Darius Miles
SF
6’9 202
18 years old
East St. Louis High School, IL
Draft Ratings: B- C C B- C A
Profile[/u]
Strengths: Darius Miles is one of the most dynamic high school phenoms to emerge from the world of prep basketball in quite some time. Patterning his game after his idol and mentor, Kevin Garnett, Miles used his freakish athletic ability to score over 23 points, 12 rebounds and nearly 8 blocks per game as a high school senior. Miles is known as a sensational finisher above the rim being able to catch and throw down any alley-oop in his vicinity. He also has a seven foot wingspan that allows him to get into passing lanes and disrupt a lot of jump shots. Many envision Miles fitting the mold of former high school stars Tracy McGrady, Garnett and Rashard Lewis while others see some Jonathan Bender in him. One of Miles’ closest friends, Quentin Richardson of DePaul University, also projects to be selected in this year’s draft and could combine to be quite a tandem on the BBS level.
Weaknesses: As an incoming draft pick, he is very weak to play the power forward spot and will be outmuscled by small forwards almost every night. Miles really needs to add more muscle and fill out his frame in order to round off his inside and post up games. There are some questions about his work ethic and desire to get better. Miles has to continually work on his jump shot mechanics and be able to knock down a jumper on a consistent basis in order to become a starter. Miles is adequate being a help side defender but will not survive in this league solely relying on his athleticism on defense. He is not much of a playmaker at this point of his career and may be turnover prone at times. On both ends of the court, don’t expect Miles to be much of a factor on the boards unless given appropriate attentions of improvements in those areas. Scouts and team executives also have questions about Miles’ basketball IQ and maturity to play at such a high level at his age.
Outlook: Despite countless critics of his game, Miles figures to be a lottery pick should he declare from high school. Many scouts believe Miles does not have the grades to stick in college and BBS might be his best choice at this time. If that is the case, any team drafting is getting an athletic specimen that can be a bust or boom type project player in the end.
