Even though some have complained about this draft, it is actually one of the best drafts in awhile, at least for picks up until 20. We could see forfeits in the early 20s, which we haven't seen in awhile. 3 players seem to be on another level but there are numerous players who will start in this league. The weak front court selection is more than made up for by the amount of talented wings. It is interesting to see how players like swift and beard will be affected by similar players from the past who are borderline busts (jimmy walker and George carter). Also interesting to see where players with odd skill sets, like Luther Green, will be drafted.
1. Atlanta Hawks (from Memphis Grizzlies) - Norm Van Lier PG 6'1'' 173 22 C+ B- B+ B C A
Touted as the next great pg, he should be a pretty easy pick at 1st for the pgless hawks. He will fit in well with Monroe and DVA to form a high scoring 1-3. He has a great jumpshot and can pretty much do it all except hit the 3 but he seems to have the potential to fix that. Given the BBS pg bias I don't see how Van Lier can be passed up here.
2. Utah Jazz- Bingo Smith SF 6'5'' 195 23 B B C B- B- A
The only player in contention for the #1 spot. It would surprise nobody if he became the best player in the draft. He can score all over with a great midrange game. Rebounds, blocks, steals – can pretty much do everything well. Probably not going to be a great positional defender. Hopefully the Jazz's collection of draft busts won't affect him.
3. New Orleans Hornets- Jo Jo White SG 6'3'' 190 22 B- B- B B C A
I have White just behind Smith. Not the offensive player that Smith is but a better positional defender. Either way both should see numerous all star games before they retire. A good passer who can also pull up and hit the mid range jumper. Will he be able to move to pg? Only time will tell.
4. Milwaukee Bucks - Steve Mix PF 6'7'' 215 21 B C C- B- B- B
Touted as a very good offensive player, he has just average looking ratings. He might fall a few spots bc he looks like a tweener. On the one hand, he doesn't look like he can hit the three and his post d is very high so a gm would be tempted to leave him at pf. On the other hand, he can't block and is just a decent rebounder so will he be able to play pf? Notes look very nice so I have him at 4 but he could end up busting.
5. Milwaukee Bucks (from Philadelphia 76ers) - Bob Dandridge SF 6'6'' 195 21 A- C+ C C+ C+ A
I have never been a fan of this type of player but I seem to remember that Broph like them. A sf who likes the ball in the post has never been my favorite type. That said he should be a solid rebounder albeit a poor defender.
6. Golden State Warriors- Wil Jones SF 6'8'' 205 22 B C+ C B+ C+ A
Kinda confusing notes. He is a nice offensive player but nothing special. Ah well, he can block and steal and he will get boards. That plus A pot should get him picked.
7. Dallas Mavericks - Skeeter Swift SG 6'3'' 204 23 B A- C- C D A
Don Ohl? Jimmy Walker? Fred Carter or Butch Bears would be the safe pick here but sometimes you gotta take a risk. The Mavs have a bunch of ok young players but nobody really good so I see them taking a shot here even though they already have Wali Jones
8. Atlanta Hawks- Rick Roberson PF 6'9'' 231 22 B+ C C- B B- B
Roberson might be a bit of a stretch here but the Hawks are pretty set at the 1-3. He will be a good offensive player and has 15 foot range. Decent defender, will get some blocks, decent rebounder. That would have made him the sixth or seventh big picked last year but this year he might be the best big around.
9. Denver Nuggets (from Miami Heat) - Butch Beard SG 6'3'' 185 22 B+ C C A C B
The Nuggets will be thrilled if Beard is around at 9 and won't be scared away by the George Carter comparisons. He isn't flashy and won't ever be an offensive stud but he will be able to play d and help out on the boards.
10. Golden State Warriors (from NJ Nets)- Neal Walk C 6'10'' 220 21 B+ C- D+ B- B- B
They really need a big. They already have hazard, Chaney, freeman and Jones (picked at 6) so Carter or Allen wouldn't help much. Walk can score inside. If he is a good ft shooter he will be an offensive presence. Big if. He will be able to hold his own of the boards but not on the defensive end.
11. Portland Trailblazers (from NY Knicks) - Fred Carter SG 6'3'' 185 24 B+ C+ C+ A- C B
Unlike most other teams the Blazers have solid youth up front so they won't be tempted to take one of the bigs who are left. Fred is very similar to Beard. Good scorer inside and a good midrange game. Won't turn the ball over and a very good defender. But he won't get much better.
12. LA Lakers - Willie Wise SF 6'5'' 210 22 B+ C D+ B+ C+ B
Seems to be the BPA. He will be a good starter in the league and doesn't really have a hole in his game except for the lack of a three point shot. Won't turn the ball over often, will get steals, boards and will play solid d. Won't ever be a star but will probably start for a good portion of his career.
13. Utah Jazz (from Indiana Pacers) - Lucius Allen PG 6'2'' 175 22 C+ B+ B B C- B
Closing out the lotto is Lucius Allen. He will be a solid pg for years in this league. Not a ton of upside but he should be a starting pg on a team which runs an outside offense. He is extremely quick and one of the best athletes in the draft.
14. Denver Nuggets - Rich Niemann C 7'0'' 245 23 C+ C- D+ A- B B
15. NY Knicks (from Minnesota Timberwolves) - Willie Norwood PF 6'7'' 220 22 A- C- C- C+ C+ B
16. Toronto Raptors - Luther Green SF 6'7'' 190 22 A D+ D+ D+ A C
17. Charlotte Bobcats - Garfield Smith PF 6'9'' 235 23 C D+ C- A- B+ C
18. Memphis Grizzlies (from Chicago Bulls)- Mike Davis SG 6'3'' 185 23 B B+ D+ C+ D B
19. Washington Wizards - Donald Sidle PF 6'8'' 215 23 B- C+ C- B B- B
20. NO Hornets (from Detroit Pistons) - Fatty Taylor PG 6'0'' 175 23 B- C B- A C+ B
21. Milwaukee Bucks (from Cleveland Cavaliers) - Dallas Thornton SG 6'4'' 190 23 C- A- A- B D+ C
22. Atlanta Hawks (from Phoenix Suns) - Lee Winfield SG 6'2'' 174 22 C A- C+ B- C B
23. SA Spurs - Steve Kuberski C 6'8'' 215 21 B+ C- C- C+ B+ C
24. Boston Celtics - Mack Calvin PG 6'0'' 165 22 B- B- B- B- D+ B
25. Milwaukee Bucks (from Portland Trailblazers)- Lamar Green C 6'7'' 210 22 C C- D B- B B
26. LA Clippers - Bob Arnzen SF 6'5'' 205 21 B- B- C C+ B+ B
27. OKC Thunder - Bernie Williams PG 6'3'' 175 23 B B B C C C
28. Minnesota Timberwolves (from Houston Rockets) - Luther Rackley C 6'10'' 220 23 C+ D+ D+ B+ C+ C
29. NO Hornets (from Orlando Magic) - Simmie Hill PF 6'7'' 233 22 B- B- C- B- B- C
