When a player receives the ball on offense he can do positive things (hit a shot, make an assist), negative things (miss a shot, turn the ball over) or neutral things (pass the ball to another player). The offensive rating stat measures a players offensive production based on a comparison of positive and negative things done. Neutral actions are ignored (there are no purely neutral actions. A player can hold on to the ball to long and pass it away with 2 seconds on the shot clock or can make a nice pass but the shooting player gets fouled. Since I have no way to measure and grade such actions, they are all grouped as neutral).
A possession is worth approximately 0.92 pts. Therefore a 2pt basket is 1.08 worth (2 points less the worth of the possession) and a 3pt basket is worth 2.08 (3 points less the worth of the possession). An assist is worth the same as a 2 pt basket. A missed shot and a turnover have negative ratings equal to the worth of a possession.
The total offensive rating is the player's yearly rating. There are also per game, per minute and per possession ratings. The per possession ratings are not based on total possessions but rather on possessions in which the player did something positive or negative. An average player's rating is zero.
Obviously point guards will have the best ratings as a rule since they have the most assists and have the ability to score no less than other positions. There is nothing inherent in the rating which hurts pfs and cs but they generally have lower ratings because their shooting efficiency is generally lower than the other positions. In any case the ratings are best used to compare players playing the same position.
