1. Detroit Pistons - Shaquille O'Neal C 7'1'' 325 19 B+ D D+ B B A
The selection of Shaquille O'Neal could catapult the Pistons into the playoffs. Hes the type of player that not only should be an automatic Rookie of the Year selection he should be dominant enough that the worst team in the league could get to 40 wins with just his addition. Add that with the progress of super sophomore Gary Payton and the Pistons will be a team to be reckoned with.
2. Oklahoma City Thunder - Dikembe Mutombo C 7'2'' 245 25 C+ C- C- A- B B
The Thunder need a star player and they get just that in Dikembe Mutombo. Although not a big time offensive player, Mutombo should dominate on the defensive side of things from Day 1. Expect 3 blocks, 12 boards and lots of finger wags. Also expect lots of losses for the Thunder.
3. Orlando Magic - Kenny Anderson PG 6'0'' 168 20 C+ C B C+ D+ A
The Magic take the player with the most upside at this point and thats Kenny Anderson. This selection is good for 2 reasons. 1, the Magic get a very good young PG to groom for the future and 2, the Magic should still be bad enough to tank another year and acquire another potential star player.
4. Portland Trail Blazers - Billy Owens SF 6'8'' 220 22 B- C C+ C+ C+ A
Portland doesn't have much of anything as far as long term prospects go so they really need Billy Owens to be the real deal. Owens has some amazing skills, but he's been labeled as soft and his jumper is sub par.
5. Dallas Mavericks - Steve Smith SG 6'7'' 200 22 C+ B+ C+ C D+ B
The Mavericks already have a super scorer in Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf. In Steve Smith they add another guy that should get over 20 points a game. In an uptempo offense expect these guys to score a lot and lose even more.
6. Chicago Bulls - Stacey Augmon SF 6'6'' 205 23 C+ C- C- B+ C A
The Bulls have a ton of youth so adding a player with a combination of upside and defense makes a lot of sense. The Bulls might already have a core that compete in the future, so adding a defender like Augmon is always a good idea.
7. Golden State Warriors - Dale Davis PF 6'11'' 230 22 C+ D+ D+ B B B
The Warriors have a solid young scorer in Glen Rice and a decent young big in Roy Tarpley. Aside from that they are wide open. In Dale Davis they get a player that should step in right away at C and grab 10 boards and score 10 points a contest. Davis also allows the Warriros to move Manute Bol to the bench where he should be more affective.
8. Boston Celtics - Bobby Phills SG 6'5'' 210 23 C B C B D+ B
The Celtics need quite a bit. In Phills they don't get the high end talent the would hope for, but they do get a very good role player that should compliment Dan Majerle well. This selection also allows the Celtics to move Jerome Lane into a backup forward role that should benefit him.
9. Phoenix Suns - Rick Fox SF 6'7'' 230 22 C+ C+ C- B C B
The Suns really needed a top tier player from this draft, but all they can hope for is a solid starter. Fox isn't a star but he should be a good starter. Expect him to start at SF for the Suns and get 10-12 points and grab 5 boards. FOx should also give the Suns some nice defense and help them stay in the race for the top pick in 92.
10. New Orleans Hornets - Stanley Roberts C 7'0'' 285 21 B D+ D+ C C+ B
The Hornets already have a ton of young talent so they can afford to take a chance on a promising big man in Stanley Roberts. Roberts should be a solid bench scorer at worst. At best he could become a 15-10 starting center.
11. Miami Heat - Luc Longley C 7'2'' 265 22 C+ C- D+ B B- B
The Heat really need a top echelon player from this draft but they wont get it at 11. The Heat seem to be building around defense so they continue on that track selecting big man Luc Longley. Adding Longley should push Olden Polynice deeper onto the bench which should help in the short and long term.
12. Washington Wizards - Ike Austin C 6'10'' 255 22 B+ C- C- C C+ C
The Wizards would like to add another solid piece to their rotation so they go with someone a little more polished in Ike Austin. While he isn't a very good defender, and not the best rebounder he can score. Add him in to the already solid Wizards rotation and they may leap into the playoffs next year.
13. Detroit Pistons (from the Atlanta Hawks) - Chris Gatling PF 6'10'' 220 24 B- C- C B- C+ B
Having already added Shaquille O'Neal the Pistons can really go in almost any direction here. They just need to add some complimentary pieces to Shaq and point guard Gary Payton. In Gatling they get a very solid PF who can score a little, defend some and rebound some. Gatling gives a good amount of energy and should start from Day 1 along side Shaq.
