2013 Draft Notes
The #1 pick in the 2013 BBS Draft will likely come down to 3 talented players with question marks about certain parts of their games. Austin Rivers is option A. He is an uber-talented guard who can score and defend some. He loves to have the ball in his hands, and can score inside and out. Unfortunately Rivers also has some handling issues that may only make him productive at SG. Option B is Fab Melo. Melo has requisite size for a C and is a very good inside scorer. Melo also is a very good rebounder and a solid man to man defender. Melos flaw is his lack of shot blocking. Option C is Jonas Valanciunas. JV is a multi dimensional offensive player. He can score inside and out. He is also a very good rebounder. JV’s big flaw is twofold, his inability to block shots and his lack of athleticism. All of these players are deserving of the #1 spot, and will be very good BBS players, none of the players are ideal though.
Here is a look at the rest of the Draft Class…
Centers…
Adreian Payne C 6'10'' 235 21 C+ D D B B B…Payne is a super worker who is extremely tough inside. Payne is a good rebounder and an above average post defender. Payne is pretty raw offensively, and has almost no range. Payne is also not a shot blocker.
Aziz N’Diaye C 7'0'' 240 24 C D D- B+ C C…N’Diaye is the only thing close to a shot blocker in this draft. He should get close to 2 a game if given enough minutes. Unfortunately that’s all he really offers. He’s an okay man to man post defender, but he doesn’t really score or board much.
Power Forwards…
Quincy Miller PF 6'10'' 225 20 B C B+ C C+ A…Miller is an amazing athlete. He can run and jump like few players his size. Miller has rare ball handling and passing skills for a player his size. While he is not someone that can run an offense he is someone that will be a great post passer. Offensively Miller is a pretty nice post scorer who has range out to 18 feet. Defensively he is very raw and doesn’t block shots or create steals.
Tobias Harris PF 6'10'' 234 21 B C C C+ B- A…Harris is a very nice inside scorer and rebounder. Although he isn’t the best athlete he can score pretty well inside and out to 15 feet. Harris is a pretty nice man to man defender, but he doesn’t block shots. Harris should go lotto an be a solid scorer/rebounder.
Mouphtaou Yarou PF 6'9'' 240 22 C+ D D- B+ B- A…Yarou is an amazing man to man defender. Yarou also is a nice rebounder that should get better. He doesn’t have much of a offensive game, and he can’t block shots or create steals. Because of this his stock might drop on draft night.
Patric Young PF 6'9'' 240 22 B D+ C- B+ B+ B…Young is a BBS ready PF. He is a very good rebounder and a good man to man post defender. Young is also extremely strong. While he doesn’t have great post moves, Young should be a decent enough scorer as well. Should be a solid lotto selection.
Mason Plumlee PF 6'11'' 223 22 C+ C+ C- B- B- A…Plumlee is a solid shooting big that can board. Plumlee has 3 point range but isn’t much of a post scorer. Plumlee doesn’t block shots so he probably is more suited as a backup PF/C type.
Dante Taylor SF 6'8'' 215 22 B- D+ D B B- B…Taylor is an athletic tweener type forward. He’s very strong for his size and has some nice athleticism. Taylors biggest strength is his offensive rebounding. The other parts of his game are pretty raw.
Small Forwards…
Tyler Honeycutt SF 6'8'' 200 23 B- B- C- C+ C A…Honeycutt is a pretty good scoring wing. He can get to the basket and score, and he has a nice mid range game. Honeycutt could also probably be a plus rebounder at SG. On the down side Honeycutt isn’t much of a defender and probably never will be.
Jordan Price SF 6'6'' 215 18 A- C C B- C+ B…Price is reminiscent of Desmond Mason. He has a great inside game. He is also a very good midrange and free throw shooter. Price is a very good athlete that can run and jump. Price isn’t a great defender, but he’s good enough. Price lacks any 3 point shot and his upside is limited, even so he could be a good starter as a rookie.
Rodney Williams SF 6'7'' 200 21 C+ C+ C- B- C A…Williams is a very raw, very athletic wing player. He can jump through the roof and is extremely quick. Williams is pretty mediocre offensively. Mostly he scores on put backs. He really needs to work on his shot and his ball handling.
