks to be one more capable of scoring in the paint but not as impressive defensively as many of the others. Could have potential as a scoring point. Wally Walker is just bleh. He looks like a terrible offensive player.
Los Angeles Clippers
17. Earl Tatum SF 6'5'' 185 23 B C+ C+ B+ C- C
20. Major Jones PF 6'9'' 225 23 C+ C- D+ B B+ C
Analysis
Earl Tatum should be immediately moved to SG as his game seems much more suited there. No scouted potential, but if he has some potential hidden away he could be one of the better players in this draft. I always love notes that say very good scorer, even if they are a dime a dozen.
There is no mention of offense in the notes of Major Jones, and appropriately so. His no-nonsense name matches his no-nonsense game. He will bang, he'll get rebounds, he will lockdown the post, he probably would throw elbows if FBB allowed it, and he can even get some steals. Nothing special, but rebounding and defense are always needed.
Toronto Raptors
27. Armond Hill PG 6'4'' 190 23 C+ C+ B A- D C
Analysis
Shades of Fatty Taylor? This guy looks like a keeper. At the very least a backup who can give you some defense and has a respectable offensive repertoire.
Detroit Pistons
28. Ron Lee SG 6'4'' 193 23 C+ B C+ C+ D+ B
Analysis
This guy looks like he sucks.
Golden State Warriors
29. Larry Wright PG 6'1'' 160 21 C+ B- B- C+ D+ B
Analysis
Larry Wright isn't much of a difference from Mike Dunleavy ratings wise, and he was picked 18 slots earlier. Looks to be solid value for the pick. There could be slight worries that in a draft so deep with PGs that he didn't even get notes, but there is steal possibility there. Still a great value pick here.

Analysis
From Draft Notes:
a big time scorer with exceptional potential. He loves to score inside. Can get any pretty much anyone and is a great finisher. Very good jump shooter. Solid ball handler. Very good quickness. Very good rebounder with solid strength. Not much of a defender.
