Anthony Johnson
Height: 6'1''
Weight: 175
Position: PG
Age: 21
College: Niagara University
Bio: Born in Plainfield, NJ, this handsy guard looks to be one of the better players out of the MAAC in a long time. Regularly ranked in the top 3 in the conference for assists and assist-to-turnover ratio. Asked why he chose Niagara, "I chose Niagara because they have a great coaching staff and the people on campus are terrific. I liked the location of the university, too, allowing me to get a great education.”
Strengths: Hands, hands, and more hands. Unlike many of his fellow point guards coming into the league, he will not have turnover problems. He's also quite quick. This leads to a lot of steals. In fact, he lead the NCAA in steals this past season, registering 3.4 steals per game. However, the quickness does not lead to more baskets. Another plus to his game is his rebounding. He increased his totals each year at NU, ending with 5 rebounds per game in his senior year.
Weaknesses: Not a scorer. He is more of a game manager and looks to help others before himself. His shot is pretty broken. He shot well below 30% from the behind the arc and under 40% from the field in his career at NU. He is a solid free throw shooter though, above 75% for his career. His man on defense is neither a strength nor weakness. He gambles (and gets) a lot of steals, but he also gets burned every once in awhile.
Outlook: He could potentially be a lotto pick if a team has scoring in other places. He should be solid starter regardless. The low turnovers as a rookie should entice everyone. Think Nick Calathes with no jump shot, but more steals.
