Douglas Washington
College: Indiana
Height: 6'7
Weight: 210lbs
Age: 20
Position: SG
Ratings: B B C+ C+ C A
College Career:
Washington was frequently in the headlines in his college career. However, he was in the news for all of the wrong reasons. Washington frequently feuded with his coach which lead to multiple indefinite suspensions in his two seasons. It became obvious that he wasn't going to be returning early on into his sophomore season.
On the court, Washington showed he could take over games from time to time. He was on of the most explosive offensive players in the country and scored over 20 points several times in his college career. It should be noted that when things weren't going his way, Washington would often give up or pout resulting little production stat wise. These were the games that caused the multiple altercations between Washington and the coaching staff. Most scouts find these maturity or emotional issues as a major red flag. They could result in Washington never being able to successfully play at the next level because of his lack of mental toughness. Should Washington fall into the right situation where the coach gains his trust and brings him around the right way, there is no doubt he will not be one of the ten best scorers in the league.
Pros:
Washington is an excellent scorer. He can finish around the basket well and has a tremendous jump shot. He has unlimited range and is actually a much better three point shooter than midrange/foul shooter. Washington has an amazingly explosive first step which allows him to frequently burn defenders, get to the basket, and draw fouls. If you haven't figured it out by now, Washington is an incredible athlete with a ton of potential.
Cons:
Washington's biggest flaw is obviously his head issues. They lead to his game falling apart with too much frequency. Some sort of correction is needed for Washington to have any chance at success. Also, Washington isn't particularly strong or a good defender. He tends to be careless with the ball from time to time. None of these issues come up when you talk to scouts because they are all so concerned on whether or not Washington can handle the pressure at the next level. This could mean one of two things. Either his defense, strength and handling are not really concerns or scouts are overlooking some other flaws that Washington possesses.
Overall:
Washington has the talent to be a star scorer. He will be able to get to the basket and draw a lot of fouls. He also spaces the court out because of his very deep shooting range. These two facts will make it difficult for him to not be a great scorer. All of that aside, the kid has the potential of being a bust because of his attitude. This is the major concern of scouts should be.
