Eastern Conference Team Grades
This sequence of articles will do something we all love to do: grade. This grade is not a GM ranking, nor is it a power ranking. Rather, this grade is simply designated based on how well off a franchise currently is.
What will be factored in:
1. Current Roster—how good is it?
2. Future—picks, youth, etc.
3. GM—Will they be able to climb out of the hole eventually?
So, without further ado, your EC team grades:
Boston Celtics:
GM: JEFF
Roster:
146 Yao Ming C 34 7'6'' 313 C+ C D- A- B- D
208 Cheikh Samb C 29 7'1'' 253 C D D- B C F
526 Greg Monroe PF 24 6'10'' 256 B C- B- B B+ B
163 Ian Mahinmi PF 27 6'11'' 235 C D D+ A A- C
503 Vernon Macklin PF 28 6'9'' 230 B- D- D B C+ D
216 Yi Jianlian SF 26 7'0'' 247 B A- C- B- B- C
262 Nicolas Batum SF 25 6'8'' 209 B- B+ C- A C C
292 Ryan Anderson SF 26 6'10'' 243 C+ A- C- B- C C
484 Tony Mitchell SF 22 6'8'' 216 A C D C+ C A
317 Dalton Pepper SG 23 6'5'' 215 B C+ C B- D+ C
485 John Jenkins SG 22 6'5'' 190 C A C- B D B
172 Lorenzo Brown SG 22 6'4'' 185 B- B- C C+ C- B
581 Tyshawn Taylor PG 24 6'3'' 180 B- C B- A C A
265 D.J. Richardson PG 23 6'3'' 200 C B C B+ C B
558 Joe Jackson PG 21 5'11'' 170 B+ C- B- C D- C
Grade: B-. After a solid run with Zach Randolph and Boris Diaw, Jeff has finally decided that he should rebuild. I am assuming that he will trade off Yi, Batum, Mahinmi, etc. for expirings and then tank. If he does this, the Celtics should be in respectable shape in a few years. They don't have great young talent or picks, but they have a solid start to the rebuild process. Tony Mitchell, Jeff's auto'd 1st, looks like he could be a Demar
Derozan type.
Miami Heat
GM: Bryan
Roster:
647 Dwight Howard C 28 6'11'' 255 A- D+ C A+ A+ C
585 Rashad McCants SG 30 6'4'' 211 A- A- C B+ C- D
Grade: C+. Sure, Dwight is great, but i'm not really sure what he's doing on that roster. Bryan was not active enough in free agency and is currently stuck between rebuilding and competing. The Heat do have all of their picks and are not in bad shape by any stretch, but I'm not too sure what they are doing at this point. Bryan has not shown us much, so I am keeping this at a C+ for now.
New Jersey Nets
GM: Erbes
Roster:
311 Jerome Jordan C 28 7'0'' 245 B D F+ B- B- D
279 Al Jefferson PF 29 6'10'' 271 A- C- C A A- C
286 Jared Sullinger PF 23 6'9'' 265 B+ D D C+ B B
178 Craig Smith PF 30 6'7'' 271 B- C- D+ B C+ C
270 Carmelo Anthony SF 30 6'8'' 240 A- A- C B+ B- D
473 Danny Granger SF 31 6'8'' 228 C+ A- C B C C
200 Luis Scola SF 34 6'9'' 248 B C C A- C+ D
346 Caron Butler SG 34 6'7'' 228 B+ A- C- B- C D
537 James Anderson SG 25 6'6'' 202 B- B B- C+ C+ C
361 Jordan Hamilton SG 24 6'7'' 213 B- B+ C C D+ C
495 Nolan Dennis SG 23 6'5'' 185 C+ B+ C- C+ C- C
506 Chris Paul PG 29 6'0'' 185 A- B A+ C+ D+ C
543 Louis Williams PG 27 6'2'' 178 C+ B- B- C+ D- C
Grade: B+. The Nets have been great for a long time, but the team could have been even better had Erbes made the proper moves. He was too content with the Noah-Melo-Paul core, and did not put enough around them. They should again be able to contend for a title this year, but they still have the same problems: poor defense and no depth. I have a feeling Erbes will hold onto this team for a bit too long, and won't be able to maximize the value of his studs. I'd retool in a season or two.
