Glossary:
PER - an attempt at combing all stats into one, per minute rating. Meh, not that applicable here, but I listed it anyways. Average is 15.
fbb_oRtg - a player's points produced per 100 possessions used, taking into account shooting efficiency, turnover rate, and offensive rebounding. League average is 112.4.
Poss% - The percentage of a team's possessions that a player used, primarily by taking a shot, getting to the free throw line, or turning the ball over.
TS% - A true measure of shooting efficiency, similar to eFG% except it also factors in free throws. League average is 53.6%.
TO/poss - The percentage of possessions a player turned the ball over. Again, assists are not factored into possessions. League average is 11.2%.
REB% - The percentage of available rebounds a player grabbed while on the court. League average is 10%.
PF Top 10 Rankings
These rankings do not take contract or age into account, only who the best players in the league are right now, at this very moment. To decide that, I've used stats primarily from this season combined with ratings and a given player's statistical history.
1. Jerry Lucas PF 29 6'9'' 242 A- C C A- A C
-The top PF in the league is probably the easiest position to pick. After Lucas, there simply isn't another PF who is elite in every catagory. He and Wilt form as good of a frontcourt as there is in the league.
2. Mel Daniels PF 25 6'9'' 220 B- B+ D B- B+ A
-I'll catch some flack for this, especially because I keep ranking Wolves players highly despite their overall performance being far from dominant, but the PF crop here is pretty spread out talent wise, and Daniels is the only guy who contributes in every facet of the game. Offensively he puts up points at an efficient rate, doesn't turn the ball over, and is a quality rebounder. Defensively he's as good as it gets stats wise, though one has to wonder just how big his overall impact is when a team led by Cunningham isn't especially good defensively. Statistically though, Mel doesn't have a weakness, and though the Wolves are only slightly better than mediocre, I think that has more to do with players who don't fit well together and some wasted bench minutes.
3. Bob Boozer PF 32 6'8'' 218 B+ C C- A- B+ C
-Eh, I like Boozer, but I struggled to put him as #3 on this list. This is more about a lack of top tier PFs then it is about Boozer being good. That said, despite his mediocre FG%, his TS% is pretty damned good thanks to his tremendous free throw shooting. He doesn't have any obvious holes, he just isn't as dominant as I'd expect the third best PF in the league to be.
4. Phil Jackson PF 24 6'8'' 220 B C C+ A B B
-Jackson is, for the most part, a role player. With that said, he's about as good of a role player as you can find. He's not going to score 25 a game, but he'll give you 17, do a good job on the boards, play top notch defense, and produce efficiently offensively.
5. Bob Petit PF 37 6'9'' 220 B+ C D+ B- A D
-Petit could still be as high as #3 on this list, the only thing holding him back is the drop off in defense. Offensively he's still probably better than anyone on this list other than Lucas, thanks to his ability to get to the free throw line. He wasn't valued as much as LaRusso this offseason, but I think he's the more valuable player.
6. John Tresvant PF 29 6'7'' 215 A- C- D+ A- B C
-Despite clearly inferior ratings, Tresvant is basically a mirror image of Jim Davis (see below) offensively, with the addes bonus of keeping his turnovers down. He's not dominant on the glass, but he's solid in that regard, and he will block a shot on occasion as well.
7. Jim Davis PF 27 6'9'' 228 A C C B+ B+ C
-Davis has bounced between SF and PF in his young career, settling in at what seems to be his natural position this season. Offensively he can light it up, but he doesn't put up stats defensively, is a mediocre rebounder, and turns it over more than what's ideal.
8. Happy Hairston PF 27 6'7'' 227 B+ C D- C+ A- C
-This PF crop is weak enough that I don't feel bad for putting a bit of a sleeper on this list. Happy has put up some pretty awesome per minute stats offensively, going mostly unnoticed on the Mavs. He seemingly never turns the ball over, puts up high volume, and shoots the ball efficiently. Defensively there isn't much there, but at this point in the list all our players have a clear flaw or are average in a few areas.
9. Connie Dierking PF 33 6'9'' 234 A- C- D+ A- B+ C
-Offensively, Dierking leaves a lot to be desired. The 51.6 TS% is subpar, and he doesnt look like he's capable of putting up big volume anymore. Still, he's an absolute stud defender, and is far from a liability on the offensive end.
10. Gene Moore PF 24 6'9'' 225 B+ C D A- A- B
-Solid all around game, still isn't quite up to par offensively though. A nice TC and he could be as high as 2 on this list next season.
Honorable Mention
Ollie Johnson - Has put up awesome numbers in limited minutes.
Cleveland Buckner - If defense is all you need, Cleveland's your guy.
Lamont McGee - Still solid, but not really a game changer.
Ben Warley - Shot blocking is a big plus, mediocre offensively.
Wayne Hightower - Shot blocker who won't hurt you on the offensive end.
Tom Heinsohn - Not the player he once was, but still can contribute.
Ira Harge - Shot blocking galore.
Gene Guarilia - One of the worst offensive players in the league. Also one of the best defensively.
Any other shot blocker I missed - Can never have too much shot blocking.
Dishonorable Mention
Wes Unseld - 102.8 oRtg, doesn't put up stats defensively, and shoots more than a guy as inefficient as he is should.
Al Tucker - Shouldn't be playing.
Warren Davis - Doesn't do anything well enough to deserve the time he gets. Doesn't perform to his ratings.
