Ray Allen
SG
6’5 205
21 years old
Connecticut
Draft ratings: C A- C C D A
Profile[/u]
Strengths:
Ray Allen possesses one of the most beautiful shooting strokes in college basketball and soon to be in pros. Allen is a meticulous shooter and should average more than 40 percent from behind the three-point stripe as well as be one of the most accomplished free throw shooters in BBS history. His stellar play at the University of Connecticut, which includes a first team All-American selection, Big East Player of the Year and ranking third all-time on the Huskies’ scoring list, should indicate further success for Allen. An upcoming portrayal of fictional baller Jesus Shuttlesworth in the 1998 motion picture, “He Got Game” has further fueled the buzz of Allen as a can’t miss young prospect should he declare for the draft.
Weaknesses:
Allen will enter BBS as a below average backcourt defender. He will get his share of steals as his defense develops but will probably never be an elite defender. Rebounding will also be a significant issue for Allen as he does not box out opponents very well. While a decent ball handler, do not expect him to create many opportunities for other teammates and still turn over the ball at a decent rate. Allen may never be a franchise-type player but a very good second or third scorer.
Outlook:
Allen ranks just behind Allen Iverson and Kobe Bryant should they all declare in the shooting guards class. While Allen may not make the same impact as Iverson and Bryant as a rookie, his potential to grow is very high and should make any prospective BBS team pleased with his selection. Expect Allen to go somewhere in the top 10, most likely in the top 5, but probably no lower than the eighth pick.
