With the 4th round almost finished in BBS’ creation draft, teams are now looking on to the season. While the draft moved slowly, plenty happened. Some teams have already mortgaged their futures, while others have completely forgotten about the now. Here, we grade the Eastern Conference teams on their drafts (WC grades will come tomorrow):
Boston Celtics:
Roster:
330 Felton Spencer C 22 7'0'' 265 C+ C- D- B+ B B
441 Dan Majerle SG 25 6'6'' 215 B- B C+ A- C B
Picks:All of its own, LAL 94-97, 01
The Celtics sold high on Chris Mullin and are now one of many teams who are committed to a rebuild. While the Mullins deal was nice, the picks of Thunder Dan Majerle and Felton Spencer don’t really make you turn your head. Majerle looks really good, but the Celtics probably should have gone with a younger, higher upside guy if they are really looking to rebuild. Spencer, while just 22, looks to be a future 5th starter.
Grade: B, great value on the Mullins deal but the other picks leave some to be desired.
Miami Heat:
Roster:
559 Chris Dudley C 25 6'11'' 235 C+ F+ D A- A- B
344 Lionel Simmons SF 21 6'7'' 210 B C- C A B- C
641 Nick Anderson SG 22 6'6'' 205 B+ C+ C B C B
Picks: All of its own
The Heat were one of only a few teams who just went through the motions. While they made a couple of trades, none of them but the Heat in a good position to compete or rebuild. The Heat currently have a mediocre roster assembled of young role players and look like a team that will be in the middle of the pack for a while.
Grade: D+, nothing happening here.
New Jersey Nets
Roster:
402 Hakeem Olajuwon C 27 6'10'' 250 A- C C A+ A
592 Tom Chambers SF 31 6'9'' 220 A- C+ C B C+ C
367 Alvin Robertson PG 28 6'3'' 185 B- C+ B A C D
Picks: all its own
While the Nets did not make a trade, they do have a clear direction: compete. Blu did a fantastic job of assembling a winning team without sacrificing the Nets future, and came up with two steals in Alvin Robertson and Tom Chambers to put alongside Hakeem Olajuwon. With more success drafting in the coming rounds, the Nets should be contenders for a long time.
Grade: A. The Nets will have some problems with depth, but they have a great 1-2-3 and have all of its picks.
New York Knicks
Roster:
396 Robert Parish C 37 7'0'' 230 B C- D+ A- B+ D
404 Charles Oakley PF 26 6'8'' 225 B- C C A- A- B
312 Wayman Tisdale PF 26 6'9'' 240 A- C- C- C+ C+ C
434 Anthony Mason PF 23 6'7'' 250 C+ C- C+ C+ C+ A
623 Larry Bird SF 33 6'9'' 220 B+ A B+ A C+ D
269 Orlando Woolridge SF 30 6'9'' 215 A- C C C+ C+ D
543 Mark Aguirre SF 6'6'' 232 30 B+ C+ C C+ C+ D
558 Joe Dumars SG 27 6'3'' 190 B C+ B A- D+ B
320 Isiah Thomas PG 29 6'1'' 180 B B A- B C- C
Picks: NONE until 2000
Yup, the Knicks have their whole roster set after 3 ½ rounds. Unfortunately, they have no picks until 2000. While this looks like a huge risk, the Knicks will be happy if they squeak out 1-2 titles and suffer the consequences later. Right now, the team looks great. The team features a top 5 player in Larry Bird, two defensive big man, and the bad-boy backcourt of Isiah Thomas and Joe Dumars. Add in the best bench in the league, and the Knicks have a title contender. Question is: is it worth it?
Grade: B-. Great team, but potentially in danger of facing the CY down the road.
Orlando Magic:
Roster: None
Picks: Essentially the whole leagues. Monopolies on the Knicks and Rockets future.
Grade: N/A. can’t say. Outlawz did the same thing in the last creation draft and it worked very well. His team will suffer for 2-3 years but should be excellent in the future if he plays his cards right.
