Uh.. because it isn't? Its not something to be feared or used as it has been. Its no longer an economic model but a scare tactic in America. josepth mccarthy's fault

I'm not especially opinionated politically, mainly because the system in place is currently so fucked up that having an opinion doesn't seem to matter, but the main issue I've always heard associated with socialism is that people don't trust the government to actually allocate money in an efficient manner. The idea that I'll pay more into the system than the value received back isn't exactly appealing. (again, this isn't my own personal opinion, as I'm not informed enough to have a valid one, just the argument I commonly heard referenced in a shitty sociology class)

It's not just a matter of the rich though. My family is about as middle class as it gets, yet my dad would pretty heavily oppose socialism because he doesn't trust the government to use his money well.

To get more than you need? Most people aren't happy with simply what they need.

I really think we should just divide the nation into Red America and Blue America. Everyone goes where they please and we'll see who is right and who is wrong about their policies. Well this wouldn't work. The Republican congressmen who are crying about spending are the one's who spend the most. Red states outspend blue states significantly.

Socialism is taken as a terrible word for no reason really. Our system mixes capitalism with socialism to an extent, but probably not enough. If you look at other industrialized economies, we aren't really even there yet....
