Note: If you did the right thing IMO, you got an A. So theoretically, everyone could get an A! Ds and Fs were reserved for true head scratchers.
2048 Post Draft Analysis
Boston Celtics
Picks:
1 - Magic Johnson SF 6'8'' 215 19 A- C A- C A- A
15 - Freeman Williams SG 6'4'' 190 22 B A- C- C D+ B
Grade: A+
Comments: Well, yeah, they didn't do the stupid thing and pick Bird despite DBW being from Boston and a Celtics fan, so kudos to him avoiding any temptation there. Hell of a birthday gift for DBW, Magic should be the best player BBS has seen outside of Bingo. Williams is also an awesome pick at 15, a guy who can step right in and be a big time scorer. The biggest concern is his rebounding, which is sure to be nicely covered up by Magic at PG.
Phoenix Suns
Picks:
2 - Larry Bird PF 6'9'' 220 21 B+ B+ B+ C B+ A
Grade: A+
Comments: The easiest pick in the draft, Bird goes to a team where he should fit in really well. Outlawz has a chance to build the ultimate outside shooting team with Sikma and Bird up front, and to say I'm jealous of him would be a massive understatement. Hopefully Lawz does a solid job of building around those two, provided Sikma improves in TC and becomes more than that Franz guy who used to play for the Jazz way back when.
Toronto Raptors
Picks:
3 - Mike Mitchell SF 6'7'' 215 22 A- C+ C- C+ C+ B
Grade: B-
Comments: This is a DJ pick if there ever was one. I really, really like Mitchell. I think it's pretty much a lock he becomes a quality starting SF. With that said, DJ went and took the safe road, and given his team's position, I think that's a mistake. He had an opportunity to swing for the fences and chose not to do so. It's the type of pick that he'll never really regret, but I think there's less than a 5% chance that Mitchell ends up the third best player in this class.
Orlando Magic
Picks:
4 - Purvis Short SF 6'7'' 210 21 B B C C C A
11 - Rick Robey C 6'11'' 230 22 B- C C- B B+ B
18 - Pat Cummings PF 6'9'' 230 22 B C D+ C+ B B
Grade: B+
Comments: Some will probably think Short is a bit of a reach at 4, an argument could certainly be made for Theus, Thompson, or Cheeks. From my perspective, Short has the best chance at being a star without any real flaws in that bunch, which to me makes him the guy with the highest potential value at the spot. Theus will probably be a stud, but the mediocre rebounding and ball handling is a pretty big turnoff, while Cheeks and Thompson look solid but unspectacular from my perspective. After that, Robey is a safe pick at 11, and Cummings looks like a guy who should be a quality scorer and rebounder at 18.
Detroit Pistons
Picks:
5 - Maurice Cheeks PG 6'1'' 180 22 B C B- A- C- A
26 - Jeff Cook C 6'10'' 215 22 B C C- B- C+ B
28 - Billy Ray Bates SG 6'4'' 210 22 B B D+ C D+ C
29 - Ron Brewer SG 6'4'' 180 23 C+ B+ C- C+ D+ B
Grade: B
Comments: All of this analysis is obviously subjective, because from a pure ratings standpoint Cheeks looks like a solid pick here. Despite that, Andy needs to be going upside here, and the buzz based on pre draft notes seemed to suggest Theus as a higher caliber prospect. Cheeks will be a quality starter for sure, but I'd be willing to bet quite a bit that Theus ends up the better player. Cook's a very solid pick late in the first round, pretty clearly the best rated player left on the board. Bates can apparently score, block, and steal a bit, so there's a lot to like there, even with the lack of rebounding. Potential steal of a pick. Their last pick, Ron Brewer, had the best ratings left so it's hard to argue there.
Washington Wizards
Picks:
6 - Reggie Theus SG 6'7'' 190 21 B- B B+ C C- A
Grade: A
Comments: The right pick, that's really the only way to put it. Thompson should be nice, but Theus has a real shot to be a #1 option type scorer. I expected Theus to go third (despite me skipping over him as well), so this is a pretty awesome value pick at 6. The Wizards couldn't have asked for a whole lot more.
New York Knicks
Picks:
7 - Mychal Thompson C 6'10'' 226 23 B C- D+ B- B- A
12 - Gerald Henderson PG 6'2'' 175 22 C+ B- B- A- C B
14 - Jerome Whitehead C 6'10'' 220 22 B+ C C- C+ C+ B
21 - Chubby Cox PG 6'2'' 180 22 C B- B- C+ D+ C
Grade: A-
Comments: Probably the easiest pick in the draft to make, Thompson was likely #3 on a lot of draft boards, so Skillz should be glad he was still around at 7. He mentioned in a PM that he intended on taking Cheeks at 7 if he was available, but I think he'll ultimately be happier with Thompson. I don't think he'll be a star, but he should be a quality starter, which tends to be harder to find at center than point guard. Henderson at 12 was a pretty easy selection too, who was expected by Aar to go a good bit earlier. He probably won't be a stud, but has a solid shot to be a starter. Whitehead at 14 gives Skillz another big who can score effectively inside, though there's a good chance he gets moved to SF and becomes a mini Steve Mix. Nicely done by Skillz there. The only real question mark is trading the Lakers 49 for a pick to select Chubby Cox. I was hoping Cox would slip to the 2nd, as Spencer had nice things to say about him it seemed, but this is definitely a bit of a reach. I'll give the benefit of the doubt to Skillz though.