Philadelphia 76ers
Roster:
364 David Robinson C 25 7'1'' 235 A C- C A A- B
221 Charles Smith PF 25 6'10'' 230 B+ C- C B+ C+ C
619 Muggsy Bogues PG 25 5'3'' 136 C C A B+ D+ B
Picks: All of their own
Another team that is almost stuck in the middle, the Sixers have assembled a nice roster of 25 year olds. With a stud in David Robinson, you’d have liked to see them make a conscious effort to compete, but the Sixers played it conservatively, which might be a good idea considering what else is happening in their conference. They can definitely afford to considering Robinson’s age, but Bogues and Smith look like nothing more than role players.
Grade: B-. The Admiral should put Philly in a good spot for years to come. However, unless trades are made, this team will be hovering around 40 wins for a while.
Washington Wizards:
333 Rik Smits C 24 7'4'' 250 B C- C- A- C+ B
96 Tyrone Hill PF 22 6'9'' 240 C+ D+ D- C+ B A
351 Detlef Schrempf SF 27 6'9'' 214 B+ C+ C C B C
225 Cedric Ceballos SF 6'6'' 190 21 B C- C- C+ C+ B
436 Sarunas Marciulionis SF 26 6'5'' 200 A- C C- C C- B
Picks: all of their own
JAH took kind of an odd approach to this draft. He made an effort to stay young, but didn’t acquire any future picks. And, looking at these guys on paper, none look like future stars so it’s hard to say Washington did a great job. While Smits was a nice pick at his slot and Ceballos was a nice 4th round addition, you have got to question taking two 26+ year olds who don’t play defense in Schrempf and Sarunas in the 3rd round. A bit confusing there
Grade: C. JAH will be fine because he has all of his picks, just not much to talk about from the Wizards.
Atlanta Hawks
Roster:
544 Patrick Ewing C 28 7'0'' 240 A C- C A B C
285 Hot Rod Williams PF 28 6'11'' 215 B C- C- B+ C+ B
267 James Worthy SF 29 6'9'' 225 B C+ C+ A- C C
368 Doc Rivers SG 29 6'4'' 185 C+ B B A- D+ C
452 Fat Lever PG 30 6'3'' 170 B C B A C+ C
Picks: Missing their 91-93
After taking Patrick Chewing with their 1st round selection, the Hawks made a conscious effort to surround him with defenders. While they lost some of their early picks, the Hawks should be contending until 1993 so no harm was done there. This team definitely looks to be a contender, as Ewing and that defense should get Atlanta at least 50 wins.
Grade: A-. Scoring might be a bit lacking, but Ewing+Lever should be enough for Atlanta.
Charlotte Bobcats
Roster:
573 Brad Daugherty C 25 7'0'' 245 A- C- C B B D
361 Dennis Rodman SF 29 6'7'' 210 C+ C- C+ A+ A+ B
290 Dominique Wilkins SF 30 6'7'' 200 A- B C B B- C
620 Mookie Blaylock PG 23 6'0'' 180 B- C B+ A C- B
Picks: No 91, 92, 99, 00, 07 picks
While the Bobcats sacrificed a lot with their draft picks, they might be the best team in the league on paper. Dominique Wilkins is a stud and Brad Daughtery will be a 20/10 center for a long time. Add in defensive standouts Dennis Rodman and Mookie Blaylock to the mix and the Bobcats are an exciting team. Depth, however, may plague them in their quest for a title.
Grade: A. The Bobcats have a great team that will be able to compete for a long time. It should be interesting to see if Rodman sims to those ratings at just 6’7 210.
Chicago Bulls
Roster:
475 Shawn Kemp PF 20 6'10'' 230 B+ C- C- B+ B A
387 Drazen Petrovic SG 26 6'5'' 195 C+ B+ C C+ C- B
329 John Starks SG 25 6'3'' 180 B- C+ C+ B- D+ B
Picks: All of their own
Kemp was a nice pick, as he will be one of the most exciting bigs to watch for the next decade. However, Play’s next two picks were pretty shocking. Petrovic looks like nothing, and he’s already 26. I’m as big of a John Starks fan as anyone, but he also doesn’t look like much either. You have to question those picks so early in the draft…it might set the Bulls back a few years.
