This list is based off of a number of factors, not just ratings or stats. These factors include age, contract, whether they have been shopped around, if they player has been traded recently, and the importance of certain positions.
#40 Robert Horry SF 22 6'9'' 220 C+ B+ C- A C B
To be honest, I was running out of ideas for this spot. Horry is only a rookie and had a great first TC. A premier defender who appears to be developing a solid offensive game. He can defend either forward spot which makes him very useful on a playoff caliber team. If he can improve his offense a bit more and his rebounding he could be an extremely good player.
#39 Nick Anderson SG 24 6'6'' 205 B B- C A- C B
A career 20ppg scorer Anderson has largely gone unnoticed. If he can improve his efficiency he could be a multiple time All-Star. Anderson is already a very good defender and he's still only 24 years old. At 6'6" he has great size for the shooting guard position. Not a franchise type player but could serve as the perfect sidekick to a great player.
#38 Rik Smits C 26 7'4'' 250 B+ C- D+ A- C+ B
Smit's doesn't have the sexy ratings of some of the other guys on this list, but his height and shot blocking abilities make him a very valuable player. Smits is not a good rebounder for a guy who's 7'4". Still a good scorer Smits is only 26 and could still improve some.
#37 Kendall Gill SG 24 6'5'' 195 C+ B C+ B+ C A
Gill's great TC has made him a valuable commodity. The SG position is also an extremely valuable position as there isn't many young SG's on the market right now. Gill has the ability to play both SG and PG if he can work on his handling a bit.
#36 Rod Strickland PG 26 6'3'' 175 C C+ A A- D+ B
#35 Scott Skiles PG 28 6'1'' 180 C A- A B D+ C
#34 Mark Jackson PG 27 6'1'' 181 B- C+ A- A- D+ A
All three are super solid PG's who would be best served as complimentary players. Skiles is by far the best offensively, Strickland is probably the best defender, and Jackson is the best all around PG. Jackson gets the nod as he already has a better all around game than the other two and still has room to grow.
#33 Joe Dumars PG 29 6'3'' 190 B C+ B A- D+ B
Dumars is a skilled player who can swing from the SG and PG depending on the team. He's not great at anything but doesn't have any glaring weaknesses. At 29 he's just about at the peak of his career and should still have 2-3 years at this current level.
#32 Terrell Brandon PG 22 5'11'' 180 B- B- B- C+ D+ A
A little early to tell on Brandon but the results so far have been good. Brandon is a solid offensive player who looks like he could develop in a very good one. His defense is not exactly what you'd want but he's still only a rookie. Just got traded so his value has dropped a little bit.
#31 Reggie Miller SF 27 6'7'' 188 B A- C C+ C- B
Thus far Reggie Miller has been a bit of a disappointment. Many GM's around the league had him pegged as a 25-28ppg scorer who could be the best player on a good team. Right now he's a very solid scorer who does little else. Miller is a below average defender and poor ball handler. He still has some room to grow, but at 27 it's highly unlikely he has the potential to grow into a franchise player.
#30 Dennis Rodman SF 31 6'7'' 210 C+ C- C+ A+ A B
Rodman is the type of player that every contender would love to have. One of the best man to man defenders and rebounders in the league. His offensive game leaves quite a bit to be desired, but if he's on a team with a great scorer or two he is the perfect complimentary player.
#29 Kenny Anderson PG 21 6'0'' 168 C+ C+ B B+ D+ B
#28 Billy Owens SF 23 6'8'' 220 B- C B- B- B B
# 27 Toni Kukoc SF 24 6'10'' 192 B- B B- B- C A
All three guys share one thing in common, they all have boom or bust potential. Right now none of these guys is anywhere close to the level of superstar. The all around games of Kukoc and Owens are very promising, they just need a few more TC's to see if they can put it together. Anderson is only 21 and has improved steadily over the last two TC's.
#26 Charles Oakley PF 28 6'8'' 225 B C C A- A B
Really a bit of surprise for me that he's ranked this high, but ratings and numbers don't lie. Oakley has been steadily developing into one of the best rebounders in the league and this year he has a very good chance of leading the league. Defensively he doesn't get many blocks, but he's a terrific positional defender. Offensively he won't give you 20ppg, but 15 points along with 13 or 14 rebounds is pretty solid.
# 25 Larry Johnson PF 23 6'6'' 250 B+ C C- C+ B+ B
Another of my favorite young players in the league. I think he has the potential to develop into a Derrick Coleman type player. Should be able average 20-23ppg 10rpg as a rookie. At 23 he's older than most rookies but should still have plenty of potential to develop his game.
