Observations:
-The Point guard position is not as thin as Spencer said it was. Basically, you won't have faults with any point guards in the top 16-17. All of those guys can start on contending teams without problem and all can contribute positively. Everyone in the top 12 can be considered borderline all-stars or at least top 3 players on a playoff team.
-The position certainly thins out at around 20 or so. The guys in the 20's are all liabilities for some reason or another and I think it's safe to say that the bottom group of point guards are probably the worst out of any position in the league.
-What docked players the most? Turnovers, of course. Dexter Rider (18), John Wall (21), Cam Adams (23), and Guy Rodgers (26) all put up better numbers than a lot of players higher than them, but can't be considered legitimate point guard options at this point with their TO problems. Walll and Rider are better at SG, while I am sure Rodgers will eventually grow out of his problems. Adams is pretty much a lost cause.
-One player whose turnover problems did not hurt as much was Oscar Robertson (5). While his turnovers are outrageous, he contributes on so many other levels that they are less of an issue. 28/11/8, elite defense, and 50% shooting is so unbelievable that he is still a top five point guard despite his 4.3 turnovers. Blue definitely has to RC/AC the shit out of those handles if he wants Oscar to be the best player in the game.
-Bradley Barker (1) is ranked slightly higher than Rickey Francis (2) because of his far superior defense. Francis, though, is the better offensive player. Purnell Jackson would be in competition at point guard if that's where he was playing too.
-Phil Martin is the only A+ defender at point guard
-Whatever happened to Brady Cooper (22) and Renato Amare (25)? Cooper was once dubbed as mini-Francis and looked like a perennial 25 ppg scorer. Now? Only good offense to go along with atrocious defense. Amare has let turnovers define his career after a number of breakout early TC's.