LeBryan Nash SF 6'8'' 220 19 B C C C C A…Nash is a great athlete that is a raw basketball player. He is a runner and jumper. Most of his offense comes on fast break buckets. Nash isn’t much of a shooter, doesn’t defend that well and cant really board.
Hollis Thompson SF 6'7'' 210 22 C+ B+ C- C- C+ B…Thompson is an interesting player. He’s a pretty good scorer, especially shooting from 18-23 feet. Thompson is also a very good rebounder for his size. On the down side Thompson is pretty slow and cant defend much.
Karron Johnson SF 6'7'' 220 22 B- B- C- C+ C+ B…Johnson is a great ball handler with the ability to score inside or out. Johnson can get to the basket and finish inside and he has range out beyond the BBS 3 point line. Defensively he is just mediocre but his rebounding is a plus. Solid Mid Round 1 selection.
Dane Miller SF 6'7'' 210 22 C+ C C- A- C B…Miller is a very good defender. He is a good man to man defender at 3 different spots, PF, SF and SG. He will also possibly block a shot a game if given enough minutes. Not a great athlete and limited offensively Miller is a possible late Round 1 selection.
Delvon Roe SF 6'7'' 220 23 C+ C+ C- B+ C B…Roe is a pretty solid all around player. He is a good defender, he creates some steals and he has a pretty balanced offensive game. His upside is questionable so he could either be a solid backup or a solid starter. Either way he should be a late Round 1 selection.
Shooting Guards…
Durand Scott SG 6'3'' 195 22 B- C+ C B- C A…Scott is a pretty nice undersized SG. He can score inside and out and he’s also a pretty nice passer. He is also a solid man to man defender and a plus rebounder for his size. His poor ball handling probably limits him to only playing SG though.
John Jenkins SG 6'5'' 190 21 C A- C- B- D A…Jenkins is a shooter. He has deep 3 point range and has a decent mid range game as well. Defensively Jenkins is decent in man to man, but doesn’t do much help defense or create steals. Jenkins also has a handling problem that may drop his stock on draft night.
Dalton Pepper SG 6'5'' 215 22 B C+ C B- C- A…Pepper is a strong wing player that loves to attack the rim. Pepper is much better inside, or midrange but he does have some range on his shot. Pepper is a solid ball handler, but not much of a passer. Pepper is also a plus athlete.
D.J. Richardson SG 6'3'' 200 22 C+ B- C B+ C- B…Richardson is an insanely good man to man defender. He doesn’t get blocks or steals but all his actual defense ratings are maxed out. Richardson is more of a combo guard but his best position in BBS might be PG. He isn’t much of a passer, but he doesn’t turn the ball over and he might be a decent scorer.
Dominic Cheek SG 6'6'' 185 21 C+ B- C- B C- B…Cheek is a solid scorer. He can score some inside and out. He is a decent ball handler, but not much of a passer. Pretty good man to man defender with impressive strength for a guy his size. Expect Cheek to be drafted somewhere between the end of the lotto and the beginning of Round 2.
Point Guards…
Quinn Cook PG 5'11'' 155 20 C C B+ B+ D+ A…Cook is a very efficient PG who doesn’t score much. He is a very good passer who handles the ball extremely well. Cook is also a solid man to man defender that can also create steals. Offensively he doesn’t really look for his shot much. He really has no 3 point shot and no ability to drive to the basket.
D.J. Cooper PG 5'11'' 165 23 C C+ B C+ C- B…Cooper looks to be a solid backup PG in BBS. His lack of scoring is definitely a draw back but his passing is a huge plus. Cooper really looks to create for other players. He has slight handling issues and doesn’t really create steals like you’d want but overall he should be a late 1st Round pick and solid backup PG.
Dexter Strickland PG 6'3'' 185 22 B- C+ C+ C+ D+ B…Strickland is a combo guard. He can score pretty well. He can get to the basket and he has pretty deep range on his shot. Strickland also can pass a good amount. Good man to man defender, but wont get much steals. His upside is pretty limited, but he should still be a solid backup in BBS.