Dallas Mavericks
Picks:
8 - Dave Corzine C 6'11'' 250 22 C+ C C- B+ C+ A
19 - Jeff Judkins SF 6'6'' 185 22 B- B- C- B+ C B
25 - Mike Evans PG 6'1'' 170 23 C+ B- C+ B D+ C
Grade: B+
Comments: I'm really not sure how I feel about the Corzine pick. On one hand Corzine will surely be a nice shot blocker, and he appears to have enough upside to be a quality starter, on the other hand I think Hardy ends up the better player, though it's certainly debatable. I don't know that I would have given Greg an A here no matter who he picked, because frankly it's a really tough decision, and I'm not sure there was a right answer. Judkins is a solid pick as well, hard to really argue with Greg there. Unlikely to be a star, but he should be a contributor, which in this draft after the lotto is all you can ask for. Mike Evans was a bit of a weak pick though, unless he has surprisingly high handles, definitely more talented players left on the board.
Miami Heat
Picks:
9 - John Long SG 6'5'' 195 22 C A- C B+ C- B
Grade: D+
Comments: Bleh. Long will be a nice role player, his notes suggest he'll be a quality defender and a knock down shooter. That obviously has value, but at this spot in the draft? You shouldn't be drafting a guy who projects to be a backup combo guard at 9. Hardy's the right pick here.
Golden State Warriors
10 - James Hardy PF 6'8'' 220 21 B C C- B+ C+ B
Grade: A
Comments: Hardy was clearly the right pick at 10, an argument could be made for Robey, but this should have been pretty easy for CC. Even if his rebounding doesn't develop enough for him to play PF successfully, he'll be a nice SF in an inside offense. Moving #21 for a future 1st was a solid move as well.
Houston Rockets
Picks:
13 - Clemon Johnson C 6'10'' 240 22 B- D+ C- A- C+ B
Grade: B+
Comments: Johnson will be a quality defender for sure, the question is whether ACs/RCs/TCs can save his awful offense or rebounding. If one of the two becomes servicable, he's a quality starter, and this was the right pick. But that's far from a sure thing. To me Whitehead has more star potential to him, and is probably my pick if I'm Jordan here, but it's hard to argue with taking a shot blocker in a league that loves shot blockers.
Los Angeles Lakers
Picks:
16 - Phil Ford PG 6'2'' 175 22 B- C B C+ D+ B
Grade: A
Comments: Ford's a nice pick here, the only real argument is whether he'll be a better PG than George Johnson or Pat Cummings will be as bigs. All in all Styro will be happy with his pick, and while he almost surely won't end up a star, he should be a solid contributor. Unfortunately at this point in the draft, that's all that's really left outside of a few potential steals.
Indiana Pacers
Picks:
17 - George Johnson PF 6'7'' 210 21 C+ C C- B+ B- B
23 - Marc Iavaroni SF 6'8'' 210 22 B- C C- A- B- B
Grade: A-
Comments: Johnson looks to be a nice defensive PF, and if his rebounding comes around he'll be a real asset. Based on his high steal rating, he might even be able to spot some minutes at SF as well. Quality pick here for Biggie, I expect Johnson to have some value around the league as a guy who defends, rebounds, and doesn't kill you on offense. Iavaroni is a decent pick as well, though there were still a few guys on the board like Cook who I'd have taken over Marc.
Philadelphia 76ers
Picks:
22 - John Douglas PG 6'2'' 170 22 C B+ B- C+ D+ C
Grade: D
Comments: Douglas can shoot, and that's nice, but he's a poor ball handler, doesn't defend, doesn't rebound, and doesn't have upside. There are a few guys here who still had a shot at being potential starters, and unless he's some sort of hidden stud, the 76ers missed out on some value here.
Los Angeles Clippers
Picks:
24 - Otis Howard PF 6'7'' 220 21 C D+ D+ B B+ C
Grade: B+
Comments: Howard is a nice defensive player and rebounder, pretty much all you can ask for at this point in the draft. If his FT shooting is salvagable, he'll be a quality third big. Still would have gone with a guy like Cook in this spot though.
Charlotte Bobcats
Picks:
27 - Jack Givens SF 6'5'' 205 22 C+ B+ C- B- C+ C
Grade: B+
Comments: Solid selection from John, Givens has a really nice skillset for a PF. Not a ton is known about his stats defense or whether he's turnover prone, but on the outside he looks like a solid role player at least. Still think there were a few other guys who should have gone ahead of him, but to each their own, and not sure picking him over taking the Bucks 2050 1st was a good choice, but oh well.
