NOTE: After the discussion, I revised part one after some suggestions and omissions. It is now the top 50.
Here is how the list looks:
The 50 Most Valuable Players in the League
Part 2 (50-1)
50. John Wall PG 36 6'4'' 202 A- A A A C D
49. Mitchell Jordan SG 31 6'6'' 228 B+ A C B- C C
48. Titus Alexander C 24 7'3'' 246 B- C- D A+ B+ B
47..Si Green SG 22 6'2'' 188 C+ A- B- B- C- A
46.George Hall C 32 7'1'' 298 A- F C- A- A C
45.Slick Leonard SG 24 6'3'' 185 C A B A- C+ B
44.Jarrett Jordan SF 28 6'8'' 232 C+ A C+ A- C+ D
43. J.T. Irish SF 26 6'6'' 206 C+ A C A B C
42. Jayson O'Keane PF 26 6'8'' 248 A C+ D+ C B+ D
41. Kevin White SF 25 6'7'' 227 A- A- C+ B B+ D
40. Red Kerr PF 24 6'9'' 233 B+ C C- B+ A- A
39. Jonas Valanciunas PF 33 6'11'' 260 A- B C B A C
38. Quentin Derrick PG 33 5'7'' 160 B A- A- A C D
37. Koni Bruton PF 27 6'9'' 237 B C C B+ A C
36. Sam Jones SF 23 6'5'' 200 B+ C C A- C+ A
35. Frank Ramsey SG 25 6'4'' 200 B- A- B- A C+ C
34. Albert Smith SF 23 6'10'' 225 B+ A- C+ B+ C+ B
33. Julian Rooks PG 27 6'2'' 185 C+ A- A- A- C C
32. Paul Arizin SG 28 6'5'' 203 B+ A B- B+ C B
31. Tanner Thompson SG 25 6'5'' 206 B A B+ A- C B
30. Juno Tremont PF 26 6'9'' 224 A C+ C A- B+ C
29. Cliff Hagan SF 24 6'5'' 215 B+ A- C+ B C+ B
28. Vince McCracken SG 28 6'5'' 203 B+ A- B B C+ B
27. Antonio Ramsey SF 29 6'9'' 266 A- B+ C B B C
26. Rickey Francis PG 29 5'6'' 154 C A C C+ C C
25. Durell Valentine C 26 7'0'' 291 B C- D+ B A
24. Bobby Cook SG 33 5'10'' 155 A- A C+ C C+ D
23. Maurice Stokes C 23 6'8'' 240 B- D+ D+ A A A
23 B. Jason Paulson SF 28 6'4'' 217 B+ A C- A C C
22. Tyrone Keane PF 27 7'0'' 257 B+ B+ C A+ B
21. Randy Sinclair PF 26 7'0'' 221 A- C- C A B+ B
20.Tom Heinsohn PF 22 6'8'' 225 B+ C C A A- A
19. 269 Dolph Schayes PF 28 6'8'' 200 A- C C+ B A B
Starting the second part of our list is Dolph Schayes. With those ratings, one would expect Schayes to be in the top ten, but this league is rapidly adding big men and Schayes isn’t so unique anymore. Dolph is an excellent rebounder and has promise as a scorer, but his lack of shot blocking holds him back a bit. Still a great player though.
18. 274 Sean O'Mara C 30 7'1'' 320 B+ C D+ A- A B
There is no denying it—Sean O’Mara is a stud. He can score, defend, rebound, and make free throws. He’s pretty much everything you ask for out of a big. It’s amazing that he’s just # 18 on this list, but there are plenty of other great bigs and budding young players. O’Mara’s growing age and pretty big contract hold him back.
17. 423 Ben Rollins SG 29 6'5'' 221 A B+ C+ B C+ C
Where did this guy go? Rollins has become the forgotten man in Canada. Once heralded as the next BBS superstar, Rollins is now a TO prone gunner who can still score with the best of them. He’s wasting away on DJ’s crappy team though.
16. 613 K.C. Jones PG 24 6'1'' 203 B B A A- C B
K.C. came into the league with really mediocre ratings and has quickly proven his doubters wrong. He is a great scorer who can also pass and defend with the best of them. If he still has some of that 100 potential in him, he can be an all league point guard for a while.
15. Tracy Parker SG 27 6'6'' 212 B+ A B B+ C- B
Probably the second most valuable shooting guard in the league, Parker is lighting it up again this year after he had a bit of an off-season last year. Parker is your prototypical stud shooting guard who can do it all. Really no weakness in his offensive game.
14. 532 Christian Gola C 27 6'11'' 292 A- C+ C- A- B- C
Where the fuck did Gola come from? When I had him last, he was a nice player (with the same ratings) who couldn’t put up more than 18-19 a game. Gola has emerged into a legitimate post threat who can score with the best of them. He’s also a great shot blocker, which makes him unbelievably valuable.