Grade: C-. Kemp looks great, but Starks and Petrovic are questionable selections at best.
Cleveland Cavs:
Roster:
438 Moses Malone C 35 6'10'' 215 B C D+ A- A- D
223 Terry Cummings PF 6'9'' 220 29 B+ C C B C+ C
567 Xavier McDaniel SF 6'7'' 205 27 B+ C- C B- B- C
381 Terry Porter PG 27 6'3'' 195 C A- A- B+ D+ B
Picks: All of their own
Yuck. Ugly draft so far by the Cavs. Moses Malone went about 2 rounds too early and Terry Porter, while he looks good, certainly is not the answer in Cleveland. A very confusing draft so far by the Cavs, but they luckily have a good GM in Tiger who can turn it around. EDIT: Looks like they already have—Cummings and McDaniel were two nice later selections.
Grade: D+. The Cavs have no star and took a 35 year old with their 2nd round pick. Adding Cummings and McDaniels is a bit of a saving grace though.
Detroit Pistons:
Roster:
393 Gary Payton PG 22 6'4'' 180 C+ C B+ B+ C A
Picks: All of their own, ATL 91, 93
The Pistons are rebuilding pretty conventionally and there is no better player to build around than Gary Payton. The Glove should be a perfect fit for the Pistons for years to come despite the fact that he currently has no one to pass the ball to. Those Hawks picks shouldn’t be too good, but Andy has done a solid job so far.
Grade: B. Hard to tell this early but Payton is awesome.
Indiana Pacers:
459 Andrew Lang C 24 6'11'' 245 C+ C- D- A- B B
630 Charles Barkley SF 27 6'5'' 250 A- B C A- A- C
280 Michael Williams PG 24 6'2'' 175 B- C B+ B+ C- B
Picks: All of its own
Traves has been mocking people for trading their future, but he will learn quickly that a direction is generally needed in BBS. Right now, his team lacks one. Barkley is nice, but he has surrounded him with two young players that are nothing more than mediocre right now. While Lang and Williams have solid futures, neither will be anything more than a 4th or 5th starter.
Grade: C+. Barkley doesn’t have the supporting cast to win.
Milwaukee Bucks
Roster:
348 Rony Seikaly C 25 6'11'' 230 B D+ C- B A- C
439 Karl Malone PF 27 6'9'' 250 A C- C B+ B+ C
370 Pooh Richardson PG 24 6'1'' 180 B- C A- B- D+ B
Picks: All of its own
Jordan is in a very similar spot to Traves. Malone is awesome, but he doesn’t have Stockton to pass him the ball this time. If the Bucks want to compete, they will have to surround the Mailman with a better supporting cast, as Seikaly and Richardson are just role players at this point.
Grade: C+. Malone would have to put up all-world numbers if the Bucks had any contending hopes.
Toronto Raptors
357 Ralph Sampson C 30 7'4'' 228 B- D+ D A- B D
437 Danny Manning SF 24 6'10'' 230 B+ C- C A- C A
480 Magic Johnson PG 31 6'8'' 215 B+ B+ A B C+ C
Picks: All of its own
DJ made the biggest move of anyone so far in acquiring Magic Johnson for Larry Bird. While Bird might be better now, this saved his team 2 more years and gained him some much needed value. DJ snatched up Danny Manning in the 2nd round, which was probably a steal and added Ralph Sampson in the 3rd, a “meh” pick if you ask me. While it’s hard to see the Raptors direction, the Magic trade salvages their draft
Grade: B+, Magic acquisition and Manning pick were great moves.
Boston Celtics:
Roster:
330 Felton Spencer C 22 7'0'' 265 C+ C- D- B+ B B
441 Dan Majerle SG 25 6'6'' 215 B- B C+ A- C B
