Christian Keck
Position: PG
Age: 21
Height: 6'6"
Weight: 180 pounds
West Liberty University (DII)
Background:
Christian Keck is one of the most intriguing prospects in the 2021 BBS draft. He had an incredibly successful career for the West Liberty Hilltoppers, a Division II powerhouse. The high-flying Hilltoppers put up astounding numbers over the course of the season, averaging 113 PPG. Keck averaged 17 PPG for the Hilltoppers along with an astounding 11.4 APG and 8.3 RPG.
Keck attended a very small high school in Ohio and was vastly ignored by Division I programs despite average over 30 PPG in high school. He only managed to garner a single Division I offer from Tulsa but opted to continue his college career at West Liberty University (WV). He entered the starting line-up just fourteen games into his freshman season at the ripe young age of 17 and never relinquished his position.
Strengths:
Keck is an excellent leader on the floor and has always displayed superior court vision, averaging double-digit assists in his junior and senior season. He is very smooth with the basketball which also allows him to drive to the basket with relative success. He has a very nice mid-range game and his basketball IQ really shines with his offensive repertoire. He is not a knock-down three-point shooter but can get hot from deep. Keck is certainly a hustle player and was an excellent rebounder, using his long frame to get solid positioning over larger players. He averaged over a steal and a block a game as a senior, improving his defensive performance vastly over his career. He was a complete liability defensively during his freshman season but worked hard to improve.
Weaknesses:
Keck still is far from an excellent defender. He isn't an exceptional athlete which allows smaller, quicker PG's to take advantage of his lanky frame. He struggled against smaller, stronger guards that could beat him off-the-dribble. Keck, while an extremely efficient scorer, does have an awkward shooting motion that worries some scouts. He also certainly needs to add some strength and bulk to his relatively thin and lanky frame if he is going to excel at the next level.
However, the biggest unknown regarding Keck is the level of competition that he has faced throughout his career. He dominated at the lower levels of Ohio high school basketball and then excelled greatly during higher level Division II competition. However, scouts certainly know that Division II competition is a far cry from, say, the Big East or ACC. Keck's relative under-the-radar career makes him one of the most intriguing but mysterious in the draft. On paper, he has all of the tools to be an excellent, unique PG in BBS but the competition on said paper leaves a lot to be desired.
Outlook:
Some scouts absolutely love Keck while others think his awkward frame and shot won't translate to an extreme level of competition. Some scouts see Keck as a top ten talent while others think he will be a risky late first rounder. One scout recently graded him as low as a D defender while another felt he was a B defender. He is a hard worker, a good leader, and a very talented basketball player but this entire draft process will be a big shock for the kid. Many conflicting reports on this one. Big mystery but very intriguing.