New York Knicks
GM: Me
Roster:
612 Al Horford C 28 6'10'' 248 B C C- A B+ C
20 Timofey Mozgov C 28 7'1'' 250 C+ D+ F+ A- B+ D
188 Josh Smith PF 28 6'9'' 244 B+ C+ B- A- B+ C
481 Tayshaun Prince SF 34 6'10'' 215 B+ C+ B A- C- C
205 Dion Waiters SG 22 6'3'' 220 B+ C D+ C+ D C
563 Sergio Rodriguez PG 28 6'3'' 177 B+ A- A- C+ C C
521 Omar Cook PG 32 6'1'' 190 C A B B- C- C
569 Sebastian Telfair PG 29 6'0'' 172 C+ B- A B+ D C
Grade: C. Roster is okay, no future picks. Seems to be the usual situation for me. I'll do a conventional rebuild soon and get my picks back and then build the team back up. The team is not in great shape right now but I am normally able to work well with few assets.
Orlando Magic
GM: Manas
Roster:
150 Rick Rickert C 31 6'11'' 225 C+ C+ C B+ C+ D
143 Joel Przybilla C 35 7'2'' 260 C C- D+ B B- C
347 Markus Kennedy C 23 6'9'' 230 B C- D C+ B- B
217 Brendan Haywood C 34 7'0'' 273 C C- F+ B- B D
635 Lamar Odom PF 34 6'10'' 235 B- B C+ B- B- C
396 Carl Landry PF 31 6'9'' 254 B+ C D+ B- B D
493 Delvon Roe PF 24 6'7'' 223 C+ B- C B- C+ C
427 Jamal Coombs-McDaniel PF 25 6'7'' 210 B- C+ C C+ C D
369 Thabo Sefolosha SF 30 6'5'' 222 B- B B A C B
436 Jereme Richmond SF 22 6'7'' 220 B C D+ B+ C+ B
560 Russell Westbrook SG 25 6'3'' 196 A- B A- C+ C B
293 Gilbert Arenas SG 32 6'3'' 204 B- A- C+ C+ D+ C
395 Qyntel Woods SG 33 6'8'' 230 B- B C- B+ C C
583 Brandon Knight PG 23 6'3'' 194 B- A- B+ A- C B
Grade: D+. Manas is a good GM but he does not have much to work with right now. His roster is mediocre at best and he doesn't have any great young pieces besides Knight. He should probably tear it down and rebuild. They don't have many bigs and have few players of value. Westbrook has not lived up to expectations.
Philadelphia 76ers
GM: The North
Roster:
465 Enes Kanter C 22 6'10'' 245 B C D+ B+ A- B
409 Ryan Kelly PF 23 6'10'' 230 B- B D- C+ C+ B
445 Quincy Miller SF 21 6'10'' 225 B C A- C+ B- A
364 Travis Outlaw SF 29 6'9'' 210 B B+ C- C+ C C
423 Josh Howard SF 34 6'7'' 211 C A- B B C D
550 Al-Farouq Aminu SF 24 6'9'' 217 B- C+ C B B C
535 Kris Joseph SF 26 6'7'' 207 B+ C D A- C+ C
587 LeBryan Nash SF 20 6'8'' 220 B+ C C C C B
290 Kenny Boynton SG 24 6'2'' 170 A- C+ C B C- C
259 Tomas Satoransky SG 21 6'6'' 190 C+ B- B- C C+ C
449 Tyreke Evans PG 25 6'6'' 223 A- B+ B+ B- C B
339 Maalik Wayns PG 23 6'1'' 190 B+ B- B B+ D B
256 Ryan Harrow PG 22 5'11'' 165 C+ B B B C- A
586 Phil Pressey PG 22 5'10'' 165 C B+ B- C D- C
Grade: B+. TheNorth has a very solid young core--I am just a bit reserved about the GM. Wayns, Harrow, Evans, and Miller form a really nice group, but TheNorth is going to have to make a trade to get better/different young pieces soon. Wayns and Evans will never work as a dominant backcourt because the players are too similar. Harrow is good but expendable. Miller's value is probably going to be at an all-time high right now before people realize he won't be able to sim. Get on that!
