I was thinking to myself earlier - if I could build a team from top to bottom with $48 million (without going over the salary cap) using players current contracts, excluding rookie deals, what would my ideal team look like?
C: Caldwell Jones C 29 6'11'' 217 B C C A+ B C
Contract: $9,752,800 $10,565,533 $11,378,266
Why?: For under $10 mil. per year, you get a guy who will give you 16/11/4 consistently and with his percentages improving last season, it's hard to find a lot of players who match his description for the price.
Jones is a top-5 shot blocker and has very few holes in his game. He's ideal to have as a starter.
PF: Bill Willoughby PF 22 6'8'' 205 A- C C A- C+ A
Contract: $4,518,462 $4,970,308 $5,422,154
Why?: Hardly needs explanation, but Willoughby's contract is absolutely absurd. At age 22, making such little money and being an elite shot blocker, Willoughby is who I'd want up front for this team.
The biggest issue now becomes rebounding. With Jones being a "B" and Willoughby being an "A-", I'm going to have to pick up some rebounding for my bench.
SF: Jim McMillian SF 31 6'5'' 215 B+ C D- A- C+ C
Contract: $5,060,000 $5,566,000
Why?: McMillian was amazing last season. On the team with the league's best record, McMillian averaged 19 ppg and 8.5 rpg with under 1 topg, shooting over 50% from the field.
He has been one of the league's most efficient players since his rookie year and in his career, averages 0.6 topg in 29+ mpg.
One of the most underrated players in the league by far.
SG: Allan Bristow SG 28 6'7'' 210 C+ A+ C B C+ C
Contract: $7,180,338 $7,778,700
Why?: I have solid defensive pieces, so now I'm picking up my stud scorer. Bristow is a good rebounder and a gunner from outside, so I'm picking up him on his budget contract.
Bristow provides me with the ammunition that I need to score points at a high percentage. He turns the ball over a bit more than I'd like, but I'm willing to put up with it because the rest of my starters do not.
PG: Walt Hazzard PG 37 6'2'' 191 C+ A B+ A- C- C
Contract: $4,500,000 $5,400,000
Why?: Incredible bang for my buck. Hazzard remained great last year and has one good season left in the tank.
I expect Hazzard will be a 20/9 player and he still has the ability to defend.
Such a bargain to get him at the MLE.
Starters' Combined Salaries $31,011,600
Bench:
Front Court:
George T. Johnson C 30 6'11'' 205 C+ D+ D- B+ B D
$965,850
If Johnson's good at one thing, it's shot blocking and he's the perfect backup center/power forward for that reason.
Billy Paultz PF 31 6'11'' 235 B- C- C- A- A- D
$1,762,835
Paultz is a solid backup. He gets blocks and rebounds and doesn't kill you offensively. He rarely turns the ball over and his percentages are serviceable.
Tom McMillen SF 27 6'11'' 215 A- C C- B B- C
$2,591,624
McMillen is Steve Mix Lite. He puts up big numbers on incredible percentages. During the playoffs last season, he was shooting in the 60% range for its entirety and was dominating off of the bench.
Could easily start at PF/SF/SG if any of my starters went down and the team wouldn't be hurt.
Ollie Johnson SF 30 6'6'' 200 B+ C+ C- A- C+ C
$930,000
Another unbelievably efficient player in the mold of McMillian. For some reason, he's rarely gotten minutes in BBS, but if he did, I imagine that he could put up about 15 ppg and 6 rpg with low TOs in about 27 mpg as a backup 1/2/3.
He's a guy who I'd love to have on my bench at this price.
Spencer Haywood SF 30 6'8'' 225 B+ C+ D B B+ C
$840,850
Spencer Haywood rounds out this team.
Like Sobers, Haywood has gone from being a bust to being a great budget player.
Back Court:
Larry Steele SG 30 6'5'' 180 B+ C C A+ C- C
$3,960,000 $4,356,000
If I didn't need scoring so badly, Steele would be starting at SG.
He's another incredibly underrated player who always manages to re-sign on these ungodly great contracts.
Always in the top-10 in steals and rarely turns over the ball. With him and McMillen off the bench, Ollie Johnson gets a bit lost in the mix.
Ricky Sobers PG 26 6'3'' 198 B A- B+ A- C- C
$5,000,000
Sobers has essentially gone from being a huge bust due to his expectations (not to mention a key part of a trade that landed Kareem Abdul-Jabbar) to a budget backup who can provide a spark off of the bench.
Sobers is the most expensive bench component, but could definitely jump into the starting lineup if Hazzard got injured and the team would continue to be pretty good.
At this price, he's actually got value again!
Kevin Porter PG 29 6'0'' 170 B C+ B+ A- D- C
$778,350
I can't say that Porter is an excellent player, but as a backup, he certainly won't hurt.
He's a good jump shooter, avoid taking too many careless 3s and gets steals.
