BBS' Best: The Ten Most Valuable Players in the BBS
Bill Simmons got me thinking in his book of basketball, and my team sucks and needs some RC's, so it is now time to look at the leagues best players. This is not a value list, but instead a list to try and determine the leagues most valuable player. Stats, wins, situation, position, and ratings will all be taken into account. Age will not. With player pages updated and two all-star games complete, let's take a look:
10-6
10. Chris Mullin--Los Angeles Lakers
Ratings: B A C+ B+ C B, SG
Career Stats: 27 ppg 6 rpg 4 apg 2 spg 49% shooting
Accomplishments: 1990 All League 3rd team, 1991 All-star
One of only two shooting guards on the list, Mullin might be a surprise pick here. However, despite only making all leage 3rd team honors last year, Mullin has to be considered the best SG in the league besides for MJ. He is the rock of the Lakers and led them to a huge year last year and is only going to get better. He wins the nod over Shaq because of his teams success and over Drexler (the 2nd team SG) because of Clyde's struggles early this season.
9. Derrick Coleman--Memphis Grizzlies
Ratings: A- C C B B+ B, PF
Career Stats: 27 ppg 12 rpg 4 apg 0.8 bpg 49% shooting
Accomplishments: 1990 All League 3rd team, 1991 All-star, among various rookie awards
BBS' Coleman is the NBA's Coleman had he realized his full potential. He has everything you want in your power forward: mean post moves, a deadly jumper, and the ability to rebound. He's also led the Grizzlies to unexpected success this year. Expect this to continue, as the only way DC can go is up.
8. Karl Malone--Milwaukee Bucks
Ratings: A- C C B+ B+ C
Career Stats: 30 ppg 10 rpg 5 apg 0.6 bpg
Accomplishments: 1990 All League 1st team, 1991 All-star
The mailman has certainly delivered statistically. Putting up an astounding 31/11 this year, Malone might be the best scorer in BBS. However, his teams inability to win brings his value into question. Is he a product of a poor team and does he make his teammates better are two lingering question on a lot of people's mind. For now, Malone stays at the number eight spot despite his gaudy numbers.
7. John Stockton--Denver Nuggets
Ratings: C+ A A+ B+ D B
Career Stats: 18 ppg 10.6 apg 4 rpg 3 spg 48% shooting
Accomplishments: 2X All star, All league 2nd team, All defensive 2nd team
Our first point guard shows up here, and for good reason. There is absolutely no questioning Stockton’s value to his team, as he has led and otherwise mediocre cast into the playoff picture in the West. A good point guard does that, and Stockton is one of the elite at his position. Career numbers of 19/11 and 3 steals are your “ideal” point guard numbers, and it’s hard to make a case for anyone behind Stockton to make the jump to seven.
6. Charles Barkley--Indiana Pacers
Ratings: A- B+ C+ A- A- C
Career Stats: 32 ppg 11.5 rpg 4.7 apg 1.9 spg 52% shooting
Accomplishments: 2x All star, All league 1st team
Barkley is a stud, no doubt about it. Maybe the most versatile scorer in the league, Barkley’s numbers could very well contend for the # 1 spot. However, the Pacers are not exactly a juggernaut and Barkley isn’t exactly a stud defender. You might wonder why Magic is in front of him, but we’ll get there in a second.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
5-1
5. Magic Johnson--Toronto Raptors
Ratings: B+ B+ A B+ C+ D
Career Stats: 23 ppg 11 apg 7 rpg 2 spg 49% shooting
Accomplishments: 2x All Star, All League 1st team
When GM’s talk about the best players in the league, the conversation generally consists of MJ, Hakeem, Barkley, D—Rob. However, this should not be the case. Magic is the best point guard in a big man league and a case can be made that he is the most valuable player in BBS. 23/11/7 is insane, and what he’s done with an average Raptors team is even more startling. Five may even be too low for Magic.

4. Michael Jordan--Utah Jazz
Ratings: A B B+ A+ C B
Career Stats: 28 ppg 7 rpg 6 apg 3 spg
Accomplishments: 2X All-star, All league 1st team, All defensive team, All-star game MVP
Yes, MJ finally makes his appearance. Maybe he wasn’t what we all thought he would be, but he’s still a stud and far and away the best SG in the league, 28/7/6 is sick, and he’s also arguably the best defensive wing in the league as well. Considering the Jazz’s success this year, he might make a jump into the top 3 soon.
4. Michael Jordan--Utah Jazz
Ratings: A B B+ A+ C B
Career Stats: 28 ppg 7 rpg 6 apg 3 spg
Accomplishments: 2X All-star, All league 1st team, All defensive team, All-star game MVP

3. Larry Bird--Charlotte Bobcats
Ratings: B+ A B+ A C+ C
Career Stats: 29 ppg 7.6 rpg 5 apg 1.7 spg 0.8 bpg 51% shooting
Accomplishments: 1X all star, 3pt champion, All league 2nd Team, Finals MVP
Another potentially controversial choice, but this is definitely warranted. Bird just gets the nod over MJ, as his Finals MVP proves greater than anything Jordan has done to this point. The best player on the best team in the league has to be worth something, and Birds 29//5/2/1 don’t lie. Sick player.
2. Hakeem Olaujuwon--New Jersey Nets
Ratings: A C C- A+ A C
Career Stats: 29 ppg 13.6 rpg 3.4 apg 2.1 spg 4.1 bpg
Accomplishments: 2X all star, All defensive 2nd team
It’s down to the final two, and Hakeem takes the second spot on the list. Probably the best all-around player in the league, the only thing keeping Hakeem from the top spot is his injury problem. When he’s healthy, he’s absurdly good. His 4 bpg and 2 spg is ridiculous, especially considering he does 29/14 to go with that. He and our # 1 will be running the league for years to come.
1. David Robinson--SanAntonio Spurs
Ratings: A C- C A A- C
Career Stats: 31 ppg 14 rpg 4 apg 1.2 spg 3.8 bpg
Accomplishments: 2x All star, All star MVP, All D 1st team, All league 1st team, Defensive POTY, Most Valuable Player
The Admiral has it all going for him. He’s built like a tank, he’s a lefty, and he his ridiculously skilled. Our most valuable player, Robinson has career averages of 31/14/4/4/1. And he’s just 26….unbelievable. There is no argument here: Robinson will be the best player in BBS for years