Washington Wizards
GM: Andrew
Roster:
134 David West C 33 6'10'' 246 B+ C D- B- B+ C
562 Trey Thompkins C 24 6'10'' 248 B C C B+ A- C
515 Tiny Gallon C 23 6'9'' 296 B+ D- D- C C+ C
381 Ed Davis PF 25 6'9'' 225 B- D+ D+ A- C+ C
168 Taj Gibson PF 29 6'9'' 226 C+ C- D A- A- C
161 Hunter Michelson PF 21 6'10'' 210 C B- D B- C+ B
443 Jordan Price SF 19 6'6'' 218 A- C C B C+ B
320 Marvin Williams SF 28 6'9'' 236 B B- C- A- C+ C
376 Xavier Henry SF 23 6'6'' 220 B C+ D+ B- C B
403 James Harden SG 25 6'5'' 224 B A- C+ B- C- C
556 Reggie Bullock SG 22 6'7'' 190 C A- C- A- C B
475 Rajon Rondo PG 28 6'1'' 180 B B- A+ A C C
557 Aaron Brooks PG 29 6'0'' 162 C A A- C D+ D
Grade: D. This team is going no where. They have one player of value--Rondo--who probably won't net Andrew as much as he thinks. Everyone else is either old or a backup type. They do have all of their picks so they should be able to recover. However, right now this team is a 35 win team with very little existing value on it.
Atlanta Hawks
GM: Styro
Roster:
234 Festus Ezeli C 22 6'11'' 255 B- C- C- B B+ C
623 Fab Melo C 22 7'0'' 274 B D D B+ B B
245 Yannick Driesen C 25 7'1'' 230 C+ C C- C+ B C
632 Blake Griffin PF 25 6'10'' 260 A- C- C- B+ A- A
456 Luke Cothron PF 22 6'8'' 205 C+ B- C- C+ C+ C
476 Vladimir Dasic PF 25 6'9'' 225 C C- C- B C C
394 Rodney Williams SF 22 6'7'' 200 B- B- C B+ C C
617 Cameron Clark SF 22 6'7'' 180 C B- D- C+ C+ C
170 Jason Morris SF 24 6'8'' 225 C+ C D B+ C C
260 Anthony Marshall SG 23 6'4'' 188 B+ C C+ B C D
354 Joe Johnson SG 33 6'8'' 225 C+ A- C C C D
242 Andre Dawkins SG 23 6'4'' 190 C+ C+ C- C C- C
282 Vander Blue SG 21 6'3'' 185 B C- D+ B+ C B
634 Derrick Rose PG 25 6'3'' 200 A- B- A- B C D
598 Ramon Sessions PG 28 6'3'' 190 C+ B- B+ B C- D
Grade: C. Even though Griffen suddenly looks good, Melo's poor TC's set this team back a lot. Even if Melo recovers, he is no longer going to be the star that we once thought he would be. Derrick Rose, after a huge season two years ago, has regressed and is not an elite point guard by any stretch. I think the Hawks core was a bit overrated, and I don't see much upside here. It should be interesting to see which direction in which Sytro decides to go.
Charlotte Bobcats
GM: Hype
Roster:
155 JaVale McGee C 26 7'0'' 245 B+ C- D+ B B+ C
330 Aaric Murray C 24 6'10'' 250 C+ B- D- B B- C
332 Evan Anderson C 22 6'11'' 235 C+ D+ C B- C+ B
118 Anthony Randolph PF 25 6'10'' 214 B C+ B- B+ B B
206 Zach Randolph PF 33 6'9'' 256 A- B- F+ C A- D
408 Alex Oriakhi PF 24 6'9'' 242 C+ D D- B+ B+ D
272 Brandan Wright SF 26 6'9'' 215 B C+ C A- B D
549 Shannon Brown SG 28 6'4'' 217 B B B+ B+ C B
565 Ricky Rubio PG 25 6'4'' 189 B- A- A+ A- C- B
Grade: B+. To me, this is the typical Hype team. A very good team that will win 55 and lose in the second round. Randolph is their one big scoring threat, but the Bobcats do not have the depth to compete with the elite teams in the league. Still, Rubio is a stud and they have the shot blocking that many other teams covet. If Hype can deal for some depth or deal Brown for some smaller contracts, the Bobcats may be a title contender. Regardless, they are in a better position then most.
