Greeme is a polarizing GM in the league. Some like him, while others think that he doesn't do a very good job. He's a newer GM, but he knows his way around the league.
1) Let's start with your team. You started the season 7-1, but since then, you went 2-11 heading into Day 31 - what's wrong with your team?
If I knew I would fix it. Seriously though, I don't think my team is as good as we started or as bad as we are currently playing. At the beginning we had a lot of home games and as things have evened out that has affected my record. We do have a positive point differential even though we are 9-12 so I have hope that my team is better than its record. At this point I am going to be experimenting with dc changes because I think that my team has a lot of talent.
2) You acquired LeBron James for some picks, are you going to attempt to go for broke and trade off your young talent for veterans to make a push?
No. I tried to get Lopez but that didn't work out. I was willing to give away my picks but didn't really want to trade players. I like my young players and think that they can be a solid core for the future. Also capwise it won't be easy to make a trade. The picks I gave away were kind of meh in my opinion. If I didn't give Portland back its pick they would have been 12-15 imo. The Hornets are in their cy next year if they don't make the playoffs and if they do make the playoffs this year there is no reason they should be worse next year. The Pistons picks for the next 2 year will be in the 20 range imo. Worst case scenario Lebron will retire or won't resign and I will have Jay, Knight, Jordan and Walker as a base + cap space. I would rather take a chance that the best player in the game will make me better than hoping that picks in the 15-20 range do so. Remember that Kobe and Wallace hung around until 37 and there is no real reason to think that Lebron will retire. Hopefully he will give me a decent resign offer but if not, that's BBS.
3) If you could add any player in the league right now to your current team to put you over the top, who would it be?
Derrick Favors or John Wall. I think that Favors is awesome and would let me move Lebron to sf. But then what would I do with Jarrett? I would probably take Wall. I think that pg is the most important position in BBS so I would take the best pg.
4) If you could trade Jarrett Jordan for Mitchell Jordan, would you?
Both developed very nicely. I wouldn't do the trade just because I like Knight at sg. Looking at their ratings I like Jarrett better because of his defense. Also in the draft notes it said that Mitchell was a poor man to man defender. On the other hand he was on the all defensive team. I think that at this point Mitchell is better but that could change, and hopefully will, next tc.
5) Where do you rank yourself as a GM in this league - Do you feel that you've done a good job?
It is kind of hard to rank myself. I tend to get bored easily and sometimes trade when there is no reason to. I never saw the actual fbb game and I think that would help me understand some things a little more. Also I have a hard time tanking. I really hate losing. It seems that the best way to build a good team long term is to tank, get a high pick and get lucky and have that pick work out. Look at DJ. He has had a pretty solid team the last few years but imagine if Wiggins turned into Lopez or Favors. Nobody can say that Wiggins was a bad choice. It just didn't work out. Let me put it this way, there are a lot of gms who are content to make the playoffs once every four years. I am willing to take risks to make my team better now even if it might make me susceptible to getting cyd. I won't say exactly where but I think that I am but I will say that I think there are a lot of gms worse than me.
6) Who do you think is the best GM in the league and why?
I haven't really been here long enough to know. The three best teams since I have been here have been the Bulls, Suns and Grizzlies. Coincidentally (??)they have Perry, Favors and Barnes. Obviously that can't be the only reason for their team's success but it didn't hurt. I like the job Jordan and Broph have done this year and I think that Lums has done a great job since he has been here. He took a risk on Wallace that paid off. Some people said he would get cyd after trading off Rose but it seems clear now that they are wrong.
7) You created Jay Johnson and Assaf Schayes in the last draft. Are you happy with how they turned out?
I was probably the only one that had Johnson ranked above Carl in the draft. I like how Jay turned out, just like I planned him except for shooting a little more and turning the ball over too much. Assaf was supposed to have a little more potential but he is playing very well. Wish I had him but Skillz keeps ignoring my pms.
8) Manas was shopping your 2021 1st as if it would be a top-5 pick - do you find that insulting?
Nah, if he managed to convince somebody that it is worth something, more power to him. Kind of silly if somebody believed him though. As I said above even in my worst case scenario I will have Jay, Knight, Jordan and TJ + plenty of cap space. Also, If people think that I will be bad, it makes my other picks that much more valuable.
9) Which trade that you've made do you most regret?
Anybody that trades obviously will find something to regret. Usually when a gm gives up a young player who develops well. The worst trade I made was
Denver trade:
Ricky Rubio
Jason Terry
Alvin Williams
Hornets trade:
Jeff Green
Wesley Johnson
Mladen Sekularac
I hated having Terry on my team. He made 15+ mil and was horrid. I had no cap room and wanted to get him off my team. I also had decided to play Curry at the point so it seemed obvious that I should get rid of Rubio. Wes was a high pick that never became as good as I thought he would. Spencer told me not to do this. Should have listened. But I really hated Terry.
10) Finally, who do you think are the top-5 players in the league and what sort of a package would you give up to acquire one of them?
The top 5 as of today are LBJ, Wall, Favors, Jones and Barnes. Honorable mention Gilchrist, Curry, Randolph.
Not the most valuable 5 or the 5 I would start a team with but they are the top 5 players in the league today. It is generally hard to match contracts for top players. In theory I would package 2 of Johnson, Knight and Jordan but I would have trouble matching contracts and it would hurt my depth.
