1. Philadelphia 76ers - Darryl Dawkins C 6'11'' 251 18 B D+ D+ B C+ A
There wasn’t a consensus #1 pick this year, but I think most people knew Dawkins would come off the board first. And when the 76ers got lucky in the lotto and jumped up to #1 that’s who they selected. Some thought Roundfield would go #1 because he is ready to make an immediate impact, but the 76ers didn’t really need that so it was an easy choice for them. Dawkins notes were great, his rebounding and turnover issues could have scared some GMs away but he’s only 18 so he has a lot of time to grow. 76ers already have a young franchise player in Gervin so the future looks bright in Philadelphia. I could easily see Dawkins being B+ D+ D+ A- B or something after his first TC with the big potential he’s expected to have.
Grade: A
2. Washington Wizards - Dan Roundfield PF 6'8'' 205 22 B C D+ B+ B A
Wizards also had some lotto luck and moved up a few spots to #2. Roundfield had the best notes so I think after Dawkins came off the board this was an easy pick for the Wizards. There is no real weakness in Roundfield’s game and he could start right away if u needed him too. Turnovers could be an issue early but he should settle around 2 which isn’t bad. The one question mark could be his potential, but he’s already very good so if he is camped properly and has a few decent TCs I don’t see why Roundfield can’t become a top big man in the league.
Grade: A
3. Chicago Bulls - Gus Williams PG 6'2'' 175 22 B C B B D A
The Bulls traded up 1 spot to #3 to secure their guy. Bulls needed a young PG to lead their team and Gus Is who they wanted. Didn’t love the pick initially, but apparently play had some inside info because after a few camps he now has B+ inside and B+ handles. He reminded me to much of Attles that’s why I didn’t want him. He could be a better version of Attles though since he shouldn’t have turnover issues and is coming into the league a better scorer, but he won’t have the 7 rpg either. I think Williams will be a good player, not great but he is off to a nice start after those camps.
Grade: B/A- after camps
4. New Orleans Hornets - David Thompson SG 6'4'' 195 21 B B C C D+ A
The Hornets didn’t love anyone at 3 so they were happy to trade back one spot and were still able to pick up who they wanted. Thompson’s notes on scoring were the most promising of the top prospects, he doesn’t have far to go to get to A- A- scoring. Turnovers and defense were the red flags on Thompson, but he should be able to become at least an average defender after a few TCs and camps. His scoring is what he was coveted for though and most believe he will be the best scorer from this draft.
Grade: B+
5. Cleveland Cavs -World B. Free SG 6'2'' 185 21 B B- B- C D+ A
Don’t really understand this pick by the Cavs, they already have two young wings who can score but can’t defend and that’s what Free looks like he will be. Slight chance he can play PG I guess but notes suggest he would need a lot of handling help. I think Adams would have been the better pick here for the Cavs based on need. I’m not too high on Adams though so if Cavs thought Free was the best player available and plan on trading him I don’t mind the pick as much.
Grade: B-
6. Milwaukee Bucks - Alvan Adams C 6'9'' 210 21 B C B B C+ A
Adams was a player considered for the #1 pick, so the Bucks make a nice value pick here at 6. And it was pretty much the obvious pick as it was basically a 6 player draft at the top. His lack of rebounding and shot blocking combined with the fact he might have turnover issues was enough to turn off some GMs. I wasn’t that high on Adams, I don’t think he will be that good, but I can also just as easily see him being crazy good with his skill set if he has the potential.
Grade: B+
7. Minnesota Timberwolves - Ricky Sobers PG 6'3'' 198 22 B- B- B B C- A
Sobers could have went top 5 if someone liked him enough so I think this is another easy pick by the Wolves as Sobers was at least the 7th best prospect. His ratings look great and he should be a good scoring PG, but the turnover issue once again made him less attractive then he would have been. I don’t think it will be a huge problem, he just needs one big TC and camps and he could be a good starting PG. Wolves would have liked to get one of the top 6, but I think they come away fairly happy with Sobers at 7.
Grade: B+
8. Atlanta Hawks -Tom Boswell C 6'9'' 220 22 B B C- B B- B
This is a nice pick by the Hawks, could have gone a lot of different ways but Boswell was probably the best player available. Good notes, but obviously his turnover problem stopping him from moving to SF hurts his value. A big coming into the league with B outside doesn’t happen often though, if you RC and AC him out and he has a decent TC he could be a 20+ ppg player.
Grade: A-
9. Utah Jazz - Gus Gerard SF 6'8'' 200 22 C+ C+ B- A B B
Easy selection for the Jazz I imagine, they needed a player just like Gerard. They have scorers they just couldn’t stop anyone last year, Gerard should come in right away and help immensely on defense. He should be able to play 3 different positions and I think will have a very good career as a 4th-5th starter. Could average over 4 SPG+BPG so he will be valuable around the league and if he ever develops his scoring at all he could be a stud.
Grade: B+
10. Memphis Grizzlies - Bill Willoughby PF 6'8'' 205 18 C+ C C B C A
Not sure how I feel about this pick, I was never big on drafting on potential especially if the guys sucks. Willoughby has a long way to go to become a good player. He would have to string together a couple of great TCs, which could happen but it isn’t very likely. There were a lot of players on the board who are much better and could have helped right away. Not a terrible pick just a little high for me.
Grade: C+
11. Chicago Bulls-Marvin Webster C 7'1'' 225 23 C+ C D A- B B
Good pick, you should get what you see with Webster. Not going to be a scorer, but will be a nice 5th starter or sixth man who can block a lot of shots and rebound. Bulls needed bigs so it’s a good need pick as well as value since shot blocking is always needed.
Grade: B+
12. Chicago Bulls - Joe Bryant SF 6'9'' 185 21 B C+ C B C+ B
Best pick of the draft IMO, I wanted jellybean. Bryant is going to be a stud I think, his only weakness is his outside shooting and that’s the easiest thing to upgrade. I could be wrong though a lot of his inside, defense, rebounding could be high because of strength, jumping and quickness. Not a lot of risk with the pick and I think his boom potential makes it a good pick.
Grade: A
13. Portland Trailblazers - Bill Robinzine SF 6'7'' 230 22 B B D+ B C+ B
The Blazers round out the lotto by taking Bill Robinzine. Safe pick by the Blazers here, Robinzine is already a very good player so his lack of upside shouldn’t hurt him as much. As long as he doesn’t go backwards in TC and camped out then he could be a starter on a good team. I think Robinzine will be a good player but lack of upside definitely hurts he could have a bad TC and kill his value.
