C Top 10 Rankings
These rankings do not take contract or age into account, only who the best players in the league are right now, at this very moment. To decide that, I've used stats primarily from this season combined with ratings and a given player's statistical history.
1.Alf Sjoberg C 7'0'' 305 30 B+ C+ D+ B+ A C
-Back at #1 again, Alf was up to his same old tricks last season. Offensively, he was the best center in the league, and it wasn't especially close. His 57.3 TS% was off the charts for a big, his turnover rate was low, and his rebounding was excellent. Defensively, he was nearly as good, though not quite at the same level as the Dickerson's of the world. He blocked a respectable number of shots, but wasn't the big time imposing force on that end that the truly elite defensive centers are. Still, he was just a notch below that, and similarly was just a notch below the elite rebounders of the league. The whole package comes together to form what is easily the most complete and productive center in the league. Should be interesting to see how far he can carry GAME's Warriors this season.
2.Christian Gola C 29 6'11'' 293 A- C+ C- A- B- C
-Offensively there's a pretty decent gap between Gola and the next group of bigs. With his 56% TS% and low turnover rate, Gola's capable of putting a team on his back and carrying them offensively. The Rockets shot the ball incredibly well last year, and Gola was a big reason for that. As a quality shot blocker as well, his only real weakness is he's not an elite rebounder. Still, there's a big enough gap between Gola's offense and the next three bigs to overcome his solid but unspectacular rebounding.
3.Evan Dickerson C 31 7'0'' 231 A- C D+ A- A- D
-A stalwart on these lists, Evan Dickerson is still more than getting it done at 31 (that rhymes). When it comes to shot blocking and rebounding, there aren't a lot of guys who are better than Dickerson. During his stay in Chicago, the Bulls' defense has consistently been elite, and there's no doubting that Dickerson is the main reason for that. Teamed up with Koni Bruton now, the Chicago front line is more imposing than ever. Not to be forgotten is his offensive impact however, it's still as good as any center in this league outside of Gola and Alf, and that's damned impressive going along with his defense and rebounding. There's no argument from me if you prefer Dickerson to Gola, it's entirely a need thing, with Dickerson being the more polished all around center.
4.Sean O'Mara C 32 7'1'' 320 B+ C D+ A- A- B
-O'Mara played PF for the Bucks, but I left him as a center as Milwaukee is the only team in the league where he would have played PF last year. The Bucks started off last season hot with Alf and O'Mara up front, with O'Mara playing beyond even his outstanding career norms. Unfortunately O'Mara slowed down a bit, though he still finished the season with damned good numbers. Offensively he's not as efficient as some other guys, his shooting is above average, his turnover rate is above average, but neither are significantly so. The result is he's an above average efficiency guy putting up big volume, which certainly has value, but offensively it isn't exactly what you want out of a #1 or 2 option. On the defensive end he was great as always, forming an imposing shot blocking duo with Alf, and that's where O'Mara's real value is in my opinion. Offensively he's good, defensively and on the glass he's great.
5.Tyrone Keane C 29 7'0'' 260 B+ A- C A+ B C
-After Alf, the next four bigs really could go in any order. Keane ended up drawing the short straw and ends up sitting here at 5th, but I wouldn't argue anyone who wants to tell me he's a top 2 center. Defensively he's as good as it gets, as not only can he swat shots with the best of them, but his A+ rating tells us he's a damned good positional defender as well. Scoring the ball one would think Keane should do better than he has. His 116.8 oRtg is good, but it's not great, especially when you look at his ratings. Regardless, he's a big plus to have on your roster on both ends, and though his rebounding isn't elite either, his overall game certainly gets the job done.
6.Wilt Chamberlain C 22 7'1'' 275 A- D+ B- A- A A
-Before I say much, I could easily have switched Wilt and Valentine, it's entirely a matter of whether you prefer Wilt's defense or Valentine's superior scoring. This probably looks low, and it is considering the big volume put up, but Wilt simply wasn't that good offensively last year. If he had been, the Wolves would have won a lot more games. Though Wilt scored a lot, his 50.8% TS% is well below average and really held back his overall offensive efficiency. He is an absolute beast on the glass, and a damned fine shot blocker, and there's no doubt he was a top 10 center even as a rookie, so making this list at 6 shouldn't be a disappointment. He'll quickly keep rising up this list as his career progresses I'm sure, but last season he didn't have quite the impact the guys ahead of him on this list did.
7.Durell Valentine C 28 7'0'' 293 B+ C- D B A C
-I've always been sort of curious about what Valentine's value is like around the league. Offensively he's damned good, even if his 52% TS% was subpar last season, his low turnover rate (just 6.2% of possessions) and offensive reboundingmore than makes up for it. On the whole, his net impact offensively and on the glass is a huge positive. There's also the big elephant in the room, his defense, which compared to the other bigs on this list is pretty subpar. It's one thing to be a B defender, it's another not to be able to block shots especially well. Still, I put him this high because even in a down year offensively for him, he was one of the top offensive centers in the league and absolutely cleans up the glass.
8.Bill Russell C 23 6'9'' 223 A- C- B- A- A A
-So here's the thing: Bill Russell was one of the worst offensive centers in the league last year. He was AWFUL at actually putting the ball through the hoop. It's one thing to be inefficient, but the problem guys like Russell create is that not only do they shoot the ball poorly, but they insist on taking a ton of shots. As an A- C- guy, I'd expect him to shoot the ball much better going forward, but I just can't rank him higher than this with how poorly he played on the offensive end last year. Now that we've got that out of the way, lets talk about what makes Bill Russell potentially great. His shot blocking is about as good as anyone's in the league, as well it should be for the all time great, and his rebounding is far and away the best in the league. The combo makes him a huge asset on the defensive end, how far he moves up this list is simply a matter of how much progress he makes offensively.
9.Andryunas Raskauskas C 7'2'' 287 31 B B- C A B- C
-Raskal's a really, really solid starting center in this league. He's not going to wow you offensively, in fact he's quite mediocre on that end of late, and he's not going to do that good of a job on the glass, but he will play top notch defense, and he'll fit into damn near any situation. Unlike most of the guys on this list who probably need to be in very specific roles or situations, Raskal can be plugged in on pretty much any team, inside or out, offensive or defensive, and have a positive impact.
10.Rick Moore C 6'11'' 253 31 B+ C C+ B+ B+ D
-Rick Moore isn't exactly the sexiest pick. here, he's not especially great at a lot of things, but he's just a damned good starting center. Offensively he put up a lot of volume, and did so on a 118 oRtg, which was a better performance than a number of guys on this list. He's a pretty solid rebounder, though not especially great in that regard, and an ok defender who doesn't block shots. He's essentially Valentine without the same level of rebounding. He's a guy who probably doesn't have a ton of value, yet could start for a number of contenders and do a more than fine job.
Honorable Mention:
Andre Drummond - Still real good on defense and the glass.
Woody Sauldsbury - Big volume, but not the most efficient guy.
Maurice Stokes - Essentially Bill Russell, with worse offense.
George Hall - See Maurice Stokes.
Dishonorable Mention:
Patrick Stevens - Absolutely brutal offensively. The Heat have an awesome SF-SG-PG trio, but their awful frontcourt held them back in a big way.