#24 Glen Rice SG 25 6'7'' 218 B A- C+ B- C B
Another great scorer, Rice has the potential to be a Mullin type player in the future. A efficient scorer who has great height for the SG position. Rice's 28ppg last season should only go up in the future. Defensively Rice is lacking a bit but at 25 he can still improve to a proficient level.
#23 Hersey Hawkins SG 26 6'3'' 190 B+ A- C A- C- B
Hawkins has great ratings, but is a bit of a tweener. He can't quite handle the ball well enough to play SG and is too small to play SG. Still a great scorer, but can be locked down by taller players. Hawkins still has room to grow and should improve over the next few season.
#22 Dominique Wilkins SF 32 6'7'' 200 A- B C+ B B- C
Nique is still a dynamic scorer who can fill it up with just about anyone in the league. Problem is at 32 his skills are clearly declining and it's questionable how long he'll be able to maintain his form as a top player. Originally had him ranked 3-4 spots lower but his scoring ability and all around game are still far too good to be outside the top 25.
#21 Kevin Johnson PG 26 6'1'' 183 A- C+ B+ B+ C- B
A great scorer who's skill set is probably better suited for the SG position, unfortunately his height does not allow him to be effective there. Still relatively young he could still limit his TO's and develop a slightly better outside shot. If this happens he will shoot into up the rankings.
#20 Larry Bird SF 35 6'9'' 220 B+ A B A C+ D
#19 Magic Johnson PG 33 6'8'' 215 B B+ A+ B+ C D
Two of the greatest players ever have just about reached the end of their careers. Bird probably only has one or two seasons left while Magic is no longer that player he once was. Both are still awesome players but the trade value of either is not as high as it once was. Magic gets the slight nod as he has a few more high quality seasons left.
#18 Mitch Richmond SG 27 6'5'' 218 B A- C+ A- C B
Richmond is in the same category as Drexler and Mullin, stud wing scorer but he's not as efficient as Mullin or have the all around game of Mullin. He will without a doubt pass these two in the next few season as long as he can improve any part of his game.
#17 Dan Majerle SG 27 6'6'' 217 B- A- C+ A- C+ C
Majerle is just an all around solid player who has no real flaws in his game. He can play any position from PG to SF and slapped up a 20-7-9 last year playing PG and his assists numbers look to be going up this season. His performance at PG while relatively limiting his TO's makes him more valuable than someone like Richmond or Hawkins despite the fact that they probably have better ratings.
#16 Clyde Drexler SF 30 6'7'' 213 A- B B- A C+ C
Clyde and Mullin are pretty much a toss up when it comes to rankings but the fact that Mullin is slightly younger and much more efficient scorer. Drexler is the all around better player, but at this point I'd far prefer Mullin.
#15 Chris Mullin SG 29 6'6'' 201 B+ A C+ B+ C- B
Mullin is the definition of a pure scorer, not only does he average over 27ppg for his career but his percentages are off the charts (49%FG 90%FT 45%3FG). Not a great defender, but by no means is he a liability. He has no real holes in his game and at 29 still probably has 4-5 good years left.
#14 Scottie Pippen SF 27 6'7'' 210 B B B A+ B- B
Without a doubt my favorite non-superstar player in the league, although I'm sure some people would argue that he's a superstar. Pippen can play 4 positions and is the best all around defender in the league with the ability to defend any position from PF to PG. His numbers may not be eye-popping, but when you factor in his whole game and the fact that he is just hitting his prime this spot seems about right for him.
#13 John Stockton PG 30 6'1'' 170 C+ A A+ A- D+ C
#12 Tim Hardaway PG 26 6'0'' 175 C+ A- A+ A- C- B
Really a toss up between these two guys, might give Stockton the slight edge now but Hardaway's age and future improvements give him the edge overall. Stockton is the slightly better passer while Hardaway is known for his ball handling ability and "killer cross". Not really much to say about these guys except that they are two elite PG's who's only real flaw is that they turn the ball over a bit too much. This can be slightly forgiven when you factor in they dish out over 10apg.
#11 Patrick Ewing C 30 7'0'' 243 A C- C A B B
Ewing is probably one of the top 5 players in the league skill-wise, but the fact that he just got traded dropped him down a few spots. At 30 Ewing is probably approaching the downside of his career, but should still be a top level player for the next 2-3 seasons. Ewing's main problem is his inability to handle the ball. He turns the ball over far too much for a guy that only handles the ball in the post. I had a really tough time placing him as skill-wise he's great but I wasn't surprised at all that he was traded and I think he could be traded again sometime in the not so distant future.
