I think you're thinking of the HD Dolby sound stuff, which used to be true. The new PS3 Slim supports it now.

PS3 is a top 5 blu-ray player out there, and for the price differences in lesser players, no need to choose anything besides the PS3 unless you can't shell out the extra $100. You're only going to get a better blu-ray player for an extra $100-$300, so PS3 is an easy choice.
