Kwame Brown
C
6'11 270
18 years old
Glynn Academy (GA)
Draft Ratings: C+ D+ D+ B- B- A
Profile
Strengths: Among all the high school standouts expected to declare for the 2001 BBS draft which includes possibly Tyson Chandler and Eddy Curry, Kwame Brown is considered the premier prep player head and shoulders above them all. At Glynn Academy, Brown leaves as the school's all-time leading rebounder and shot blocker and was named to the McDonald's All-American Team. Brown seems to have all the physical tools that coaches love in a big man including long arms, great size and a solid stature. In high school, Brown made his presence felt mostly on the rebounding and defensive ends and that trend should continue on the BBS level. His scoring ability although widely considered still raw, has potential to get better yet at right now most of his points come off layups and dunks within the paint. His strength around the basket should allow him to shoot better than 50 percent for the entirety of his BBS career.
Weaknesses: While many don't doubt the athletic specimen Brown is as a big man, almost every scout has question marks about Brown's basketball IQ and desire to improve. AAU coaches and advanced scouts cite that Brown has attitude problems and poor work ethic which may hinder his ability to reach his full potential. On top of that, Brown is horrific from the foul line and will need to improve that percentage to become a scoring option for any team. Brown's jumpshot lacks any consistency and will need personal attention in this area in order to be serviceable. His post game also leaves a lot to be desired as he will not be able to out muscle many defenders in the BBS. Also, Brown is not very good with the ball in his hands and could actually be a liability with turnovers if his ball handling does not get better.
Outlook: Brown will be a lottery pick and should go anywhere from picks 7-12 depending on insiders' mock drafts and other scouting services. There is an outside chance Brown keeps his commitment to the University of Florida but if he opts to stay in the draft, it will be interesting to see where he is taken alongside fellow high schoolers Curry and Chandler.
