Age: 22
Height: 6'7"
Weight: 222 pounds
College: Oregon
Position-Small Forward
Ratings: C+ C C- A C+ B
Breakdown:
Inside:
Nelson is very athletic, but, he has no real ability to score inside at all, He is the last guy you want to count on to score at the hoop, as he has no moves whatsoever other than trying to outmuscle his opponent. He is a high flyer though, and pretty strong for a Small Forward, just dont expect him to try to do anything at the hoop
Outside:
Nelson has an excellent jump shot, but, no interest in shooting the three ball, he doesnt have the range at all. His free throw shooting is superb though, making him a weapon near the end of the game, actually, thats where he does a lot of his scoring, as the focus is to get him the ball. 88% from the foul line is very impressive in college. his 1 for 7 mark on threes over the season, not so much
Handling: Nelson won't turn the ball over ever really, as he is extremely safe with the balll on offense. He isnt going to make the amazing pass on offense, he would rather make the safe pass out top, then let the Point guard try that stuff. If the pass is easy, he can make it, and he is very very quick, even at his 6'7 size.
Defense: This is where Nelson stands out amongst the crowd. He can guard literally any position, Center, Power Forward, Small Forward, Shooting Guard, even Point Guard if you want. he is extremely quick despite his size, and his positional defense is outstanding. he can get you maybe a steal and a half a game, and a block, nothing amazing statistically, but, positionally he can cover everybody, and do it very well. This is where he will make his living, as a 6th man off the bench, in the playoffs to cover an opposing teams best scorer and lock them down.
Rebounding: Nothing spectacular to see here, he is a nice rebounder, but, not amazing. He tends to find himself out of position for defensive rebounding more so than offensive, since he is so involved defensively, and so uninvolved offensively, it allows him to stake out position for the offense rebound...of course, he has no idea what to do if he gets one, but thats for another day. He played a lot of Power Forward and Center in college, and that leads many people to think he is a better rebounder than he really is.
Potential:
Coming into College Nelson was considered an elite prospect, he just needed time to develop his overall game, however, his athleticism was superb. Coming out of college...well, after four years the coaches have seen pretty much no improvement to his offensive game, which obviously is pushing him down draft boards. However, his defense is second to none, and he has an excellent work ethic, even if his inability to improve offensively would suggest otherwise. He will never be even an average offensive player at the next level, but he very well could be a top 3 defender.
College Stats:
7.4 Points 9.3 rebounds 1.6 steals 1.1 blocks