13. 391 Elgin Baylor SF 22 6'5'' 225 A- C+ B+ B+ A- A
A player who will probably rise up this list, Baylor has the skill set to be a top 5 player in BBS for a long time. Right now, his lack of an outside shot keeps him from becoming great. If that shot can improve, Baylor will be a superstar, but right now he is just a very good role player.
12. 111 Bob Cousy PG 28 6'1'' 175 A- B A+ A C
It’s odd to see someone with perfect ratings not even make the top 10, but Cousy—at least to me—has not struck me as special. He’s amazing, no doubt, but he hasn’t carried the Hawks to a great record or scored huge points. A great, great player who probably has not reached an elite level.
11. 144 J.D. Quincy SF 26 6'5'' 225 A- A- B+ B+ B+ C
Quincy has definitely taken a hit since being proclaimed as the most valuable player in the league a few seasons ago. While he is still a great player, he no longer looks like last versions Kevin Durant. He’s inefficient as a scorer and is turnover prone. Definitely needs to be on the right team to thrive I think. Some AC attention would help too.
10. 421 Stephen Flint PF 30 6'11'' 235 A- D D- A A- C
Flint’s a great, great player who does just about everything you need a big man to do. He’s an awesome rebounder and great shot blocker + post defender. Unfortunately, I’m partial to bigs who make free throws, and Flint definitely does not do that. Really hurts his efficiency.
9. 416 Bob Petit PF 24 6'9'' 211 A- C- D+ A A B
As I said, it gets hard here. 24 year old A-/A/A big at just # 8? Petit is another big who can pretty much do it all, is young, and has a create future ahead of him. The only thing keeping him from climbing this list is his lack of shot blocking, which hurts him in comparison to the other top big men.
8. 479 Omar Green SG 24 6'8'' 183 B- A+ D B+ D+ B
As long as the Grizz GM can keep it in his pants, I’ll say some nice things about Green. Despite ratings that leave a lot to be desired, Green is everything you want out of an outside shooting guard. He lights it up, never turns it over, and shoots great %’s. He’s also 24 and will probably be dominating for another decade.
7. 201 Purnell Jackson PG 23 6'7'' 210 A- B A- B+ C C
Purnell might have uglier ratings than Cousy, but he’s 23 and has to be considered elite. He has an MVP award already secured, and is one of the best players in the league. His value might be taking a hit because he is not an option in Chicago’s offense, but he is a modern day Penny Hardaway who has few flaws.
6. 34 Alf Sjoberg C 28 7'0'' 305 A- C+ D+ A- A C
Alf is just so damn good. He doesn’t always post the flashiest numbers, but he has had some huge playoff series and is widely considered as one of the best bigs in the league. His C+ outside is a huge asset, and obviously his defense and rebounding are unmatched.
5. 160 Jacquez Knight PG 28 6'3'' 192 A- A A A- C C
Knight could easily be # 1 on this list, too. I just feel like his value has hit a bit of a cold streak since people do not tend to talk about him much. Still, anytime you have a PG that can average 30/10 and get 3 steals a game, he’s in consideration for the most valuable guy in the league.
4. 00 Evan Dickerson C 29 7'0'' 231 A- C D+ A- A- C
Dickerson is Flint on steroids. A big without flaws, one could easily make a case that Dickerson belongs in the top 5 or even at # 1. Really, all the guys from 6 down to 1 have legitimate cases. Dickerson can do it all—score, defend, rebound, win, etc. Great player.
3. 550 Bill Russell C 21 6'9'' 220 B D+ B- A- A A
Russell obviously isn’t there yet, but there’s every indication that he’s going to be one of the best in the league. He already has the shot blocking and rebounding of the other top bigs, and judging by CC’s scouting report, his inside is going to get there. Russell could be a 28/13 guy pretty soon, and his handles are a nice added bonus as well.
2. 157 Bradley Barker PG 23 6'0'' 185 B- A+ A B+ D+ B
Yup, I’m opting to put two non-bigs at # 2 and # 1 because there are so many good PF’s and C’s coming into the league. With such a shift, the other positions become all the more important. Barker is the best point guard in the league right now and is averaging 30/10. That’s nuts. He’s great, and with one or two more defensive upgrades he’ll be unmatched.
1. 382 Dean Hollis SF 25 6'10'' 223 B+ A C A- B+ B
Hollis is still my favorite player in the league. He’s one of the few wings who is really elite, and he’s not going to go away anytime soon. He’s an exceptional scorer who scores efficiently, a great defender, and an awesome rebounder. There isn’t a player like him in the league right now, so I think he is the one franchise guy without a comparable player in which to argue with.
NOTE: After the discussion, I revised part one after some suggestions and omissions. It is now the top 50.
