Western Conference GM Rankings
Same formula: random numbers given to each GM. Will rank the Western Conference and then the league as a whole at the end.
Completely subjective, trying to create discussion, etc.
Midwest Division
Dallas Mavericks—Greg—62
I think Greg is a great dude, I just think he’s a horrible, horrible GM. I think I used to consider him average, but if you are so average for so long, you pretty much suck. Greg hasn’t come close to reaching a finals, always stays in the middle, and can never make the move for a true star. He’s had some really good players on his team, too, and just never breaks the bank when he needs to. Just doesn’t seem to have a coherent strategy.
Denver Nuggets—Greeme—70
Greeme will occasionally make the random great trade, but for the most part, his moves are mind numbing. He still finds ways to win a lot of the time—which I can respect—but the way he values players is usually off-beat, and he’s way too erratic within a season to ever be considered a threat.
Houston Rockets—Jordan—88
When he’s active, Jordan is consistently one of the best GM’s in BBS. He’s put some elite teams together and has had a lot of success with the Rockets team. I find him indecisive and often hard to trade with, but I guess that helps him a lot of the time. I think he’s just outside of the elite class of GM’s, but certainly a top 10 guy.
Memphis Grizzlies—Pig—72
I feel like Pig has generally been around the middle of the pack, so that’s where I’ll keep him. He’s a really good dude who is easy to trade with and generally takes a logical approach. Still, his teams are often up and down, and he hasn’t been able to establish lasting and consistent success in BBS. Very, very capable when he’s active though.
Minnesota Timberwolves—Game—67
Game’s recent W/L suggests he should be at least considered an average GM. I won’t go that far yet. While I think Game is a really nice guy and a good contributor to the league, my trade conversations with him are so exhausting and I just don’t see the logic behind a lot of his thinking. Why are you tanking with Earl Monroe? Why not at least try to find some good youth for him? I don’t know---Game just doesn’t strike me as the most rational guy.
New Orleans Hornets—Kobe—55
Dude flat out sucked last time. I’m expecting the same again!
San Antonio Spurs—Blue—76
Tough to judge here, because Blue was borderline horrible in his last stint here, but has also been considered an elite GM before. I’ll put him in the middle—if he’s active, he could be one of the better GM’s out West. Still, you’d like to see San Antonio making more moves to try to move up the Western Conference Power Rankings.
Pacific Division
Golden State Warriors—CC—71
Meh @ leaving Cleveland on the Reed deal. I feel like I should dock CC some points. -2.
Los Angeles Clippers—Martinez—79
Formally a bottom dweller, Martinez has developed into a pretty good GM recently. He’s always been good at rebuilding, but he’s finally turned rebuilds into an elite team and actually won a title. He’s still hard to deal with and sometimes erratic, but it’s hard to argue with his results lately.
Los Angeles Lakers—Styro—77
I can’t remember Styro’s previous stint in BBS so forgive me if I’m off in my history. I’m just going off of his Lakers tenure, and with that, there is a lot to consider. The Lakers have been one of the best regular season teams in the last 10 years, but they have failed to win a title. Styro has amassed a lot of talent, but has been unable to make everything fit. At some point you have to excuse bad luck and start looking at the man in charge, and Styro has yet to get LA over the hump.
Oklahoma City Thunder—Habes—91
Haberman has been one of the best 3 or 4 GM’s in the last ten seasons. He is prone to falling in holes where his teams lack value over a period of time, but will inevitably get out of them and end up with a contender soon enough. The Thunder have six finals appearances and have been a staple of the Western Conference in recent years. Habes also has a distinct, aggressive style that usually pays dividends come playoff time. Fuck picks, win ships? I like it.
Phoenix Suns—Outlawz—87
This grade is solely based off of Outlawz beginning tenure in BBS. He was widely considered the best GM in the league—better than Play—and has put together some of the best teams we’ve ever seen. That said, he’s horrible when he’s inactive, and more likely than not we will be seeing a middle of the road Outlawz over the elite Outlawz we knew a while ago. The West needs the Outlawz of old to come back so there can be a proper power balance among the two conferences.
Portland Trailblazers—Broph—92
Broph has been mediocre of late, but he’s been a proven success in the past and is one of the smarter GM’s here. He definitely has a vision for his teams and can’t stand mediocrity, which I respect. He’s probably borderline elite, so it should be interesting to see what he does with a Portland ball-club that started with a fair amount of value.
Utah Jazz—JAH—68
A poor man’s DJ at this point, JAH has had some good moments in BBS but has failed to capture on a number of opportunities. The same word has continually been brought up for JAH in these type of articles: complacent. And it’s still far too accurate. The Jazz are always a middling team, usually have their own picks, and rarely make noise in the playoffs. JAH is usually too afraid to pull off the big move and trade for a star.
