Basketball is a game of opportunities and exploitation of opportunities. Each possession is an opportunity which may be exploited by scoring a basket or wasted by missing a shot or turning the ball over. Unlike power rankings which have a human bias, statistical ratings provide a clear statistical breakdown of teams offensive and defensive performances. It should be noted that negative defensive performances are actually good because they note that the other team's offensive performance was below average. An average possession so far this year has been worth 0.938273 points. The offensive rating is computed by comparing the team's stats with the average team. The Defensive rating is computed by computing the team's "against" ratings meaning the opposing team's offensive ratings. Since it is a statistical rating it will be thrown off by blowout wins and close losses. If a team is 3-3 but has a 15 point average point differential than it will probably have a better rating than a 6-0 team with a lower average point differential. Also the rating is only after a few so a bunch of games against bad teams could improve a team's rating. My guess is that these things will average out by the end of the year and the ratings will be more exact. The defensive rating is very interesting especially because it is hard to get a clear measure of a team's defensive effectiveness since steal and blocks only tell part of the story. ![](http://i1027.photobucket.com/albums/y334/gabefree/bbs.jpg)

How do you know how many possesions there have been? like how do you calculate offensive rebounds and such?

Posessions are easy. One of three things happens each possession either a field goal attempt, a turnover over 2 fts. You just add those up and you have the total possession number. The number is not 100% accurate bc you could also have 3pt plays but the difference would be marginal. There is sadly enough no way to calculate offensive rebounds

yeah but without offensive rebounds you can't calculate possesions...that is what i meant....If you get 10 offensive rebounds a game it looks like you have 10 more possesions.

The way I see it you do If I grab an offensive board it should be as valuable as if I grab a defensive rebound Either way my team gets another shot