Chicago Bulls
GM: Play
Roster:
620 Andrew Bogut C 29 7'0'' 245 B+ C D A C+ C
618 Emeka Okafor C 31 6'10'' 261 B- D+ C A- A- B
356 Derrick Caracter PF 26 6'8'' 275 A- D D- C+ B C
463 Larry Sanders PF 26 6'10'' 238 B- D D A- B D
536 Wally Judge PF 24 6'8'' 230 B D D B- B B
573 Perry Jones SF 23 7'0'' 230 B+ A- B A- B- B
522 Gordon Hayward SF 24 6'8'' 210 B- A+ B+ C+ C+ B
433 Jared Dudley SG 29 6'7'' 235 C+ A- C- B+ C C
626 Chris Singleton SG 24 6'8'' 215 B+ B C C+ C+ B
416 Renaldas Seibutis SG 29 6'6'' 185 B- B+ A- C+ C C
307 Darius Smith SG 23 6'2'' 180 C+ B- C+ B- D- C
538 Jrue Holiday PG 24 6'3'' 183 C+ B+ A A- D+ C
Grade: A. Play has done an excellent job again and should be good for a long, long time (well, not really considering play will inexplicably rebuild for no reason in 3 years). Anyways, the Bulls are a legitimate title contender with legitimate young pieces. Okafor and Bogut is a good but not great FC, but Hayward and Jones should provide enough from the 2/3 to win the eastern conference. If play can AC Jones and Hayward they will be impossible to stop.
Cleveland Cavs
GM: Tiger
Roster:
284 Jordan Williams C 23 6'10'' 260 B- D D C B C
351 Henry Sims C 24 6'10'' 225 C+ D+ D- B- C+ C
371 Gerald Wallace SF 32 6'7'' 227 A C+ C- A- B D
413 Kobe Bryant SF 36 6'7'' 215 B+ A B- A B- D
589 C.J. Leslie SF 22 6'8'' 210 B C+ C A- C+ B
328 John Salmons SG 34 6'7'' 210 C+ A C B- C- D
474 Marcus Banks PG 32 6'2'' 202 C A- A- A+ C C
554 Marcus Williams PG 28 6'3'' 205 C+ C+ A C+ C- C
540 Steve Blake PG 34 6'3'' 172 C B B C+ D- F
Grade: C. Talk about holding on to your assets for too long! G-Wall is now 32 and Kobe is 36. I doubt Tiger gets a lot for either of them. Regardless, the Cavs now have all of their own picks and Tiger is a master rebuilder. They should be good in a couple of years, but Cleveland will go through the usual stages of three tanking years before that happens.
Detroit Pistons
GM: Andy
Roster:
227 Eddy Curry C 31 7'0'' 294 B C- D A- A C
432 Ekpe Udoh PF 27 6'10'' 240 B- D+ C A- B C
366 P.J. Tucker SF 29 6'5'' 228 B+ C+ D A+ B C
590 Wesley Witherspoon SF 24 6'8'' 186 C A- D- B+ C C
577 Michael Redd SG 35 6'6'' 225 B- A- C B- C D
500 LaceDarius Dunn SG 27 6'4'' 200 C+ A C- B C C
223 Manny Harris SG 25 6'5'' 190 C B- C+ B- C C
454 Brandon Jennings PG 25 6'1'' 175 C+ A A A- C C
224 Demetri McCamey PG 25 6'3'' 210 C B+ B C+ D- C
Grade: B. Well this team got average pretty fast. Curry and Jennings still form one of the best point guard/center connections in the league, but the Pistons have little else to offer. They have nice role players in Udoh, Tucker, and Redd but a lack of depth and value with some of these guys will limit the Pistons to a 3 or 4 seed. And the future? Well, it's just Jennings right now.
