I really like this years crop. A few guys who could be superstars and lots of players who will see all star games in their careers. A bunch of guys who could blow up with upside and a bunch of guys who will get picked high and will go bust. And Tal Brody – possibly the best Israeli basketball player ever even though his ratings suck. I will pick him if I can get my hands on a late first round pick. But I digress…….
1. Phoenix Suns - Billy Cunnigham PF 6'6'' 215 22 B C C B B+ A
Yeah they just drafted Paul Silas but at #1 you have to take the
best player around. Cunningham seems like he can do everything except shoot the three. Superscout Spencer labeled him "a super player". He looks to score, rebound and be a great stats defender. What's not to like? (besides the haircut)
2. Orlando Magic - Rick Barry SF 6'7'' 205 21 A- B C C+ C A
The Magic team is starting to take shape. Lucas at pf, Goodrich at sg and now Barry at sf. Barry is going to be a stud scorer from day one. He isn't great a passer but he won't turn the ball over much and who wants him to pass anyway? A surprisingly good rebounder. Not a great defender but that won't stop him from getting picked at #2. In a survey 12 gms claim that they wouldn't pick Barry saying that he shoots free throws like a 4th grade girl.
3. Los Angeles Clippers - Bill Bradley SF 6'5'' 205 22 B B C A- C- B
Since they generally tank for 2-3 years it is possible that the Clips opt for somebody less ready to go with more upside. I think that it is too hard to pass up a player with Bradley's talents. I see him turning into a Jason Paulson type player.
4. Minnesota Timberwolves (from Portland Trail Blazers) - Dick Van Arsdale SG 6'5'' 210 22 B+ C+ C+ B C A
We all hate seeing top teams that end up with top picks. I'm pretty sure that once the Blazers home/away schedule evens out this pick will drop, at least I hope so. The question for the Wolves will be if they try to fill a need and take a defensive/rebounding big or if they go bpa. Since there are so many defensive/rebounding types this year – Buntin, Porter, Branson, Washington, Fox, Kimball – I would think that DBW would go bpa and then try to trade for another big. If Bill falls to the Wolves that would be a great fit for them. If not, they will take DVA who looks to be slightly better than TVA.
5. Cleveland Cavaliers - Tom Van Arsdale SG 6'5'' 202 22 B B- C- B C A
Not as good as his brother but he should prove himself worthy of going top 5. I think that Bob Love might be the better player but the Cavs already have a scoring big and I think they would be better off adding TVA.
6. Memphis Grizzlies - Bob Love PF 6'8'' 215 22 B+ C+ D+ B C+ A
Not really sure what the Grizz are trying to do in general but Bob Love would be a great fit. He gives them an inside scoring presence allowing Don Nelson to move back to sf where his rebounding will give the grizz an advantage.
7. Charlotte Bobcats - Bob Weiss PG 6'2'' 180 23 C B B C+ D+ A
The Bobcats next gm, assuming hf continues to hoard decent young talent, will start off in a decent position. Bob Weiss doesn't have great ratings but his notes look nice and he could turn out very good. I can see Buntin going here but when it's close I always take the pg.
8. Toronto Raptors - Willie Somerset PG 5'8'' 170 23 B- B C C+ D A
This team is so much better than it's record. 2 stud scorers and 2 very good defensive/rebounding bigs. I think their pg is holding them back though some gms seem to love him. Weiss would be a great pick if he dropped. I have a bunch of bigs ranked higher but I don't see him getting another defensive/rebounding big to add to Stokes and Beatty.
9. Milwaukee Bucks (from Oklahoma City Thunder) - Bill Buntin C 6'7'' 250 23 B- C- C- A- B B
Not sure what the Bucks were thinking with the trade that got them this pick. They had a top 5 record in the league even though they played twice as many games on the road!! Assuming they resign Tandy they will need another big to play alongside Wright. Buntin should fit right in. A strong player who can block shots and rebound.
10. Boston Celtics - Willie Porter PF 6'7'' 210 23 C C- D- B+ A- B
Another team who can use a big. Well you came to the right draft for bigs. A bunch of the players left look more or less the same but Porter seems slightly better.
11. Dallas Mavericks - Jon McGlocklin SG 6'5'' 205 22 A- C C- C+ C A
If Jon really has upside then the Mavs could find themselves with a steal. Looks to be a very, very good scorer, albeit with no 3 pt shot. He also won't turn the ball over much. Looks like a poor man's Rick Barry.
12. Miami Heat - Jim Washington PF 6'6'' 210 22 C+ C- D- B+ B+ B
They would love to get a pg here but Pradd is a shoot first type and that is the last hing you need when you have Chico and Chet. Washington looks like he could develop into a very solid player.
13. Atlanta Hawks - Marlbert Pradd PG 6'3'' 170 20 B- B- B- B- C B
I don't think that Pradd will be great but it beats forcing Tracy Parker to play pg. One of the stranger things I have seen in BBS lately.
