2014 Draft Notes
Harrison Barnes is the #1 pick of the 2014 Draft. He is just good at everything. He can score, defend and board. Barnes is an extremely polished player that will come in from Day 1 and be a top option starter at SF. A first year stat line of 20-7-4 wouldn’t be a surprise.
Here is a look at the rest of the 2014 BBS Draft.
Centers…
Rakeem Christmas C 6'9'' 230 22 B- C- D+ B- B- A – Christmas is extremely strong for his size and he uses it very well in the post. It really allows him to score well and rebound well. Christmas can also block some shots as well. While he may not have the ideal size for center, he is plenty big for power forward. Looks like a top 3-5 pick.
Damontre Harris C 6'10'' 215 22 C+ C- D+ B- C A – Harris is more of an athlete then a basketball player at this point. He can run and jump especially well for a player his size. Harris can’t really score in the post or rebound well but he can block some shots and his jump shot is decent. Harris does have some upside though, so it’ll be interesting to see where he’s drafted.
Gorgui Dieng C 6'10'' 210 22 C C- D+ B- B- B – Dieng is a decent shot blocker and rebounder who is invisible offensively. Dieng is someone that can defend in the post, board and hit an occasional jumper but not much else.
Power Forwards…
Terrence Jones PF 6'9'' 210 22 B- C+ C B- C+ A – Jones is a big time prospect. In most other drafts he would be considered for the #1 spot. Jones can score in the bock down low, or out beyond the 3 point line. Defensively Jones can block some shots and get some steals. Jones is also a decent rebounder. Should be a very good BBS player given some development.
DeShaun Thomas PF 6'7'' 215 22 B C D+ C+ C A – Thomas is an undersized power forward prospect with extremely limited ball handling ability. Thomas is extremely strong and has a pretty nice inside game and mid range game. Thomas isn’t very quick and has turnover problems which make most think playing at small forward would be a mistake. Thomas does have some upside though, so it’s hard to tell what he’ll look like once he’s finished developing.
Jayvaughn Pinkston PF 6'6'' 220 22 B- C C- B- B B – Pinkston is all energy; he isn’t a polished player at all. He is jumping and strength and effort. He is a good rebounder and he can score inside but he isn’t a post player. Pinkston also tends to have some major turnover issues.
Hunter Michelson PF 6'10'' 210 21 C B- D+ B- C+ B – Michelson is a finesse post player. Michelson is a solid enough rebounder and his defense is okay. Offensively Michelson is a jump shooter.
Small Forwards…
Jereme Richmond SF 6'7'' 220 22 B C C- B+ C+ A – Richmond is extremely athletic and strong for a small forward. Richmond is a very good man to man defender and rebounder. Offensively he is pretty raw, but has nice upside.
Tony Mitchell SF 6'8'' 216 22 A- C- D C C A – Mitchell is a very athletic player that can jump through the roof. Mitchell is great on the fast break as a finisher. Offensively Mitchell’s game doesn’t go beyond about 7 feet. He has not jump shot and is a horrible free throw shooter. Mitchell is a very bad man to man defender, but he does roam around and get the occasional block.
Tornike Shengelia SF 6'9'' 210 23 C+ C+ C+ C+ C+ B – Shengelia can do a little bit of everything. He can score inside and out. He’s a great ball handler who can pass a little. Shengelia is also a pretty good defender. Shengelia should be a very good utility player.
Jalen Kendrick SF 6'7'' 200 21 B- C B C+ C B – Kendrick isn’t a special player, but he can pass. He can’t really score much, or defend all that well. One thing he can do is pass. Kendrick is another player that will not be allowed to play point guard despite his phenomenal passing ability.
Travis McKie SF 6'7'' 190 22 C+ B+ C- B- B- C – McKie is an extremely polished player that should help his team right away. McKie can score from all over and is a very good rebounder for his size. McKie isn’t much of an athlete, so his upside is pretty questionable. He should be a pretty good player for the short term though either way.
Josh Huestis SF 6'7'' 230 23 C+ D+ D+ C+ B+ B – Huestis is a tough college power forward that may have to play small forward in BBS. Huestis is a plus rebounder who should defend enough to get some nice backup minutes in the pros.
Shooting Guards…
Terrence Ross SG 6'5'' 195 22 C+ B+ C- C C- A – Ross is a very good offensive player. He can score from inside and out. His mid range game is especially deadly. Ross is a pretty mediocre athlete, and it really shows defensively. Ross won’t ever be more then mediocre on the defensive end.
Vander Blue SG 6'3'' 185 21 B C- D+ B C A – Blue is an extremely physical and athletic player. His basketball skills are very raw, but he scores and defends well because he is so much stronger and more physical then his opposing shooting guards.
Doron Lamb SG 6'4'' 180 22 C B+ C B D+ B – Lamb is an excellent shooter, especially from the 3 point line. Lamb isn’t especially athletic and has some major turnover issues both of which will probably push him possibly all the way out of the lotto.
Jordan McRae SG 6'5'' 185 22 C+ B C- A- C- B – McRae is a fundamentally sound player that can defend man to man and shoot. McRae is a plus man to man defender, but he won’t get steals. Offensively McRae is a solid shooter and uses his strength and above average athleticism down low to score as well.
Jordan Sibert SG 6'6'' 200 22 B- B- B+ C C B – Sibert is a plus offensively player with amazing passing skills. Sibert can score from all over and also loves to create for his teammates. Sibert has some major turnover issues though and will not be allowed to play point guard. Defensively Sibert is pretty bad, with little hope of getting better.
Point Guards…
Marquis Teague PG 6'2'' 180 21 C+ B+ B- B- C- A – Teague is a very good BBS PG prospect. Teague is already a very good scorer at the PG spot even as a rookie. He can get to the basket and he has range on his shot. Defensively he is a very good man to man defender, but doesn’t really get steals. His biggest flaw may be his slight turnover problem that might take some time to fix.
Ryan Harrow PG 5'11'' 165 22 C+ B- B- B- C- A – Harrow is a very good scorer and passer. He love to get to the basket and can score inside pretty well despite his slight frame. Harrow also has a very nice in between game. Harrow is also a plus passer, and should get to 10 assists a game at some point. Like Teague, Harrow might have some slight turnover issues.
Ray McCallum PG 6'1'' 185 21 C+ C+ C+ B- D A – McCallum is less developed then Teague and Harrow but he might be the best of the 3. He is a much more sure handed player, and doesn’t turn the ball over much. He isn’t the passer or scorer that Harrow and Teague are but McCallum has some very interesting upside. These 3 point guards will be compared throughout their careers.
Ian Miller PG 6'2'' 180 22 B- B C C+ D+ B – Miller isn’t much of a passer and has some turnover issues, but he should score enough to be a solid backup PG. Miller is a good jump shooter with range well beyond the 3 point line.
Joe Jackson PG 5'11'' 170 21 B C- C+ C D- B – Jackson is a tiny player with big athleticism. He can jump through the roof. Jackson loves to get to the rim and finish. On the other hand Jackson has no jump shot.
Phil Pressey PG 5'10'' 165 22 C B+ B C D C – Pressey is very solid backup point guard prospect. Pressey isn’t very athletic, but he can handle the ball and shoot. Both are very important things for a backup 1.