Indiana Pacers
GM: Mops
Roster:
553 John Wall PG 24 6'4'' 195 A- A- A+ A C+ B
Grade: C-. Mops, do something with your team. Wall is great but he's wasting away on this team. Mops refuses to put a good core around JW and I will not grade this team higher until he does. Ibaka and Blair are nice role players who would ideally serve as great 6th men or decent starters in an outside offense. The problem with the Pacers is that they have very little wing help to make that happen. They need to start overpaying for mediocre wings--offering 2 and 3 year contracts to backups for no reason--to increase their flexibility. They could use a second star as well.
Milwaukee Bucks
GM: Broph
Roster:
142 Andris Biedrins C 28 6'11'' 248 C D C- B+ A- C
643 Kenny Frease C 23 7'0'' 275 B D+ C- C+ B+ D
215 Pau Gasol PF 34 7'0'' 232 A- C C+ B B+ C
203 Miles Plumlee PF 24 6'10'' 228 C+ C C- A- B+ C
233 Carlos Boozer PF 32 6'9'' 278 B+ C D- C B+ D
496 JaMychal Green PF 24 6'9'' 225 B- D D- B- B B
240 DeMar DeRozan SF 25 6'7'' 232 A B C- C+ C+ C
572 Paul George SF 24 6'8'' 216 B B+ C- A- C+ C
400 Yaroslav Korolev SF 27 6'9'' 206 C+ C+ C- A C+ C
604 Dante Taylor SF 23 6'8'' 215 B D+ D- B- B B
468 Josh Selby SG 22 6'1'' 181 A- A- B- A- C- B
385 Nick Calathes PG 25 6'5'' 190 C A A- B- D+ B
336 Terone Johnson PG 22 6'2'' 180 C C B B- D+ C
Grade: B. The team is okay, but Broph should be able to make the moves to make them elite soon enough. Derozan is a legitimate superstar even though he may not be given the credit. Selby is a good player, but someone who probably will never sim to his ratings. The Bucks don't have much in terms of a future or picks--George is already overpaid--but I have enough trust in Broph to dig the team out of this mini hole.
Toronto Raptors
GM: DJ
Roster:
607 Greg Smith C 23 6'11'' 252 B- D+ D B+ B- C
478 Dexter Pittman C 26 6'10'' 293 B+ D D+ C+ C+ C
331 Mouphtaou Yarou C 23 6'10'' 243 B- D D- A- B- B
285 Aziz N'Diaye C 25 7'0'' 240 C+ D+ D A- C C
218 Andrei Kirilenko PF 33 6'9'' 235 B C C+ A A- D
490 Zeke Marshall PF 23 7'0'' 235 C D C B C B
499 Jeffery Taylor SF 25 6'7'' 202 B C+ C B+ C B
410 Bill Walker SF 27 6'6'' 230 A- B- D- B- C+ D
631 Hollis Thompson SF 23 6'7'' 210 C+ B+ C- C- C+ C
648 Kevin Durant SG 26 6'9'' 232 B- A+ C B- C B
235 Terrico White SG 24 6'5'' 219 B+ A- C C C- C
440 Jordan McRae SG 22 6'5'' 185 C+ B+ C- A- C C
518 T.J. Ford PG 31 6'0'' 181 C- A- B+ A- C- D
411 Dominique Jones PG 26 6'4'' 219 B C+ B B+ D+ B
603 Abdul Gaddy PG 22 6'3'' 177 C C+ B- B- D C
Grade: B. Dj will surprise you with a great trade every once and a while, but this team isn't going anywhere right now. Deej loves loading his team with picks, but has drafted too many role players and has not reached for a star. Currently he has a lot of 2-3 mil rookies on 2-3 year contracts who are just average. The team could use a stud or an identity. The team still gets a "B" because the Raptors always have their picks and can go in any direction right now.

He should probably tear it down and rebuild. They don't have many bigs and have few players of value. Westbrook has not lived up to expectations.

They do have all of their picks so they should be able to recover. However, right now this team is a 35 win team with very little existing value on it.