#10 Gary Payton PG 24 6'4'' 183 B- C+ A A C A
This was another tough one, as both Stockton and Tim Hardaway are currently better players. The two things that set GP apart was his age and rebounding ability. At 24 Payton is two years younger than Hardaway and six years younger than Stockton. So far this season Payton has done a very good job limiting his TO's which could make him one of the most valuable players in the league in the future. Another reason he is ranked ahead of Stockton is that while the two were just traded for each other Otis Thorpe a 20ppg scorer last year was also included from Denver in order to make the trade fair. Payton's ability to grab over 6rpg will make him a constant triple-double threat.
#9 Alonzo Mourning PF 22 6'10'' 240 B C D- B+ B+ A
Might be a little to high for a guy who has really yet to prove anything, but there are very few players in the league that the Blazers would trade him for. Zo is the second half of possibly the greatest frontcourt the league will ever see. Right now the Blazers should be scary good, but give those two a few years and if Portland doesn't have at least two championships something went terribly wrong. Needless to say Mourning this high has quite a bit to do with the fact that he most likely will not be traded anytime soon.
#8 Karl Malone PF 29 6'9'' 250 A C C B+ B+ D
Malone was easily the hardest player for me to rate. He has great ratings and has put up some great numbers, but it's hard to not feel like he has been used wrong his entire career. His numbers have been very good, but he just leaves me with the lingering feeling that he could do more. It might be the lack of buzz you hear about him from his GM, but he's never mentioned in the conversation of the leagues best players. He's not getting any better, so 8 might be highest spot he'll ever get to.
#7 Derrick Coleman PF 25 6'10'' 230 A- C+ C B A- C
Originally had him ranked a bit lower, but the guys a straight up monster. One of the best rebounders in the league as well as one of the most versatile low post scorers. Defensively there is room for improvement but at 25 there is no doubt in my mind that he still has plenty of room to grow. Not a big name like Jordan or Barkley, but he is absolutely one of the leagues elite players.
# 6 Shawn Kemp PF 22 6'10'' 230 B+ C- C- A B B
This might be a bit of a controversial pick, but Kemp is already a great player and his upside is through the roof. Only 22 years old Kemp has the potential to be on the best in the league. Chicago has begun to build a very strong squad and if Kemp can boost his scoring to the 22-25 ppg mark they have a serious shot at winning a title. The best aspect of Kemp's game is his explosiveness which makes him virtually unstoppable around the hoop.
#5 Charles Barkley SF 29 6'5'' 250 A- B+ C+ A- A- C
Sir Charles rounds out the top 5. His ability to score inside and out is rivaled by few in the league. Barkley has no legitimate holes in his game. I love his game, but I have a feeling he will be getting traded very soon. Too bad his prime has so far been wasted on below average teams.
#4 Michael Jordan SG 29 6'6'' 195 A B+ B+ A+ C C
Some might be a little shocked that MJ is this low but I can't see an instance where anyone would trade the guys straight up for him. At 29, Jordan is no longer a young player. He's currently injured which is not helping his stock. MJ is still the leagues premier perimeter scorer and defender but he has been unable to lead Utah to the promise land.
#3 Hakeem Olajuwon C 29 6'10'' 250 A C C A+ A C
#2 David Robinson C 27 7'1'' 235 A C- C- A A- C
Really a toss up between these two guys. I really like Hakeem but age and stats may give Robinson the slight edge. You couldn't go wrong with either guy though. Robinson has a bit more room to grow while Hakeem is probably at his peak. Hakeem is probably the best defensive big man in the league while Robinson may be the best post scorer.
#1 Shaquille O'Neal C 20 7'1'' 325 A- D C- B A- A
Not sure if this is who everyone was expecting, but Shaq should never be traded. At 21 years old he is already one of the best players in the league. He should surpass Hakeem, Robinson, and Ewing in the next few seasons. He is one of the greatest physical specimens the league has ever seen standing at 7'+ and 300+lbs. Will be the most dominant player in the league for the next 7-10 years. His numbers in only his second season are absolutely mind boggling.
#40 Robert Horry SF 22 6'9'' 220 C+ B+ C- A C B
To be honest, I was running out of ideas for this spot. Horry is only a rookie and had a great first TC. A premier defender who appears to be developing a solid offensive game.
