Kenyon Martin
PF
6’9 241
22 years old
Cincinnati
Draft Ratings: B- C C- B C+ A
Profile[/u]
Strengths: As the consensus player of the year at the University of Cincinnati during his senior campaign, Kenyon Martin capped off his season averaging nearly 19 points, 10 boards and 3.5 blocks per game. Martin terrorized opposing defenses with his authoritative finishes around the basket as well as his medium range jumper. His tenacity in defending the hoop will also be a major part of his game at the BBS level as he could hover around 2 to 3 blocks for his entire career. Martin rarely gets boxed out without putting all his strength down low on his man and is physically ready to combat the best forwards of BBS as a rookie. ‘K-Mart’ has the ability to shoot possibly better than 48 to 50 percent for his entire career as he rarely has off-nights offensively or takes shots out of his range.
Weaknesses: Although brawny, Martin may lose the rebounding matchup at times but may still develop into a double digit board crasher with the right development plan. He will never blow you away with his playmaking abilities and is still a rather raw ball handler if trying to create his own shot. A decent foul shooter but may still need to prove his range beyond 15 feet. Even though his viciousness will help him become a stellar defender, Martin may at times be foul prone and could spend a good number of games on the bench after fouling out. His post game is good but still needs to be refine his jump hook and drop step moves around the hoop.
Outlook: Martin is a lock for the top 5 of the draft, possibly even the top 3 depending if he chooses to stay an extra year at Cincy and the other talent available at the top. Some scouts feel his game draws parallels to Shawn Kemp, while others feel he could develop into a poor man’s PJ Brown. Either way, Martin is a fine power forward prospect that should help any team out looking for a potential elite defender and strong inside scorer.
